This is a review for the daycare/preschool programs at SLOCA. Our experience has been phenomenal…read more My daughter started in Tiny Wonders during the pandemic and is finishing her first year in the preschool program right now. From start to finish, developmentally, she has flourished. We saw a noticeable change in her language as soon as she started, and since then, she has learned to share, use her words to talk about her feelings, work through conflict, put on/take off clothes, independently eat her lunch/snack, and more. She has developed friendships and relationships with the teachers. SLOCA is not only incredibly competent curriculum-wise, but they are amazing human beings. They are truly a family. When my dad died, I was greeted with hugs and tears and was told that I did not need to complete my volunteer hours that semester. My daughter's teachers even came to her third birthday party. All of the staff, teachers, and admin are warm and caring. And the children feel this! Huge shoutouts to Miss Alana, Miss Debbie, Miss Sutton, Mrs. Molly, and especially the program director, Mrs. Eades. Incredible incredible humans. I have so much love for SLOCA and am excited for my son to start there in the fall!

The school is very educational and fun. The small class sizes make it more interactive for the students and allow them to really connect with the subjects. What is great about the school is that you only go on campus 2 or 3 days a week! The other weekdays you spend doing homework at home! Highly recommended school! :)

Grizzly Academy changes lives! I have been a mentor twice…read more Students live there. They live & learn military style. They are in different platoons. After a while, approx, 2 months, cadets (students) get mentor visits and family visits. I truly cherished these visits. The enthusiasm and the wonderful stories of helping out n the community (community service) made me proud. I saw my cadet change. Change for the better. She is a better person, both academically and emotionally. She runs! She learned that at Grizzly. Give Grizzly a chance. It helps in so many ways.

I worked very hard getting everything together for the Grizzly Youth Academy. Doctor, dentist,…read morenotary, Ca Id, birth certificate and just all of the forms to fill out. Also my brother agreed to be his mentor, that application was pretty extensive. My son is smart, not a trouble maker, not a drug user, just extremely lazy. He failed 3 classes, all classes needed to graduate. I am a single mom and struggle to work with my son to do better in school. We drove down to San Luis Obispo on Saturday June 3rd. We took the tour. From everything they told us, this was a perfect place for a person like my son. We live in Santa Clara, this is a 3 hour drive each way. Just over a week ago, the girl from GYA office called and told me I needed his social security card. I told her that I could get it before the program started on July 15th. But I just couldn't get it done. She was very rude and told me to apply again for January. I was taken aback by this. I hung up. A few minutes later, the guy in charge called me back and said he "overheard his intern" and wanted to tell me that it would be fine to get the social security card later, because I had his Ca Id, the birth certificate and everything else. So, this past Sat (yesterday) they had a physical fitness test for the students. I called and emailed to find out what time it was. Again, the rude girl. she said he couldn't go to the physical fitness test unless he was accepted. The result of this phone call was that they wouldn't tell me until Friday! The day before the test. I called and emailed Friday afternoon. The rude girl called back and just said, "his application is denied". I asked why and she said, "we don't give a reason". Well, I will take this as a sign that GYA is not right for us. During the tour they never give the impression that the student will be denied. They appeared to be looking for students just like my son. To be denied with absolutely no reason, a little tough for this mom who is doing everything she can to raise this boy who just needs some structure and discipline. Maybe they could be a bit more up front before one starts the very extensive application. Being a charter school who depends on funding, maybe someone with a bit more understanding and compassion to be the person on the other end of the phone would help this mom not write a 1 star review.

I could tell right then that this more than a school, it was a community. My daughter is very new to the school and has attended one year of preschool and is currently enrolled in Kinder at St. Pats and she is already READING! She's only been in kinder a few months and I'm so impressed! I was nervous when we first enrolled my daughter about her being in the same class with the same kids for 9 years straight (k-8th grade)... Until I spoke with an 8th grade mom at one of the mixers. She said the bond that those kids have is like nothing else. They look out for each other and truly have each others backs. They start highschool with confidence and knowing who they are. There is a lot of parent participation opportunities which intimidated me a little. I'm a full time working mom with very little flexibility however attending the after hours mixers has allowed me to meet other parents who ARE available to work in the classrooms and attend the field trips etc. I constantly get texts with pics of my daughter and cute stories of what happened in class etc. It just goes back to the community of it all. Mass at school has literally brought me to tears. Seeing the confidence of the older kids doing readings in front of the whole school and parents/grandparents. Watching the priest interact with the children and call on them with questions. The kids are so eager to raise their hand and be called on. Its amazing, very interactive and inspiring. It truly just validates why I am so happy we chose to enroll her in this school and community.
