I struggled with this review. There are many positive things about this place and just as many negative things. So, let's start with what we liked about the place. The home was once a beautiful home. The entry way is impressive. We stayed in Unit 4 and it could comfortably accommodate a family or two couples. Even though there were other people staying in the home, we rarely saw or heard them. The grounds were once beautiful. The view is spectacular. Our television channel selection was good and the internet worked fine. The bed was surprisingly comfortable. Sounds pretty good, right? Well, the home is not being maintained. It needs painting on the outside, cracks filled, etc. The first day we were there, I opened the slider screen door and it fell off, bounced back and struck me in the forehead. It was rusted on the bottom. One of the beautiful doors in one of the bedrooms had the glass missing from the door and they had covered it with plastic it. So, the plastic constantly flapped when there was a slight breeze. Additionally, there are spaces in the plastic and the door jamb allowing for wasps to come in. We killed 8 very large wasps. This is a problem since I am allergic to wasps and I had forgotten my Epi-pen. We ended up closing the bedroom door and sealing the room to prevent the wasps from coming into the common areas. This was not disclosed to us prior to us arriving. There is mold along the edge of the bathroom and the floor. We had housekeeping services two of the seven days we stayed there. We walked down to the cliff's edge and ran into numerous spider webs, all containing spiders. The driveway is pretty but terribly impractical. There are large rock pavers with ground covering growing in between. This makes for a muddy mess when it rains and you are trying to drag your luggage through it. The spot light does not stay on long enough to be able to see you from the car to the front door. The nearest restaurant, etc is about 8 miles away. While this house has so much potential, we would not stay there again nor would we recommend it to anyone. read more

This place is beautiful and at such a good price. Previous reviews are ridiculous and rude, If you want a high end hotel then go pay for one! Yes there was no a/c and trust me I am an a/c kind of person, but the weather was nice and there were ceiling fans and at night the sound of the rain was soothing. The place does look like it's aged a little more then the pictures from years ago, but that's given with the rainy weather and being right by the beach. There are very few bugs I seen one, but your in Hawaii... what did you expect! My only complaint is I wish there were more pillows. But for $100 a night it came with a very large room, bathroom, and sectioned off dining area. Plus they don't tack on large surprise fees like hotels do. There is also a bbq area in the very large yard if you'd like to use. This place is a great deal and only about 15min drive from Hilo town and across the street from zip lining and botanical garden. It was very hard to find to find the property, there are no signs and after 3 attempts to locate property I called the owner of the property. I had to call him 3 times. Once I got to the location it looked like a private residence. I had to call the owner once more to confirm that this was the correct location. When I arrived at the property it was about 6 pm and all I wanted to do was go to my room and take a shower. I went up to my room and realized there was absolutely no air conditioning, just a cheap $15 floor fan and one small windows for air. I opened the balcony door to get more air in and that only let in the mosquitoes. My balcony door to the shared balcony left the next guest over the opportunity to gain entry into my room, that didn't feel safe. The tub in the bathroom didn't look clean. Also, you can hear every footstep, voice, conversation, door opening and closing in this house. I was kept up until 2 am by the guest in the next room. The next morning I was woken up at 5 am to the guests rustling. Second night was a little alarming, no owners on site, two men show up to the door that were guests. I will tell you, as a single female, I did not feel safe all alone with two male strangers with a door that is of poor construction and the fact that you must leave your window open for air circulation. Not much sleep due to worrying about my safety not due to guests being loud. Third night, Pleasant night, got some sleep as there were only one other guest. Fourth night, was by far the worst night in all my years as a traveller. Family of 16 (6 adults and 10 children) came and stayed in 3 of the suites. They were running up and down the stairs, yelling, screaming, carrying on loud conversations downstairs that you can hear through your window, doors slamming, and at one point the owner was talking to another guest that checked in at 10 pm for 30 minutes in the entry way. At 9:30 pm, I called the owner and asked for the noise to quiet down, he told me at 10 pm it would stop and that he would speak to them about the noise not past 10 pm. So, I waited, at 10:30 pm I made my second call to the owner, he did not answer his phone. I was up until midnight with all the loud noises, door slamming, and footsteps to and from one side of the hall to the other. The next morning, I was woken up again at 5 am to the loud guest party. So no sleep once again. Once ready to leave for the day, the second owner asked me how my night was and I informed him that it was not good at all and that the noise needs to be done by 10 p m tonight as I have a long day of traveling for tomorrow. Both owners assured me they would make sure that they speak with the other guests for tonight. Fifth night, loud noises again, obviously neither of the owners addressed the issue. I would not recommend this property to anyone that values their sleep, privacy, security, and looking for a luxurious hotel to stay at. The lack of A/C alone kills the charm of this property. The more guest they have the less hot water available, more than two guest at the property, there is no hot water for showering. There is no daily cleaning service, by the 3 rd day, I had to ask for new towel, toilet paper. Trash cans were never emptied the entire 5 days. When a guest left, cleaning of the room was not done until another guest was coming, sometimes days without the room being cleaned. All guests have access to the other rooms as the owners leave the doors open. No house rules, you wouldn't think about this in a hotel but at this property they need house rules for the noise levels and guest etiquette. Suggestions for the owner include: Be present at the property Ceiling fans House rules Daily housekeeping Pro: Balconies are large with patio furniture Kitchen privileges to cook Free parking Free wifi Common area with television Entry way is grand and you will want to take pictures of it Owners are nice, too nice (see above for explanation) Owners do not ask for Identification nor a credit card for incidentals Sunrises are not to be missed Con: No A/C You must take off your shoes upon entering the home No daily house cleaning Bathroom tubs are not clean (have a foot fungus because of it now) You can hear every voice, door and footstep in this home when you are in your room Don't expect to get any sleep as management will not tell other guests to quiet down. I've never stayed at a "vacation rental," but I have stayed at my grandparent's house before, which is pretty much what this place is like. Yes, it's a beautiful structure, the grand staircase is pretty cool, and the view of the ocean from the backyard is awesome, but everything else about this property is weird, cheap, and downright creepy. My husband and I stayed here for the last 2 nights of our honeymoon, which was a mistake as this property is definitely not for honeymooners since there is minimal privacy and zero luxury. The owners are nice, pleasant people, but that is to be expected. I thought their request to remove your shoes upon entering was charming at first. Then it just became annoying. True, there is no AC, and true, you don't neeeed it, but you do need to keep your windows open to keep your room cool, which means you'll almost always hear your neighbors' conversations and activities, and they yours. Again, not an ideal situation for honeymooners or any other type of traveler seeking privacy. Oh, and the bugs. Be prepared to wake up numerous times to kill all the bugs that will fly in your room through the open windows. Based on the exterior of the house and the impressive staircase, I expected our room to be equally impressive. This was not the case. We opened our cheap chipboard door to find gross brown carpeting and three pieces of mismatched furniture that seemed a mix of recycled Ikea pieces and an oddly high hand-me-down bed with flat pillows and dingy sheets. Again, not good for honeymooners. The bathroom, though, was pretty ok and clean, possibly the only hotel-like element of this property, though the towels felt like sandpaper. Would I stay here again? This place is horrible. I left my review and cockroach pictures a few weeks ago and the owner or who ever updates this yelp account took down my review and pictures. Do not book at this place if you want to have a nice and relaxing stay. We came here late August and was given text message instructions about how to get into the property. Within the first five minutes of entering the room and pulling the window covers a flying cockroach flies into our faces. We try to kill it but it is flying all over the place. We cannot ask for help to kill the cockroach because there is no hotel representative on site. We would have gotten another room but no one was there to help us get a new room. We end up leaving because of the nasty cockroach landing on the table in the room and flying all over the place. in our text message conversation Jade stated that the cleaning crew had just cleaned our room so I was really confused with them not seeing the cockroach! When I ask for a portion of my money back I end up with nasty emails from the owner. They say they will give me a credit for the room for our next stay but to be honest I would never stay there because of their poor customer service, and how they have dealt with the situation. Found this place in Expedia and it seemed to fit everything that we had wanted (3 people, 2 bedroom, a living room area, kitchenette, etc). The pictures looked beautiful so we booked it since it had said that vacancies during the dates of our trip were running low. Oh, how I should have looked at yelp first. Shame on me. After booking this place (a month a half before our trip), something came up where my friends were thinking about changing the dates for our vacation by a day. A friend tried calling and e-mailing, asking if there would be a fee since the website says that theres a fee for cancelling 30 days prior to the reservation date. Nobody picked up, but he left a message...and didnt hear back from anybody until a few days later, even after multiple phone call attempts. The day that it made 30 days till our trip. OF COURSE. Seemed really shady -___- At this point, it would have been almost $200 to cancel our reservation, so we just kept it and went. My friends had arrived a day before I did, and didnt get in until late at night due to flight problems. They had printed out the map to the place, but as other yelpers had written, it was hard to find; and unfortunately, their GPSes werent working since there wasnt much signal -_- But they somehow found it and were able to get in touch with the owners to check in. The property is beautiful; right on the ocean front with gorgeous landscaping. The exterior was really pretty as well. Our rental was huge; we had two rooms, one of which had its own living room area with two couches and a two love seats, its own bathroom and walk in closet, a balcony AND still left more than enough room for another bed. The kitchen had a microwave and small refrigerator and a large L shaped couch with TV. The Good: -Beautiful landscape/property. Be sure to go out and explore the mansion a bit. The staircase is gorgeous. I wish I had had more time to look around -Large condo; LOTS of space! We could have easily fit 8 people. And with the price divided up by 8 people? Not bad. With two rooms, two bathrooms, two balconies, 3 couches, two love seats? Pretty good deal. -The beds. SO COMFY. -Easy check out. Just leave the keys in the place on the table. No need to fuss with waiting in line or dealing with people. -Privacy: it was nice to have a little place of our own; we had our own entry way to go in and out, our own parking stall, yadda yadda. The Downers: -No AC. We didnt realize that there wasnt any AC until about a day before. We didnt mind it much since it was pretty cool and there were a few fans available to us. Luckily, we didnt have any holes in any of our screens as other yelpers had, so we didnt worry too much about bugs (we inspected each screen hehe) -However, we DID find bugs everywhere else (in the garage, in the balcony, etc). Spiders and their webs were everywhere! -Shady owners. I dont know if Id ever book with this place again, just based off of the owners. Just little fans. Air dried towels = super scratchy ouch Flat pillows The kind of flat like the pillow you used for 20 years as a kid. Should be negative 5. Called them two days before our arrival to let them know we'd arrive after their check in time of 6. We drove half an hour or more out of hilo to get there arriving just before 9 PM, no one would open the door, answer the doorbell, they'd not left any note for us. We called both numbers on the front door, no answer at either of them. Its been over a week, they still haven't called even to ask 'why are you calling us'. Eventually we had to turn around, drive all the way back to hilo and find a hotel in the middle of the night in a town none of us had ever been to. After reading the other reviews, i'm glad now we didn't stay there and MasterCard will be refunding my money since they refuse to return my calls. I don't know if this is some sort of drug front or what, but clearly they have no interest in running any sort of hotel. read more

We spent our last 2 days here before heading over to the Kona side of the island and we had just a wonderful time. It's located a bit away from Hilo and we didn't rent a car during our first night. We got there by taxi the first night but it was a bit expensive so we decided to rent a car for the second night. Closest restaurants are in Hilo which is about 13 miles away so if you plan to stay here, I would just make sure you rent a vehicle. read more

Had to have sheets changed immediately due to hair and other things on the sheets. Top bed spread also appears dirty. Room is overall dirty, not dusted and mirrored closet doors are dirty. Coffee maker dirty and was obviously not cleaned from the prior user. Had to clean in the bathroom and was very dirty. Bath towels are like using sand paper. No where does there advertising state that the TV continually goes off due to the satellite dish. No Air Conditioning. A;so the kitchen they show in their pictures, the owner stated we could not use. We stayed 3 nights at Ocean Legacy. It was far and away the worst of the 3 places we stayed on Hawaii in March 2015. The ocean side of the property is open and pretty and very well groomed although none of the fountains were working and looked like they had not been used in a long time. We rented the penthouse suite.The place was clean and neat but incredibly sparse. The kitchenette had hardly any cooking utensils. We went to use the BBQ and the grill handle literally came off in my hand as it was rusted through. There was no attention to detail in this place. While it looks beautiful from a distance, when you get up close, everything seems to be low quality and cheap. The place had no ambience. It had little to no decorations, and certainly no homey touches. It was much more sterile than inviting. The wireless network was all but useless on all of our devices. The signal was so intermittent it was frustrating. The penthouse balcony views of the ocean were all blocked by palm trees. For the price you could get a better value just about anywhere else. This place is horrible. The place does not have ocean access their ad is misleading They have NO CUSTOMER SERVICE no one is on the premises. The place is dirty and not well kept. Bugs everywhere, which is understandable in the tropics, but cockroaches in the coffee maker is not acceptable and on further inspection of the communal kitchen there was an infestation of them. In the room we had termites flying everywhere, the towels were not replaced and the pillows we asked for, because they only had two very thin pillows when we arrived, were dirty and smelled. Left after one night disgusted but we didn't let this shit hole ruin our vacation. Jade was not helpful and did not call me when I was trying to have him help me with this situation. I had Travelocity talk to him and he refused to refund me my money. At the beginning Jade is accessible but after you are trapped in this place he is no longer... He will reply to all the reviews and make a mock of unsatisfied guests. Way to go Jade best of luck screwing people's vacations read more

The worst place I have ever visited. First we were asked to check in ourselves, while the host was away. That was fine. Then our room didn't have air conditioning...in Hawaii! The front door didn't close a d we had to remove the net and replace it with the actual door. The place felt abandoned and creepy, like something out of a scary movie. Then the bugs attacked. I got bitten so many times, I couldn't be on the bed. Spiders, ants, and some tropical bugs. Shook out the couch to see if it was safe, giant dead bugs fell out, more live ones must still be in there. Called a hotel, paid a lot of money, drove more than an hour in the dark streets at night...but succesfully escaped and didn't spend the actual night at the oceanfront legacy. They also don't offer refunds, but I'm happy I got out of there nonetheless. read more

To be honest I don't think it was as bad as people are suggesting. First with the pros : Beautiful view to wake up to Owners were very very nice Clean room and spacious Close to Akaka Falls and a little town with cafe, and bakery The price was good for what we got Easy to park Cons: The house is filled with marble tile, so the noise bounces all over the place. You can indeed hear just about everyone and everything. Our neighbors were noisy ( we shared the balcony with them ), and because you have to keep your windows open, you do hear everything. Luckily they left after 2 days and then it got quiet. not a good place for kids, because of the noise that can be created. As far as bugs, yes we had a rip in our screen, but it was remedied by closing the door. The window was plenty of air to keep the room cool. You're in Hawaii, you're going to sweat a little...get over it. It was hard to find, took us a few times...but once we found it, then we knew what land marks to look for as we approached, such as mile marker 16 and botanical gardens, etc....and then it was fine I wish we could have used the kitchen because yes it is 11 miles from Hilo, and there were a few nights where we had torrential down pours so I would have preferred to not have to drive on the 2 lane road in the dark to get there and back. Other then that we had a pleasant stay. No place is perfect and like I said the place was clean and the owners very nice. It is in the boonies, so if you want to be closer to town I would not recommend. I would however stay here again if we could use the main kitchen. read more
