Ahem! Now that I have got that out of my system! Visiting the city of Cleveland never crossed my mind this year until I saw a promotion for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Half Marathon on my Facebook feed. After researching the event, its location, and the registration prices, I was sold. It turned out to be the perfect reason to visit the city the best way I know how--by running! Some notable Cleveland foods that I wanted to try included Lake Erie perch and walleye, pierogies, paczki, cassata cake, and buckeyes (the candy, not the team). Researching activities outside of the run itself--like the city's history, the Great Lakes Science Center, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the USS Cod Submarine Memorial, and, of course, the iconic A Christmas Story House--made me highly anticipate the visit. As for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Half Marathon, it began as a way to combine Cleveland's rich music heritage with a major running event. Giving runners a scenic loop around the city, passing landmarks. The run elevation for this half marathon event was downhill, but of course, there were some climbs--nothing wild, though! The highlights encountered for me were starting downtown near the Great Lakes Science Center, Huntington Bank Field, the Cleveland State University campus, the lovely cultural gardens along Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Lake Erie, and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Museum--which reminded me that the finish line was just ahead. Prior to my visit, I bookmarked several restaurants to try some of the foods of interest to me, which were The Lakehouse, Butcher and the Brewer, and Mitchell's Homemade Ice Cream. However, the restaurants I ended up visiting during my three days visiting were Mr. Hero, Zanzibar Soul Fusion, REBOL, and Jake's Pizza which were notable restaurants within the city. Next visit, I would love to visit either Winking Lizard Tavern, Mabel's BBQ, 7 Cravings, or Mitchell's Homemade Ice Cream which were popular ones I discovered or did not get to visit. Notable sights that I would love to visit or revisit in Cleveland in the future include the Great Lakes Science Center, the USS Cod Submarine Memorial, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, A Christmas Story House, and the Superman House. Finding out that Cleveland is the birthplace of Superman completely blew my mind. High school friends Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster dreamed up and illustrated the iconic superhero in 1933 while living in Cleveland's Glenville neighborhood. Learning this piece of history--which I hadn't fully known before--was a major highlight of my visit, right next to watching the Cleveland Browns versus Buffalo Bills game. I am very open to visiting Cleveland again. The city grew on me within the three days I visited, and there are some sights I did not get the chance to see yet. It's in the Far East part of Cleveland and there's some amazing food out here. It's not the safest neighbourhood, especially at night, but it's hipstery and well-manicured and exciting and nice, and it's definitely one of the heartbeats of the city, much like Ohio City which is more close to Center, and the West Side Market. It's an amazing City, and an underrated one. And neighbourhoods like this are one of the reasons why. So try a gyro from Best Gyros, and perhaps try a legendary Godfather Sandwich from Melt, and definitely try a milkshake or better yet, a malt, from Tommy's as well. NE Ohio is a whole world unto itself, it's a region, a destination, a little country that has little in common with the rest of Ohio. It's not nearly as Midwestern as other parts. My favourite thing is that the food here is phenomenal. While Pitt is a more gorgeous city (than almost any other), and has some food gems, Cleveland has more "must try" spots than Pitt, Columbus, Cinci, Detroit and Toledo put together. Bold claim, I know, but there are just so many things in Cleveland that you need to, need to, need to eat. And yes I'm going to tell you what they are. And if you prefer a more spicy kind of city, then I suggest going to Cloveland instead. They have some amazing options - very few of them healthy - but all of them delicious, and some among the very best in the country. We took advantage of the annual walk on the lower level of the Veterans Memorial Bridge. We did…read morehave to park and walk a little way because the area was so busy. The walk is free and you have to sign a waiver before entering. They made it very easy with staff waiting to help you near the entrance. Dogs are allowed in the walk. They positioned bands at each end of the bridge and one in the middle. There was also a medical station in the event of an emergency. The experience was unique to me. Views of the river were somewhat obstructed by much of the bridge. The walk was down the middle portion so there was no getting close to the edge. This was clearly for safety reasons. I am happy we were able to walk the bridge this year.

ANNUAL TOUR -- I and plenty of residents and visitors got lucky to see what lies beneath the bridge for the annual self-guided bridge tour and lights show (see my attached photos). This free event was part of a series of events around Cleveland that honours the 50th anniversary of the Cuyahoga River catching on fire. On Saturday, 22 June 2019, the Cuyahoga County's Public Works Department department hosted a tour of the Veteran's Memorial Bridge and Subway station. The bridge tour was awesome. The lower deck (dark, abandoned tunnel), is the part of the bridge I got to tour and that's the part that was open for viewing. According to an online source, this part of the bridge has not been used since 1954 when streetcars were discontinued and it is rarely shown to the public. LIGHTS SHOW -- It was amazing!!! I arrived around 9:30pm. There was one section of the bridge where lights moved around in a pattern on the floor and another section where there were string lights hung up. All the lights had different colours. The whole lights display was fantastic and there was music playing too (see my attached photos). The organization of the event was great and police officers were around to keep everyone safe. I read the details online and signed my waiver beforehand. So when I arrived, I didn't have to wait to sign a waiver. Also, there really was no line to enter the bridge. I had about 2 people in front of me when I arrived. Once I got inside the bridge, it was crowded but not horribly so because people came in and out. I really enjoyed this unique opportunity to view the inside of the bridge (below the car level). My favourite part besides the lights show was seeing the old streetcars that were stationed inside; they looked like subway trains. I also loved the downtown Cleveland view of the Flats neighbourhood from the bridge especially the sunset. I recommend the bridge tour to anyone visiting Cleveland during the summer and also to Cleveland residents. I hope the citizens of Cleveland appreciate the engineering, art and history behind this beautiful bridge as much as I do. I've driven over this bridge many times, I've walked over this bridge, and I've even viewed this bridge from a distance on many occasions. Inspired by it's beauty, I've also done a little research on its history. A bond to finance Hope Memorial Bridge was passed in 1921, and construction was completed in 1932. It is a 4,490 foot long truss bridge crossing over the Cuyahoga River, in the heart of Cleveland, beautifully decorated in art-deco style. The bridge is adorned by "Guardians of Traffic" that are sculpted onto opposite-facing ends of two pairs of pylons, with a pair at each end of the viaduct. Each of the Guardians holds a different type of vehicle in his hands. If a traveler is going northeast along this bridge, the bridge allows for a breathtaking approach to Progressive Field, home of the Cleveland Guardians Major League Baseball (MLB) team. In 2021, the name for Cleveland's MLB team was chosen to be the Cleveland Guardians, which was inspired by the Guardians on this beautiful bridge. But words can only say so much. The Hope Memorial Bridge (formerly Lorain Carnegie Bridge) is an east west bridge on the Cuyahoga…read moreRiver in Cleveland. It was renamed after Harry Hope, a stonemason who worked on the statues (and Bob Hope's dad). I wanted to see the bridge because of its iconic figures, The Guardians of Transportation, who are sentries at each end of the bridge. There are a total of eight winged Art Deco statues, each holding a different vehicle. I like the idea of these protectors keeping watch over the bridge and keeping drivers safe.

Walking distance in the Downtown Cleveland area, it is near the Browns stadium and the Museum of Rock. I wouldn't go out of my way for it but if you happen to be nearby you might as well check it out. Also some street parking available. There is a lot of debate about the artist's intention behind the free stamp, but the official reason is that the Free is a nodd to freedom from slavery and the soldier that fought in Civil War. Prior to looking up the explained meaning behind the sculpture, I didn't see the point of this "artwork". I don't think anything in life is truly free. There is always a cost whether it's monetary or not. I don't see anything that would make me here for over a quick minute. There isn't any interaction for photos I care to do with the sculpture.

He was rude and damaging to every patron who approached the desk with questions. I wanted to share part of Cleveland's history with my young adult children. We bought our tickets online and decided not to view the observation deck because of the interaction with the lazy, sarcastic, and rude security guard. What a poor representation of the city.

I happened to be here on Memorial Day, and I wanted to pay my respects, so I headed here as it was a quick walk from my hotel. I went to the monument and saw signs that said it was open. Open? I then realized that there was a room at the base of the main statue, and I went to the door and walked in- I was not prepared for what I saw. While small, the amount of detail in the memorial was incredible. There are nearly 9,000 names of those who fought and supported the fight, to preserve the Union from Cuyahoga County inscribed on the walls. There are also several life-size relief panels depicting various events and moments during the Civil War. I highly suggest a visit to this monument, as it is incredible.
