Interesting short walk with lots to look at. Graves, pottery shards, stone foundations and walls. Easy walk.

I imagined the people who walked this jetty every single day and I was jealous. We didn't tour the lighthouse but we've seen plenty of lighthouses. We've never seen one out a mile though. Don't miss this gem! Be sure to use the bathroom before coming here as we did not see any portapods. Also, wear shoes with hood support. We saw a few wearing flip flops; so t know how they did it. I wouldn't take the risk of tripping.

The ending to a perfect day in Maine? Watching the sunset from a jetty of course!…read more After spending the day exploring coastal areas in southern Maine, we decided to walk the jetty near Wells Harbor/York Beach. We didn't know what to expect when we discovered this spot - so when you come know that there are two jetty's. One you can access from the elongated, sandy parking area on Foster Ln (which was free to use and deserted when we came in early November); and, one you can access from a bigger, concrete parking area at the end of Atlantic Ave (beyond Sage Fishing Charters - it's pay to park here, but I don't know if that's just during the height of the summer season). These jetty's are long (I read somewhere that they're over a mile) stone breakwaters that stretch out relatively far from land into the Atlantic. It's beautiful to walk down and back as you get stunning views of Wells Harbor, the beach on either side, and great for bird watching too (we were captivated by some sanderlings!). It's important to be mindful when walking on jetty's though - these big boulders have crevices between them, so "mind the gap"; if the ocean is rough, you might also get soaked from waves crashing against them! Absolutely worth seeing, especially in the shoulder season when it's got that much more serene, humble feeling to it!

It was very hot the day and you are forced immediately off the trolley to sit in a glassed in pouch that was 112 degrees for 20 minutes, which sets the tone of the experience in a negative way. You view the mansion hot and sweaty, which stinks (Pun intended). Even if it wasn't hot, people should have the option to skip the video. 2. The trolly is supposed to cycle every 15 minutes (trolly even said it on the way up). We waited over 30 minutes. 3. Some guests were chastised for things that could have been easily avoided by putting up signs. If you don't want people doing things which seem perfectly acceptable to do, put a sing up or put it at the end of your 20 minute video. I think the guests who were talked down too felt embarrased and it was unnecessary. 4. When you drive up to the attraction, there is parking, by the cafe. We parked, got out, and had to go up to some people working in the park to find that we had to continue driving up the mountain to get to the carriage house. Are signs that expensive? "Keep driving to see Castle In The Clouds" or "This way to see Castle in the Clouds".

So total hike was only 1 mile. it is a WALK, not hike. Good for families with young ones. Be very aware that the mosquitoes here are super HUNGRY! I have never gotten so many bites within such a short time inside a hike! I got 6-7 bites all over my legs just from hiking here for 30 mins. My husband got 8+ bites all over his body! Luckily my little one only got 1 bite. We were all over Maine in the last 2 weeks including kayaking and out at Acadia national park. All outdoor activities and barely got any bites until now! There are other trails here too but after getting so many bites, we wanted to run away as fast as we could! I wish I didn't come here. View and waterfall are not worth it for trade off of these hungry hungry mosquitoes!! *sooo itchy* :-/ Bring bug spray if you wanna come!

Did you know that Portland Trails started in 1991? He donated the land around the falls and the rest of the land the trail walls through is a mix of public and private land. You see evidence of this with many marked signs that designate private property -- good to respect these so we can continue to walk these trails. Somehow I got lost off my usual path I take and ended up going on the greater fore river sanctuary trail loop around and across the railroad tracks, but the boardwalks were great! Back to the falls, if you start at the trailhead near Brighton ave, it's less than 0.25 miles of a walk. The falls are made of horsetails of rushing water over large slabs of rock. The trails are really well maintained and there's not too many people. You can definitely still hear traffic from some parts but there are a few quiet enclaves.

It has a very unique starting point - next to an abandoned weapons storage facility for an old military base!! But once you get past this, you find yourself wandering through lovely, peaceful New Hampshire woodland with a huge meadow along the way to the Great Bay viewing area! The trail is very well maintained but can definitely get muddy. We had storms the night before my hike and there were some very muddy spots that got a tad slippery - even with my excellent hiking shoes - but there were enough fallen leaves on the ground to provide plenty of pathways to avoid the super muddy and wet areas. And while this trail is wide and well maintained, it's not paved and I wouldn't consider it handicap accessible- although it might be doable if you have some pretty serious trail tires on a wheelchair! Because the trail is mostly flat and not rocky at all. One thing I really enjoyed on this trail were all the adorable American Red Squirrels, the Black Capped Chickadees, and all the fall colors - even in November! The forest was also just full of these absolutely beautiful, ghostly white and pink trees too that were very dramatic! I have no idea what they are, but they are just gorgeous!! I actually came here in search of Wild Turkeys but had no luck this day. It's a very peaceful trail - it was a weekday and I pretty much had it to myself - I only saw two other hikers pass by. The trail maps say it's 2 miles but I ended up with 2.5 miles on my AllTrails tracker for this trail. There's very minimal elevation gain. The halfway point on this loop takes you to a viewing platform of Great Bay with those binoculars on a stand that let you see across the water! There's benches there to rest, as well as benches spaced out along the trail too - just lovely! Another thing that makes this trail fun is that is has "numbered stops" along the way - and the FWS has an info pdf you can view on their website that gives you history and cool info about each stop. The guide to these numbered stops can be found here: https://www.fws.gov/uploadedFiles/Furber_Trail_Guide_FINAL_Aug2014(1).pdf The smaller trail is called the Peverly Pond Trail and is about 1/2 mile long with the trailhead right off the parking lot- but I didn't do this one so can't speak to it. There's plenty of parking in a paved lot and there are decent bathrooms at the parking lot as well - very clean and well stocked! No pets are allowed on these trails - but they do provide an extensive list of pet friendly trails nearby at the information kiosk in the parking lot.

We would all be crammed into this cottage, spending time together and going on adventures like hiking Mt Chocorua, going out on the canoe on the lake, or just swimming here. I remember countless hours fishing with my dad, I think I can count on one hand how many times I actually caught anything. Or we would just lounge on the porch, or be inside reading. Maybe we would watch the news in the morning, or watch a VHS tape of a kids movie at night (no cable here, this is roughing it!) with everyone in the living room and kitchen. I remember times spent with my grandparents here. Grandma passed away several years ago, and June of this year (2020) Grandpa passed away. There was a flood of memories coming back, it was a couple of years since my last visit. I am glad I was finally able to bring my wife here to see both the cottage and the lake. We went out on the canoe but had to come back because of thunder rolling in. It was her first time in a canoe, 30 seconds in she capsized and fell in the water. I'm glad I wasn't already in the damn thing . With Pine River Pond being 5 miles long, there is so much to explore; the islands, sand bars, tributaries, coves, there is no shortage of things to explore. The weekend was my birthday, and it was nice staying with my family there. This is a beautiful lake. I can't speak for the fishing but if you have a boat there is plenty to explore.
