Located in Centre County, PA (which apparently has over 130 caves!), this unique tour takes you through a beautiful limestone cavern entirely by boat. The cave tour lasts about 45 minutes and costs $25 per person. They also offer a wildlife tour by bus, but we only had time for the cave portion. Be aware there's a fairly large staircase you'll need to go down to reach the cave entrance. Something to keep in mind if anyone in your group has mobility issues. Each boat holds around 22 people, but we visited on a quiet Monday afternoon and only had 8 in our group, which made it feel more personal. Our tour guide was excellent and knowledgeable, engaging, and had a sense of humor. He encouraged questions and had thoughtful answers for everything we threw at him. At the end of the cave, you actually exit into a small lake, take a brief spin around, and then head back through the cave to where you started, very cool and peaceful. There's also a gift shop on-site that sells snacks, drinks, and the usual souvenirs. Tours typically depart every 30 to 60 minutes depending on how busy they are, so timing is pretty flexible. All in all, it's a fun, unique experience that's well worth the stop!

A very unique and curious phenomenon. We came Labor Day weekend and just about all of the ice had…read moredissipated, but they allowed us in to see and explain several theories they have for why and how this ecological mystery occurs. Some environmental experts have even visited her to try and discover why ice forms in this cave and only during the warmer weather. Still no one can quite explain exactly why ice forms sometimes several feet out of the cave. This oddity of nature struck my interest when we were planning a Sunday drive upstate and even though I knew the ice was melting I still had to visit. As a cave and cavern junkie I hoped that despite the ice being almost gone we would at least still have a tour of the actual cave. However that is not an option. The "tour" is really only admission to a room that houses the top opening of the cave allowing you to view down inside to where the ice grows up and rises out. Nonetheless I am glad I had the opportunity to see it and may travel back in early spring to see it in her full glory. The mine is closed now (early September) and will reopen seasonally in spring.

We went on a Saturday..got there around 3pm and left at 5pm. We barely ran into anyone while exploring..which was great. 2hrs was obviously not enough time. When we got there we checked in at the table..you get a wristband while on the property. Purchasing your tickets ahead of time..it makes life for the employees a lot easier. It's dark and there isn't power..so using the iPad to check out is a pain for them. They give you the rules and what not to do..where to stay out of..and they let you explore all on your own. We literally had so much fun. Make sure to bring plenty of flashlights and warm clothes if you're going during that winter season like we did. There are tunles that run from building to building..awesome! The chapel is incredible, the cell housing areas are just as cool..just so many things..the prison barber school..the cobbler shop. So many nooks and crannies. We learned theyll have overnight explorations in the spring/summer/fall in 2023. There will be a hydroponics building as well. The place is just spectacular, and the drive to keep this place open for people to come see history and not let it wither away is amazing. Thank you! Truly appreciate places like this. Please don't leave trash and break things here and ruin it for people who have an appreciation for places like this.

Anyway, It looked somewhat run down around the edges and only got to peek in the door. The admission was $10. a person. So I was somewhat relieved NOT to have to shell out that much, though I would have to see ole' Columbus' stuff. We determined the very puzzling "Columbus" connection. It appears that one of the early Boals, Col. Theodore Davis Boal, married Mathilde de Lagarde who was a direct descendant of Columbus and when she inherited some of Columbus' artifacts she had them shipped to the US from Spain. She is truly dedicated to finding someone who will take over when she is no longer with us, and deem her house a public museum once and for all. You need to call ahead for appointments. Her tours are either one hour, or two hours long. And believe me I thought one hour would be plenty...In reality I could have spent the whole day. It's all based on donations, but no less then $10 per person for the hour tour, $15 per person for two hour tour. However, in the end you will want to give her so much more, including a hug if it weren't for Covid times. Please wear a mask the whole time. I'm giving this company two stars, because I got to my destination in one piece, at least…read morephysically. Mentally and emotionally I have to brace for this horrific trip every time I need to come home to Pennsylvania from NYC. There are no trains near my hometown and no other buses--ONLY this one. It takes about 3 and a half hours to drive straight to my hometown but nearly 7 every time I take this bus, when it should be five. Here's what you can guarantee you'll experience on this bus: -Driver suddenly pulls over somewhere completely random during the trip, says nothing and has us wait about a half hour at LEAST before another driver comes. No explanation. -at the bus transfer in Lehighton, we wait another 30 minutes for the transfer bus to arrive. -At least one person forgets what their stop was and makes the driver turn around, we sit at a stop waiting for one person to arrive to the bus, and we park at Hazelton for at least 15 minutes for no reason even though the schedule says it leaves immediately. This doesn't include the handful of bus breakdowns I've experienced, uncomfortable seats, lack of outlets and often, lack of air conditioning or heat. Oh, and it's $140 round trip. To take a bus. Back to Pennsylvania. I have endured this trip for years because I've had to. The MINUTE I am making enough money to justify getting a rental car, I will take that option every time and never look back. An entire day is shot just trying to get not even four hours away. By the end of every trip, I'm practically crawling off the bus isn't he worst mood I've ever been in. Nothing can save you on this trip except maybe a double dose of CBD.

The Northumberland County Historical Society is located in the Hunter House, on the former site of Fort Augusta. Fort Augusta itself was a stronghold in the French & Indian War up to the American Revolution. Although it was built by the British, it was used by the American Forces in the Revolution yet ironically it was named for King George III's mother. Because of its strength and position, it was never under seige. But anyway, back to the museum! It was named for Colonel Samuel Hunter, commander of the fort, and built by his grandson, Captain Samuel Hunter. The museum has a large collection of artifacts from the French & Indian War and the Revolutionary War. But what I found most interesting were the artifacts from local history. These are the things you won't see in large museums. Speaking of local history, the Society also has quite a large genealogical library where you can look up histories of early county families. All in all, it's a fascinating place to visit and it should be on your "must see" list if you're in the area.

If you enjoy the Victorian style-themed era, this house will be enjoyable to tour. For locals, it will give you a glimpse back into that time in Berwick which is neat to hear about our local history. Check out their website for special events such as Christmas time. I hear it is beautifully decorated at Christmas time.
