    Trailhead

If you're going to see Old Faithful I would recommend watching it two ways: at the viewing area right in front, and also from the observation point. It's only a 0.5 mile hike from the base and you'll be able to see an overview of the entire eruption. When you walk to the east of Old Faithful you'll see a path that leads you to a sign at the trailhead. You'll know that you've arrived when you see a group of people sitting around, and the top has some tree branches used as a structure that you can sit in between while waiting. Because the eruptions occur every ~90 minutes I would recommend watching it from the base, then spending the next ~60 minutes walking around the upper geyser basin and other attractions in the area, then beginning your hike to the viewing area to see the next eruption from up top to see it from different angles.

If you are coming to Yellowstone you have to make sure to come see Old Faithful. There are benches around the area on a deck where people can sit and wait for it to erupt. There are screens in the general store where they tell you when they anticipate the next eruption. They say give or take 15 minutes. You can take a comfortable walk back around Old Faithful to the backside. It is an easy walk. We are glad we got to see this. Beautiful.

A trip to Yellowstone National Park would not be complete without a visit to iconic, Old Faithful Geyser! To stand in the very places where generations stood many years before us...gawking...just like we do today...at the grandeur and magnitude of this faithful cone geyser - erupting every 44min-2hrs day after day, year after year - surviving us and our grandparents and our grandparents' grandparents - beguiling each audience with its tailored, unique performances! Yellowstone is the first National Park in the US - most notably for hosting more than 500 of 900-950 geysers worldwide - per park videos and the park website! I encourage you to try to experience seeing old faithful erupt close to sunrise or sunset if possible! My life feels richer for having been able to experience this firsthand!

If you can't give Old Faithful a full five USA Stars you have no soul. If you can just go here. Period.

We visited on 4th of July and at a time when many are still dealing with COVID restrictions. The park itself was not crowded and that meant no issues at Old Faithful. Got great parking. No dogs allowed so we left ours in the car. Walked up and within minutes it went off just as it started sprinkling. It's just as magnificent as it was 6 years ago when I last saw it. Very friendly gift shift where we bought some souvenirs to include a Christmas ornament. Clean restrooms and the entire place is handicap friendly. Definitely worth the stop but know she only goes 20 times a day, so depending on when you show up, you might have to wait over an hour. Side note, if playing the 'license plate' game, this place is a jackpot!

Follow the crowds or the signs to the observation point. The National Park people have done an excellent job of setting up a semi-circle of benches about 100 feet from the mouth of Old Faithful. There isn't any shade at the benches, but if you do need shade then there are some trees another 50 feet or so back. During our wait, the benches were reasonably comfortable though they did get crowded on a weekday afternoon in mid-August. People will still stand up and you'll still hear the kids getting bored, but when Old Faithful shows up, you won't miss it. It is a short walk from the parking lot to the observation point and a short walk to the gift shops. If you truly can't make it to Wyoming, then observe online: https://www.nps.gov/yell/learn/photosmultimedia/webcams.htm

Located directly next to the Old Faithful Inn, the geyser can be viewed from an observation deck that encircles about a 1/3 of the circumference surrounding it, or from an upper porch of the Inn. One word of warning there is a small area that might appear tempting to view from because of the lack of people crowding this area, this is because a large bulge in the ground obstructs the view. The geyser pretty much goes off on schedule, +- 10 minutes. The staff of the inn posts the scheduled eruption time during the day. The eruption itself is quite amazing to see and lasts for several minutes. To get a good view you should show up early as it can get quite crowded with individuals both staying at the inn or just there for the geyser and surrounding thermal features. Staying at the inn we were able to see multiple eruptions.

Definitely a bucket list item. In the visitors center as you walk in there is an estimate of the next time it will go off which was super helpful. It was right on for us. The deck is well made for lots of visitors to see. In early May it wasn't too crowded, but the deck does go all the way around if you are looking to get away from the main crowd. If you are in Yellowstone and don't go, you really missed out.

Behind Old Faithful is the short 0.5-mile (one-way) up to Observation Point. There, I had an overlook of all the nearby geysers, as well as the lodge, visitor center, general store, etc. It's a very short and easy hike, but I found the view to be slightly blocked by some of the vegetation. I'm not advocating to kill the trees (!) but just wanted to give folks a heads up.

Great place to view Old Faithful from. However, it's a long walk up to the observation post. I think there are better ways to spend your time hiking in this geyser basin rather than go to the top but that is just my humble opinion. Enjoy Old Faithful, I think the average duration between irruption's is one hour and 50 minutes give or take a few. On another note, Old Faithful is pretty amazing with the moon out.

Statesman badge and a geyser, yea! A pretty good show despite the 44°F weather and a windchill that Weather.com told me put it right into the 30s... and yes, the phones worked fine (hurrah -- check in time!). Biggest -- and really, only -- complaint is a planning issue on our part coupled with the park's 35 and 45 MPH speed limits. My clever noggin hadn't fully planned on it taking as many hours as it did to traverse from the northern entrance to Faithful, wait the hour for the next blast (yea!) and out again. By then, darkness, and nothing more. And a minus star for the visitors center closing. That much I get, but c'mon, that appears to be the only set of doors into potties... it was a good stretch to find a picnic area with the iconic symbol for that which was sought after the seeing was done.

    Good old Faithful

There's no words for Beauty like this. Everyone needs to come and spend a week in Yellowstone just to get away from cell phones / electronic. It was nice to be able to use a paper map again. See the beauty of the nature. We seen bison, elk, chipmunks and of course the Old Faithful is a must. Enjoy your time in Yellowstone, I know our family will be coming back.

The drive from the West Entrance was essentially west to east, with a jog to the north halfway-there. The elevation was increasing most of the way, getting as high as 8244-ft. We found the turns on the drive to be visually confusing, because the curving roads turned our sense of direction. At the Madison stop sign, though the turn seemed odd, we turned left onto Grand Loop Road. That was northeast. It's correct. Passing Norris Geyser, it looked odd but we turned right (east) onto Norris Canyon Rd. Coming up to the east branch of the Loop Road, we turned right (south). The entrance to South Rim Drive was then a left. It's even more confusing on the way back, because they never seemed to put a sign saying "to West Entrance" until a mile past the turns :-). Pro tip: Keep a map in front of you at those turns! Once we turned onto South Rim Drive, we drove the winding way for less than 2-miles to the end. There was a large parking lot with plenty of open spaces, plus outhouses. It was a high elevation there, about 7700-ft, and some of us felt it. Conveniently, we could drop off those who walk less comfortably at the furthest end of the parking lot, about 250-feet from the best vista. We walked to the overlook on the left. t. The 1-mile view to the west along the Yellowstone River was stupendous, with the huge crashing misting Lower Falls waterfall dropping 308-feet. We were awed by the midday view. In fact, three of our group had gone their separate way by now, and when they saw our photos, they drove here on their own the next day! They say that sunrise often creates a rainbow in the mist, but we could not manage to pass through the west entrance early enough for the at-least 90-min (usually longer) drive. From what I read, you need a low sun-angle (less than 45°) to get a rainbow in the mist. Based on a (very-)very-nerdy NOAA Solar Calculator webpage, using the Lat-Lon and time, we might have been able to see a rainbow as late as 8:50am in July. (2026). I won't say who in our group figured that out, because I'd also have to say it was After our trip :-)

We hit the Lower Falls from two different angles, and the order we did it made all the difference. Start at Artist Point. From here, you get the full picture -- the entire canyon stretching out in front of you, walls layered in pink, red, orange, and white from thousands of years of iron-stained rock. The waterfall sits in the distance like something out of a painting, and the river winds through the bottom of a canyon that drops 800 to 1,200 feet deep. It gives you the context to appreciate everything else you're about to see. Blue sky, puffy clouds, massive scale -- this view alone is worth the drive. Then hike down to the Brink of the Lower Falls. This is where it gets real. You're standing right at the top of a 308-foot drop, watching the full force of the Yellowstone River launch off the edge. In early May, snowmelt had it absolutely roaring -- thick mist rising up, patches of snow still clinging to the rocks below, and if the sun hits right, a rainbow forms right at the base. See the canyon first. Then feel the power up close. That's the move. Absolutely mandatory stop in Yellowstone -- don't skip either viewpoint.
