On the grand scale of Oxford theatres, the Old Fire Station Theatre comes somewhere in the middle. It's not as big and commercialised as the New Theatre, nor as tiny and independent as the Burton Taylor or college theatres. With its 170-seat auditorium, it fills a nice gap and holds a range of performances from modern drama to Shakespeare (and there is a lot of Shakespeare here!). The prices are usually in the range of £10-14 and there's a good student discount. Matinees are good to catch on a Thursday, for a nice change to afternoon activities, but I find it's great to see an evening show then spend some time in one of George Street's restaurants or bars. It's hard to review a theatre independently of its shows, but in a way that's especially a compliment. I hate it when I spend most of a performance paying more attention to the uncomfortable seats or the intrusive lighting, squeaky stage or the hole in my purse after buying interval drinks. I haven't felt any of this at the OFS theatre. It's not the most glamorous of places, but it does the job and is well worth checking out for a good night out at the theatre. read more
