We were visiting my son and his wife at their Savannah home for a few days in January, 2019. We were fans of the movie "Glory" and knew that a part of the movie was shot at Fort Jackson in Savannah. We went to the Fort's website to get a sense of the place and noted that they had presentations twice a day: 11am and 2pm. We decided to make it for the 2pm presentation....why not? As we got into our cars, my son Geoff said to me " I've been here ten years and have seen the Fort but never visited." Staisha confirmed ...so it would be a new experience for all of us! It was a short drive from their home and as we pulled into the parking area, you get a great view of the Fort, the river and the open fields.... as we entered the Fort right about 2 o'clock, we were greeted by a re-enactor (of a soldier) from that period. He asked the visitors who were wandering around the Fort, to pull up a bench in the open area inside the Fort. He then proceeded to give an informative history of the Fort and how life was at that time. He was entertaining, quick and quite versed in the local history. He kept it interesting for the 30 people there ranging from kids to older folks (like myself!) He started off by asking "how many of you are from Savannah?" and to our surprise, only Geoff and Staisha were locals!!! (The locals are missing out!) We thoroughly enjoyed his presentation as he made the Fort alive, interesting and yes, fun.! This is a wonderful way to spend a morning or an afternoon. Check the calendar/time so you are there for a presentation. Well worth the visit... you come away with a good sense of the purpose and life at the Fort. As to its role in "Glory", that was not mentioned and we kinda forgot about it! We will have to go again! read more

I went around lunch time and what a treat it was! There were two cannon demonstrations, a rifle demonstration, and several educational talks about the history and life of the fort. The guides were knowledgable and fun to listen to. After they finished I toured the exhibits which were interesting. The demonstrations really made the experience though. read more

We came on an unusually cold day so it was not busy at all. We happened to come at the BEST TIME!! A demonstrator performed musket firing, and two cannon firings!!! It was great! We didn't plan on spending a little over two hours there, but he really captured our attention with his passion and attention to detail! My biggest mistake on my Savannah trip was not allowing enough time for Fort Jackson. I took a morning drive out to Tybee Island and planned on meeting my wife for lunch back in the Historic District. As I drove by the fort I decided that since I had a half hour to kill, I'd stop and check it out - wrong answer. I'm very glad I stopped, but I didn't really get to experience most of the site. I wandered in just as a gent in civil war attire was starting a presentation, he covered the history and geography of the region and conducted a presentation on how they loaded and fired their weapons. He was mesmerizing to watch, he knew his subject matter and was passionate about it. I was unable to tour the rest of the site or stay for the cannon firing. I also was given a bit of a jolt into the modern world; as I sat and listened to the guide discuss invading armies, a cargo ship silently came into view above the top of the fort. The juxtaposition of what I thought was a huge fort was made miniscule by the this invading floating merchant. An image that I'll always remember. A must visit for anyone in the area. read more

Old Fort Jackson is a MUST see if in the area. We have been to many forts all over the US and this was one of the most interesting and engaging demonstrations and experiences we have done. We have a 4 year old that was very engaged, they had us marching and participating in the re-enactments. The canon firing was pretty great, they had two different canons they fired. The staff was enthusiastic and passionate about the fort, the history and the preservation. They took the time to talk to everyone. We were there for about two hours. read more

Very small, very quaint, yet a great historical site to come out and visit. I was passing through the area and saw it on a list of to-do's so I thought I'd go and do. You cannot just walk onto the grounds for free; you have to pay $7 to get in there...you can take pictures from the outside of the grounds, but you won't get to see very much. So if you're gonna drive out to this little area, you might as well cough up the dough to come check it out. They do a live cannon firing which is pretty cool as i'd never seen one before. I didn't get to stay too long because as I said, I was just passing through, but I got my $7 worth...just for the cannon firing alone :) I would recommend this to probably more history buffs than your typical tourist, but the kids might enjoy the demo. read more

Had a great time here on the 4th of July! Best part is the kids learned history while taking part in 2 different battle reenactments. They had play guns and ambushed the "patriots". They also learned Naval sword fighting techniques used during the War of 1812. I wish I was able to learn the history I was learning in school like this. The actors at the fort teaching the kids and big kids love what they are doing. It could not have been more fun. The employees deserve a raise for being outside all day in the 100 degree temps in heavy costumes. The kids want to go back again the next time we go to Savanah. Great place! Very hot very interesting. Went on Monday around noon so it wasn't very crowded. Staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. Fort was easy to navigate. Make sure you stay for the firing of the Canon that happens daily. We saw everything we wanted and the cannon firing and we're still only there about an hour and a half read more

Okay--if you've already made the short drive away from Downtown Savannah and paid the admission, I totally recommend taking the free "tour". Come on-- you can superficially see the entire Old Fort in an hour. THE TOUR MOVED ME Before I entered the Fort I saw the crowd of people by the waterfront so I just jumped into the tour while men dressed in colonial gear demonstrated firing a canon. Following that, we were led into the Fort where benches were prepared for us to sit. What followed wasn't exactly a tour but the guides playing different characters and each delivering storytelling speeches about the road of early America to war. I was very impressed with the three men--their storytelling really made me cheer for their characters and share their fears despite the too-nice-looking (at least to me) costume they wore. However I did feel like altogether it was rather long--although I can't see a good way to shorten it. The acting was great but got the point that I was thinking... "another one?" whenever one man's spiel ended and another began. WALK AROUND THE FORT The highlights in my memory are the barracks, latrines (heehee) and the cannons up top. In order to get a background and explanation for certain things there are plaques and signs in various locations. Although there was enough description, I feel like there could've been more signs describing things that were obviously in front of you--signs telling more about the "why's." (Ex: near the cannons there could be a sign showing how the cannons worked. Or signs saying what patrollers on top would do in their free time) FOR THE FAMILIES Children will be entertained by the actors when they're actually moving (like the cannon demonstration) but the speeches may bore them. There's not a lot of scenery change within this fort, however the small second floor has great views of the Savannah River as well as cannons to touch. read more

Fire, fire, fire! We were taken around and shown demonstrations by the tour guides, who fired cannons and guns while enacting how it was like in the Civil and Revolutionary Wars. It was pretty cool to learn some history and not sweat in the hot sun. There was no extra charge for the tour as well. read more

Had a lot of fun today taking a step into the past and learning more about how forts work and we got to see a cannon being shot. It was fun to walk around the fort and the view was beautiful! It's so nice that we still have things like this around preserved so we can understand the past more. The gentleman leading the tour was very enthusiastic to share his passion with all of us. The fort is interesting. This is a great way to learn history or refresh your history knowledge in a hands on way. I have given it 3 stars because unfortunately due to COVID and other factors, many of the trails were not opened, and they were using this COVID year to do maintenance on the fort. Other than that, it would have gotten 5 stars. The portions of the fort we were able to visit and the trails were well maintained and thoroughly labeled. It was nice to read the stories of the time. I would highly recommend visiting the fort, but suggest doing it after COVID. read more

We saw this fort while taking a cruise on the Savannah River. Located right on the river, it is only 3 miles from the Savannah Historic District. They do cannon firings at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM. That was very interesting. The reenactor wore a confederate period uniform for the rank of sergeant in the artillery. He went through the steps required for each firing. Fort was built on a swamp so a proper foundation had to be put into place to keep the heavy fort from sinking into the marsh. Also, as you might imagine, there were serious mosquito-borne diseases with which the soldiers had to contend. Top that off with wool uniforms in the Georgia heat and a galley near the latrine, and you have a difficult tour of duty. read more

This landmark is an absolutely wonderful stop! The staff (McDonough really stood out!) are all trained historians and know the history of the landmark (by-war) like the back of their hands. During our time (3 hours at the park!) we were educated on the Fort's involvement in each war, and we were able to see them fire each individual cannon as well as War of 1812-era rifles. The scenery here is beautiful, it's worth it to bring a picnic to enjoy on the grounds, and the area was very kid-and-dog-friendly (we will bring our pooch next time!). read more

I went to visit Old Fort Jackson as part of a conference excursion so I am yelping this, knowing that my experience was unlike most. Visiting forts are not usually my thing, even being a southern gal, it's just not something that I find appealing. For the event I attended, the Fort was turned into an evening feast area, set during the Civil War era. Fort Jackson sits along the Savannah River, and is Georgia's oldest standing brick fortification. I learned that the fort never saw battle, as Sherman stopped before getting to Old Fort. Savannah residents say it's the only positive thing Sherman did for the south. The event was catered by Creative Catering and had all of the southern foods you can ask for. A full buffet awaited, while an oyster bar area was set up at various picnic tables. Again, not my thing, but for some, this was heaven. Lights were strung across the fort that resembled lanterns, and civil war reenactors served the food, sang songs, shot off real cannons, and made the evening as nice as it could be, while still keeping the tradition of history during the civil war. While walking around the fort, you are able to venture inside old jails, sleeping quarters, see old artifacts, and go to the top where the lookout towers are. It is a wonderful view of the Savannah River- the best part about the entire evening. I probably wouldn't venture to Old Fort Jackson on my own, or during the day, but an evening event, with the view, is something I would definitely do again! read more

This was an absolute gem. The entire staff are all trained history college graduates who the history of the place inside and out. We spent about 3 hours at the park. During that time they covered each war (revolutionary, 1812, and civil war). They had demonstrations in which they fired cannons, rifles, and how training was done on sword fighting. You can certainly make an all day event out of it by having a picnic. It's also kid and pet friendly. Just make sure the kids and pets don't get frightened over the loud cannons. read more

My husband and I had a wonderful morning learning all about the fort. Sargent Bradford was such an animated tour guide that we didn't realize how much time we spent at the fort. We were presented with a lot of really interesting information about the fort and the time periods it was used in. We also got to experience shooting demonstrations of muskets and cannons. The fort's living historian Aaron Bradford couldn't have been more professional and was very knowledgeable in the history of the fort, battlefield surgery, military tactics, politics and strategies of the period, what the soldiers experienced daily, and so much more. The demonstrations and programs were very educational. Highly recommended for all ages. So much effort is put into the overall experience of your visit here. This landmark is not government owned or state owned, so your admission fee and any donations is what keeps this place open. A must visit while in Savannah. read more

If you're an American history buff, then you gotta check this place out. Old Fort Jackson is run by an independent group that receives no government funding, so you're supporting a local organization by buying admission or donating. They've done a great job educating the people about the history and construction of this place. There are also several preserved artifacts from that period and some cool displays in the museum. And of course, the cannon firing is definitely a memorable part of the experience at Old Fort Jackson.
