Before I review this barbershop, I need to explain a few things about the chain of events that led me here, because without that context the haircut would make absolutely no sense. This all started more summers ago than my substance addled brain can recall when I accidentally befriended a raccoon behind a liquor store one messy night. Not just any raccoon. A raccoon that had clearly consumed a concerning amount of bourbon. I discovered him at roughly 2:30 AM sitting inside a tipped-over recycling bin, clutching a half-empty bottle of Wild Turkey like a recently divorced uncle. His eyes were glassy. His fur looked like he had fought a lawn mower and won. When I approached, he stood up on his hind legs, stared directly at me, and burped with the authority of a dock worker who has been drinking since noon. I named him Captain Randolph, obviously. Now, Captain Randolph and I developed a bit of an understanding. Mostly that if I left him alone, he wouldn't scream at me like a Victorian ghost. Unfortunately this peaceful relationship ended when a beam of green light descended from the sky and abducted both of us. Yes. Aliens. Understand that these were not your typical little grey run-of-the-mill butt probing aliens. These were intergalactic pirates. Their spaceship looked like someone had built a galleon out of an enormous chrome dildo (with sails for some reason). The captain had six arms, an eyepatch, and a beard made entirely of glowing tentacles (which were suspiciously penis-y at the tips). They informed me (telepathically) that they had been scanning Earth for "rare biological anomalies." Apparently the anomaly they detected was the drunk raccoon screaming slurs at a streetlight. Captain Randolph was promoted to "Honorary Navigator." I was labeled "Hair Situation: Catastrophic." Over the next several weeks, because time is weird in space, we traveled through parts of the galaxy that can only be described as aggressively stupid. We raided a moon made entirely of cheese. We got into a laser sword fight with a group of sentient sea cucumbers. Captain Randolph stole a small cannon and attempted to duel a vending machine. At one point we stopped at an asteroid bar where pirates from twelve galaxies were arguing about which planet invented barbecue. A lizard the size of a Honda Civic tried to braid my hair and stopped halfway through after whispering, "Gurrrrrrl... this is beyond help." Eventually the alien pirate captain pulled me aside and said something I'll never forget: "Human... your hair carries the chaotic energy of Captain Randolph the Honorary Navigator's liver function." Which honestly felt fair. Twasnt cute. The crew debated what to do about it. One alien suggested shaving my head with a plasma saw. Another suggested launching me into a wormhole and hoping the gravitational shear solved the problem. But Captain Randolph the bourbon raccoon (now wearing a tiny pirate hat) stood up on a barrel and screamed what I can only assume was raccoon for: "THIS MAN NEEDS A BARBER OR I QUIT HENCEFORTH *hiccup* FORTHWITH." The pirates consulted their galactic navigation charts and discovered a small glowing dot on Earth labeled: "Old Habits Barbershop" They immediately returned us to Earth because apparently the universe respects a clean haircut and Captain Randolph needed to go to rehab. Which brings us to my experience. I walked into this barbershop with the hair equivalent of a hurricane that had been through three divorces and a botched facelift. The barber Trent looked at it. Paused. Nodded. Sixty minutes later I walked out with a skin fade so clean and tight, you might've mistaken my scalp for the enormous intergalactic penis shaped chrome pirate ship. Captain Randolph, who now lives somewhere near the dumpsters behind the Taco Bell off Denny Way, looked up at me, squinted approvingly, and passed out in a puddle of what I strongly suspect was his own urine. Anyway. Great shop. Great people. Incredible haircuts. Five stars. read more

Man this place is spot on. My Barber was Trent. Trent Truly has the art of hair cutting down. First time for Trent to cut my hair. I showed Trent a photo and off to the races. BEST HAIRCUT I'VE EVER HAD. First time. I went in to see Lindsey. The place is nice. Very clean. Contemporary but tasteful in a classic sort of way. Both Lindsey and Trent were very warm and welcoming. Easy to find. Ample parking. I had about a foot of hair to lop off. I have thick wavy big hair. First hair cut in maybe 8 years. I showed her some reference photos of what I was after. SHE NAILED IT. Exceeded expectations. Some very sophisticated artistry and craftsmanship. blending, tapering, scissor fade? Took out some volume from my thick puffy rats nest. Lots of layering and texturizing. My hope was that it would look "natural" and it does. Courteous. Professional. Effortless flow of conversation. Tracy is a legend, look no further!! She has been cutting my hair for years, keeping me looking fresh and feelin good. Whether it's a lil trim to clean things up before an event or an epic mop chop because I haven't been cut in months (I'm lazy like that), she always gets me back in the mix. Old Habits is something of an actual old habit for me; I followed Trent here from his chair in cap hill. I keep getting my hair cut by Trent simply because he nails it every time. Finding someone who can cut Asian hair well can be something of unicorn. Plus Lindsay and the rest of the barbers are plenty sweet. The shop itself is super comfy and green - lots of plants, mint tile floor, and forest green classic barbershop chairs. You can also drink a complimentary Rainer, which never hurts. I initially discovered Trent at his last spot through Yelp after struggling to find a barber I liked when I moved to Seattle a couple years ago. I have "hard" Asian hair and have been told my hair is hard to cut and deal with. From the get-go, Trent was totally on point. Technically, he is the best barber I have ever had including ones I used to go to out east in Boston and NYC. Even more impressive is his interpersonal skills; he is kind, thoughtful and very grounded. Skills+Interpersonals=A+ barber. EDIT July 2020 - I had completely forgotten I wrote this but Trent just called me (I went to schedule with another barber who is very good there) and told me I can't come back because his poor ego is bruised that he got called out on doing a bad job. Absolutely no problem buddy. He called this review scathing... this was not scathing. It was honest. I called it a boring basic haircut. I didn't discuss his whiny personality or how he spent more time telling me how good he is rather than giving me athe haircut I asked for and have had before from others. Learn to take feedback bruh. That's why reviews exist. I got home that night, took a closer look and the haircut was sub par in every way. I've been getting my haircut at barber shops for 15 years and this was the first time I was annoyed enough to write a review. And now I'm back writing an update! Avoid Trent if you go to this place. Stick with Ali. Oh wow. I haven't laughed this hard in a long time.... who calls a customer on the phone to harass them when they were trying to support a queer barber in their shop?? What a tool. Haaah. Original post: I went to Trent bc I was in a time crunch. Came in for a specific haircut and didn't get at all what I asked for. Was facing away so I couldn't see how short he cut it (despite explicitly stating to leave the length on top front and only take weight from the back). I might've been able to stop it had my chair not been turned to the middle of the room (this is a barber shop trend I hate). He also didnt do taper on the sides I asked for either despite showing a picture of my own hair from a year ago and how I like it. He tapered way to high. Walked away with a mediocre, basic, boring haircut. Didn't realize truly how wrong it was until I got home and spent some time in the mirror. Trent might be fine if you're a basic person looking for a barber who will cut you hair how he's likely cuts everyone else's. Not good if you want something specific. Definitely a hidden gem! I couldn't be happier with this place in its entirety, to the extent that I'm actually leaving a yelp review. All around 5 stars to the shop culture, price point, precision skills, and surprisingly great geographic location if you need to navigate around rush our traffic. Trent is awesome. I got a hair cut from him a few years back, tried to go to his old shop recently and he wasn't there, so I worked with someone else and got a haircut I hated. Immediately hunted down where Trent was and booked an appointment at Old Habits. I explained to him that I just got this haircut and it wasn't what I wanted at all. I had long hair, I wanted it to stay long. The person I saw a few days ago totally botched that. Way too short. Only option was to go shorter. I don't get hair cuts often and I can't articulate what I want to a stylist or barber, but I had shown this person pictures of what I wanted and got...nothing along those lines. With Trent, I just asked him to fix it. My only ask was 'I don't want to see my scalp.' Dude's a magician. I'm pretty sure this is the exact hair cut I got from him two years ago, with more or less the same set of instructions. 'I hate my hair, please fix it.' My beard is lined up. My haircut is clean. The people were nice, the dog is cute, the music is good, the prices are fair. I'm not going anywhere else as long as Trent is here. read more

I love this place! Trent was my first real barber and I've been going to him for 3 years. I used to go to Great Clips and they made my hair kind of weird so I decided to pay a little more, go somewhere nicer, and get a better cut. I remember meeting Trent and saying, "Just do what you think would look nice." and he fixed my hair. Ever since then, I'm gonna stick with Old Habits for as long as I can. Tucked away in the old Rainier brewery is this gem of a barbershop. Experienced, Talented and charming barbers. They know what they are doing. They keep a clean space and refreshing decor, and offer you a beer when you get in the chair. And not to mention easy (free) parking. I have been a huge fan of Trent for years and followed him from his previous shop when he opened his own place. It's more of a drive for me to get there but unlike cap hill parking is always easy to find plus it's free. So it's well worth the extra distance for a great cut and no headaches getting there on time. While I am loyal to the shop because of Trent, I am terrible about remembering to schedule haircuts and am usually prompted to get an appointment by comments from my wife. That means I am often well overdue for a cut and so multiple times I have booked whoever had the soonest availability that worked for me. Luckily Trent and Lindsay have high standards of who works at their shop so I have always ended up with a great cut no matter who it was. Another way I am reminded to get a cut is that every time we drive by the Rainer building my daughter begs to stop and visit Chef and Velvet, the resident shop dogs. read more

I've referred several friends to Trent in the past. When he decided to open up his own shop with Lindsey at Old Rainier Brewery in SoDo I knew I'd follow him there without a question. The new barbershop looks great! They put a ton of thought into the design of the space and have put in massive amounts of time and effort to make it happen. You get what you pay for! Trent and Lindsey have been the most incredible caretakers of my hair for the last couple years. I was referred to them when my other barber moved to LA. I recently moved to Bothell, which is a 30-45 minute drive from Old Habits. I saw a trendy looking barber shop about a 2 minute walk from my new place and decided to give it chance. I thought, if this works out I could save myself an hour plus round trip whenever I need a hair cut. Lets just say I won't making that mistake again. Within 1 minute my entire head was botched. Jim Carrey in Dumb and Dumber looked better than I did with that stupid bowl on his head. I had to wait a couple months to let it grow out. I couldn't book an appointment with Trent fast enough. I went in there today with my tail between my legs and explained what had happened. Trent laughed it off and told me not to worry. Long story short, best hair cut of my life. I can honestly say that every time I walk out of Old Habits. Whether it's Trent or Lindsey, you know you're in best hands. They take their time and pay attention to every minor detail of each client. They are also some of the nicest most personable people you'll ever interact with. If you're looking for a new barber shop and on the fence, look no further. Old Habits is the best shop in town.
