The house is situated by the river in Florenceville-Bristol, which is home to McCains -- french fry capital of the world. There are only 5 rooms total, so it is almost like an exclusive little boutique hotel. And at $95/night, it's a good price. The keeper, a very friendly Irish man, told me that many McCains employees get flown in and stay at Shamrock Suites -- sometimes for months -- when they are working for projects on the plantations. The rooms: I think each room is themed differently. My room had a beach/water theme, with light robins' egg blue paint, and sea decor (you can really tell they put a lot of effort into putting some character into each room with the starfish decorations, fish paintings, and even shellfish soap dishes). My friends' room had a theme which I will call "Paris decadence". The walls were pink, and the room had a pink & white chandelier, rose lamp, posters of Paris, and flower decorations. The amenities: The kitchen is fully stocked with bread, tea, coffee, jam, eggs, etc., and there is no check-out time, so there is a very casual atmosphere. There is a washer & dryer available for free as well as complimentary wifi. I see it as you're living in your own home, but someone cleans up your mess and does all the dusting and sweeping. Pretty good, no? Not much to do around town except for the potato tour, but if you're passing through, i'd highly recommend coming here.

They clearly enjoy getting to know their guests and even making appropriate adjustments to their needs. We spent much of the evening sitting on the back porch watching the sun set over the Saint John River. We took lots of photographs! Our room downstairs was private and quiet. Since we were visiting in the summer, it was actually nice not to be awakened by the rising sun at 5am! We slept very well on the comfortable bed. Breakfast was also plentiful and awesome (and made to order). Bruce can cook up great eggs.

Be aware that there is no on-site manager here and good luck trying to reach anyone on the phone if you have an issue. The owners, who live downstate somewhere, believe that managing 5 or 6 of their northern Maine hotels from afar is a great idea ... It's NOT! Their solution to not having an on-site manager is to have the cleaning person lodge the key-card into the (outside) doorframe, so when you arrive, you just let yourself in w/out any contact w/management whatsoever. Imagine showing up without knowing if anyone who doesn't belong has been in and out of your room, and is possibly STILL IN THERE WHEN YOU ARRIVE! This is so unsafe and a real problem waiting to happen. No on-site management means no enforcement of quiet hours, non-smoking areas, and no immediate help if it's needed. There is no active police force in this town, so you're essentially on your own if something very bad happens. The last time I stayed at Aroostook Hospitality Inn, the upstairs guests had a 3-room party. They just left all three doors open, cranked up the music and ran back and forth with each other between the three rooms. Unfortunately, my room was located underneath one of those rooms. There were also a lot of vehicles and foot traffic in and out of the parking lot all night. No manager available to eliminate this problem. FYI to the owner of this place ... the cleaner isn't cleaning! I have arrived here to find bars of soap in the shower, full trashcans, hair in the shower, moldy shower curtain, hair and toothpaste in the sink and on the bathroom counter, empty toilet paper rolls, no coffee pot as requested during reservation. It's impossible to find the housekeeper, so a trip to the Dollar Store was necessary. The single bathroom outlet wasn't working the last time I was there. That's just the inside ... the outside of this place generally unkept. The lot is littered with cigarette butts and bits of trash/paper - and there was a syringe on the ground next to my car in the morning! It's a real bummer this is the only place in Van Buren, Maine to lay your head. If anyone decides to make a new hotel or motel in town - they'll get very rich! Maybe part of the solution for this place is for the owners to spend more than one night here to get a real idea of what their guests experience.

We did leave a note for the front desk to give it to the owner. We visit our family once - twice per year but we will never recommend this dirty .. nasty place. Choice hotel customer care has to step in and they were amazing. They documented every phone call, conversation and put in all the remarks from both end. It took us like 30 something phone calls and almost a month for our 2 nights out of 4 nights for our refund. Empty promises by quality Inn management team but thank goodness for choice hotel staff for stepping in. Please do yourself a favor and stay somewhere else. Will never have our business ever. We checked out on the 10/20/2024 and they charged our credit card on 10/26/2024 .. this is fraudulent!!! But they somehow did a credit back to the card so it disappeared of the statement but I was able to snap a picture for our future reference. The customer service and the front desk were very unprofessional and rude. They don't care about the customers at all. The room is filthy and the chair and sofa were very dirty and the toilet has shut stains and they claim that the room is clean. Gross all around especially the breakfast room!
