Many years ago (1972) I spent a week at the Red River Camps with my father and grandfather. I…read moreremember a rugged camp with the traditional lodge and out cabins. So I wanted the same experience for my sons so I contacted Jen Brophy proprietor of Red River Camp and made a reservation with just my memories. With my two sons, my brother and his son, we began our adventure. After an exhausting 14 hour drive up to Portage and a 26 mile dirt road experience to get to the Camps we were welcomed by Miss Brophy and shown to our cabin. The camp was nowhere near what I had remembered. Miss Brophy a petite red hair woman was the consummate hostess. Always a smile and a hello even as she was hauling a 200 pound propane cylinder up the steep hill to the work shed. Business wise, this woman is on point. We stayed at Touge Cabin nestled at edge of the Island Pond. Our accommodations were not what I remembered. I chose the American plan for this trip because I did not want to be bothered by cooking and cleaning up. The price included our four bedroom cottage, full bath with hot water on demand and a full living room. I must say the beds were comfortable and just what one needed after a day of fishing or hiking. The price included all meals. You went to the main log lodge with a giant cathedral ceiling, stuffed bears, wood stove and reading chairs. There you sat at a large table for your meals. The woman who ran the kitchen was Gloria. With an extensive background as a veteran chief at her husband's bear camps this woman could be the next Master Chief. Coffee was at 6a.m. With breakfast at 7. Every morning we were greeted to a hot muffin, blueberry scone, or Cinnamon roll with homemade blueberry, or peach jam. Then eggs to order, pancakes or oatmeal and of course fresh baked bread. Then you order your box lunch of turkey, roast beef or PBJ, on of course homemade bread and then go fishing or hiking. Diners were at 6pm when the steeple bell chimes. Every diner was a four star presentation from NY Strip steaks cooked to order to spaghetti and meat balls over homemade fettuccini to pork loin with Fern fiddle heads and pork roast. Then comes desert with wonderful cakes, apple crumble with vanilla ice-cream and much more. Gloria, you are the best! This Camp is for everyone. Families to the retired couple, fishermen to hikers just wanting a getaway. All in all, I give the Read River Camps a 5 star out of 5

The cabin was nice, it had a really comfortable king size bed, wood stove, bathroom, deck. The bathroom was new and clean and the screened in front deck that was perfect for watching ducks swim around, fish jump, ect, on the lake. Jen and Gloria cook for you every night and morning and than pack a lunch for you if you want to go out fishing, hiking, or whatever. We loved every meal. They even surprised me with a great birthday cake. Chocolate with raspberry filling. Yum!! There's plenty of hiking, fishing, sightseeing, to do right in the area. You have to drive pretty far into the woods but it's totally worth it. Lots of wildlife to see too.

TERRIBLE!! Will never use this airport again!! I'm a 68 well spoken, professional, well dressed…read morewoman, and this tiny one airline airport security, made me go thru more of patdown on my entire body, hands in the air, rear and front privates, in public viewing! They held up the entire flight from departure 30 min because of this! It was embarrassing getting on the plane and people looking at me as if I was late, when I was the first person at the airport, excepting the staffers.I ended up losing my iphone at my connecting Newark airport flight, because they tore apart everything so bad, in my luggage that I had no idea where anything was after they tore my bags apart! My phone had fallen out of one of the pockets somewhere at the airport. Fortunately, someone found it & I just got it back. BUT, the 2 weeks it was reported Lost on Find My Phone, in the interim, I had spent $1200 at the Apple Store buying a new one. I have the receipt. They need to replace it, because of this search. Tearing apart my luggage do horrefically like that, and to NOT put everything back as they got it. It cost me a lot of money, time and undue inconvenience and stress!! This should be on the 6:00 news it was so bad!! They treated this 'church girl', like I was an armed robber or a drug dealer. They "said" their alarm was triggered, because I had red beet powder called "Total Beets" in my carry on. They tested it with special colored tiny bottles of "food dye looking" liquids, for drugs & got on their phone to diagnose the results with their higher up. They even scanned my small battery powerbank for my cellphone. They tore apart my very organized carry on AND my paid luggage. It was embarrassing, time wasting and rude. I went thru Newark and Detroit airports on my way to Maine with the EXACT same luggage. No security went off at all. I've travelled to Europe, Africa ISRAEL, Canada ... MANY times. I have lived in the largest border city in our entire country and often crossed daily, (Windsor-Detroit) with the highest level of criminals & terrorists, going thru this border. NEVER have I been treated like this with any border crossing, or airport security in 50 years of driving and flying! I just drove 5,000 miles crossing canada and usa borders; cross Mexico, Canada & USA borders from west coast to east coast.... Not one border police treated me like this & my vehicle was loaded down my healhy nutriments and vitamins. THIS by far, was completely despicable and embarrassing and it makes me want to sue this airport. The man sitting beside me, told me of the countless times it has happened to him, flying in & out of this tiny airport & this happens to him almost every flight! He said he has seen them do the same thing to another 80 yr old lady and countess others EVERY time he uses this airport. Despicable when they are obvious, ONLY keeping their "stats high" .... This was NOT about any alarm that sounded off, this was ONLY them keeping their searches stat reports, kept at a high level they must meet and report to their boss. Now you know never to use this airport. Otherwise, everything at the airport, was wonderful. They employees were a delight and super helpful. It was clean and very friendly IF you can get on the plane to get out of Maine: I'll NEVER fly in here again. I despise this airport!!

The only airline available in and out is Pen Air, an…read moreairline I never heard before, but appearantly is funded from the government to fly in and out of rural areas. I found out Pen Air is part of Alaskan Airlines. As of early May, I heard now that the airline and only route to and from Boston is changing now. The plane the Pen Air uses looks old and scary. I heard all the different parts of the plane when I flew from and into Boston. This was the smallest airport I have ever seen and looked out of date. There is no coffee shops, restaurants, or even a simple small bar. There is a vending machine area though. I think the coolest thing I saw there was the small airport museum there. That airport has a lot of history especially during the war years. Only one rent a car service from "Ace." Never heard of them. Parking I think is free. Other then that nothing is spectacular there. At least there are commercial flights out of that airport in that area otherwise you will be driving up to 4 hours to Quebec City in Canada for the next commercial airline a availability.

There is also a very new wood burning stove with lots of wood. There is also a wall heater that is fueled by propane. Stocked with cutlery, service utensils, glasses, & mugs. Has a large Blackstone grill under cover. Chairs around the outside of the property. Owners supplied a large cooler. * Outdoor sink. Two large picnic tables. Typical outhouse, is very new & close to front door. State owned bathroom just a few minute drive. * Large outdoor shower with HOT water near front door. * All amenities very easy to use just follow the directions. * Mountain trails for hikes for every level of hiker with signs of wildlife. * Nearby - Produce stand called Arnold's Farm Market nearby. * Fort Kent -Canadian Border Crossing & the Swamp Bucket restaurant. * Presque Isle - coffee shops & The Riverside Inn Restaurant. * Caribou - go to "Sleepers" for clothing & the bowling alley.
