An easy evening excursion. It operates Tues. from 4-8PM and extends to the bay (convention center) and the corner Rite Aid pharmacy (a good 7 blocks?). A MIXED VENUE with food trucks, produce, health and beauty products, and some crafts and accessories. I am not sure but sometimes I hear music from a distance. Yes, they're only open during evening hours til 7 pm on Tuesdays, but come out especially during holidays to check out excellent holiday vibes. Absolutely beautiful and safe to walk through. Just one street, but filled with good vibes, fresh veggies and fruits, food stands, breads, honey, happy spirits, etc. I actually like this Farmer's Market better than ones in the San Francisco Bay Area. It's a different crowd with more street space to walk on. They did a fantastic job with the fully lit up streets and Christmas lights on the trees. Beautiful Winter walk. Not much happening in downtown Monterey these days. It's like ghost town during daylight, but everything is still open. Love crepe places and all the beautifully lit up restaurants. They just don't have enough customers around here these days. Not crowded. Plenty free street parking after 6 pm or just park 1-2 hours free along the streets before 6 pm. Note, vegetables and fruits are much more expensive by the pounds here. But, you're still getting good ones for the value. Love everything Monterey. I'm glad the Farmer's Market is still operating. Definitely take family and friends here if off on a Tuesday evening dinner hours. Public ice skating rink is open near the end of street before Fisherman's Wharf too. The place is well lit, so it definitely satisfied my expectations for a night walk. Nothing ghetto yet. Just look around and you'll feel the Tuesday night holiday vibes in December. One of BEST Farmers Market's you will ever experience. This weekly event is HUGE! It seems to go on and on and etc... It must be three or four city blocks in all with many food vendors, artists and various other types of booths. It really is a good time and visited by many people each week. Summertime in Monterey is nearly over, for teachers that is, and I found myself visiting the marketplace again. There are so many produce stands and fun items to look at. On this visit I decided to finally try the sushi truck Maido, as there is always a line and I haven't had sushi in forever. I ordered two items so I could have leftovers. First a beef teriyaki bowl with half tofu and veggies. You are able to do half when you order a large. The smoked salmon roll is delicous and I scarfed down the bowl. Some of the meat had fat pieces, a bit disappointing, but the overall flavor and quality of the rice was really good. I also purchased a watermelon drink from the horchata stand across from the sushi. Next to the sushi is a wood burning oven where calzones were being made. The sights and smells here are super fun. Watch out with the fruit though as I tried some donut nectarines and when buying some the majority were already super ripe and some even had mold beginning on them. No biggie, I only bought two. Loads of gorgeous dinosaur kale at a veggie vendor along with the coolest looking bell peppers. Veggie soup supplies! Check. There are many other food choices here such as baked potatoes, roasted chicken, gyros, chips and homemade salsa, so if you are hungry your sure to find a treat. Lastly, I love the vegan desserts down at the farther end by the sushi. DulceVida Desserts offers homemade yumminess! I am not a proclaimed vegan but I love desserts! They are not too sweet and just right. On this trip I purchased an apple/pear crumble to enjoy with my morning coffee. Perfect! If you are in the area when the market is happening, Just GO! This is a great event, but it is NOT a Farmer's Market. This is a collection of vendors coming together to sell their wares. There were more crafters and food trucks/stands than farmers every time I've been to this one. And many of the booths that have produce, etc, aren't even their own produce. They're the middle man who went to a farmer and bought the products to then mark up to sell to you. A Farmer's Market is simply that: FARMERS, offering fresh food straight from THEIR OWN farms to you, the customer. A Farmer's Market is fresh produce, eggs, meat, sold by people who know every detail about that produce. They know the variety names, they know the details about each variety and what sets that variety apart from the next one. They are happy to talk with you about the produce and are enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge with you. I've found exactly ONE local farm that sells at local popup markets like this one and I don't believe this is the one they go to, that knows their products inside and out like real farmers would. To say I am disappointed in this market is an understatement. I will give it two stars, though, because it's fun as a popup market. It's just NOT a Farmer's Market as it likes to try to claim to be. read more

I'm with April Y, this is not a Farmers Market. pre pandemic it was a place you could buy locally grown produce and flowers directly from the farmers with a few craft venders and food trucks thrown in. For decades it was the place to grab your produce for the week and enjoy live music & food along with a sense of community. It appears to cater to tourists now with few produce stands or local people shopping. Call it whatever you want but it's kind of embarrassing as a Farmer's Market. The best place to buy produce directly from local farmers is Del Monte Center on Friday mornings! read more

We wasted part of an evening of our vacation trying to find it, with Yelp and Google both giving the information that it was open with masks required. Finally, the next day, I looked harder trying to figure out what happened, and found that their actual official web site does say that it's currently on hold. I love strolling through the Monterey Farmer's Market. There are lots of vendors showcasing all their special wares. Any type of cuisine you may be craving can be satisfied here. They have Indian (naan curry wraps yum yum), Mexican, Japanese, Cuban, Italian, Greek, Persian, Lebanese, Thai, Korean, Seafood, BBQ and so much more. The local produce is outstanding with excellent prices too. I got a 3-pack of delicious strawberries for only $5.00 and a 6lb bag of oranges for only $6.00! Salads brought over from the Salad Bowl capital, Salinas Valley, are only $2.00 a bag or 3 for $5.00. You can choose from spinach, spring mixes and ceasar and, of course, mix and match. Be sure to check out the infused olive oils, balsalmic vinegars from around the world and preserves from Mediterreaneo Imports. The beautuful fresh flower arrangements are a great way to bring some cheer into your home. Jefferey's spiced pecans are wonderful. They are perfect for a light snack and for spicing up any salad. Emi's Biscotteria has the best biscotti's, along with some toothsome cookies and cannoli's. Be sure to get there well before closing because everything goes fast! The Apricot Almond Biscotti's and the wedding cookies are nectarious. I keep coming back every Tuesday to restock my cookie supply. Off the main artery, you will find sweet treat alley. Angelina's Bakery has some wonderful eclairs, cream puffs and frosted cookie treats. There's baklava, donuts, giant cookies, gourmet cupcakes, churros, fresh baked European loaves, pies, brownies, muffins and more. Right now Farmers is open till 7pm and starting May 15th they will be extending the fun till 8 pm. The Monterey Farmer's Market is bustle of activity - crowded, but not unreasonably so - worth stopping by if you're hungry. I don't have a sweet tooth, so I overlooked any baker's wares. What I did see was fresh fruits, vegetables and meats - the greasy ribs and chicken being cooked at one vendor looked and smelled delish! There's also a nice choice of ethnic foods. read more

For a city as small as Monterey, I think this Farmer's Market is pretty up there. Every Tuesday you will find Alvarado street crowded with locals and visitors checking out all the goods from local farmers and merchants. There are a handful of people selling fresh produce and you will find a lot of organic food too. If you are looking for unique jewelery then this is your place, tribalesque that is or earthy/granola goods. Hippiesque - you know what I'm talking about. If you are hungry this is your place... There are about 10 booths of food, I'm talking BBQ, Asian and even a few Greek. Just lovely. Bring the kids and your friends out for this fun weekly event. Don't forget to hit up the sweets and baked goods alley located alongside the small lane between Rabobank and Luna Blu. Lovely focaccia from Santa Cruz (Beckmann's Bakery) and my all time favorite is the Garlic Chicken Wrap ($5) from Paprika Cafe formerly Taboulis. In town for business, I was excited to find out that this Tuesday afternoon/evening Farmers Market was just a block from the hotel. (Portola Hotel) This is a diverse market with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, ethnic foods, and a number of options for picking up a fresh and delicious dinner for $5 - $10. Really enjoyed this Farmer's Market. We were visiting for the week and put this on our "to-do list" for a few reasons. One, the location is very nice, in downtown Old Monterrey. It's nice to explore off the beaten path (Cannery Row, Fisherman's Wharf) and a Farmer's Market gives you a great sampling of locals and tourists alike. We also wanted to check this out because of its general location and the probability of having lots of great local veggies and fruits. The surroundings of Monterrey, after all, are pretty much all lush and endless fields of berries, leafy greens, artichokes, and more. And of course, the orchards are filled with tree nuts and yummy stone fruit! Last but not least, we read on Yelp about all the great prepared food, which are often one of my favorite parts of a street market! So, first and foremost - see my quick tip - The parking garage about a block from here offers 1 free hour of parking. We were just over an hour and I just had to pay 50cents, so that was awesome. Lots of people seem to know about this, so get there earlier if possible. Second, this Farmer's Market is great! I like that they have a lot of variety in their vendors. There is more than one vendor offering any kind of veggie or fruit. So many markets near San Jose limit the vendors, and try to stem the competition. Here, you can shop around for the best price, or the best quality produce. Last, the prepared food vendors are great! There is a very wide selection. There was a Cuban food food truck, Middle Easter wraps, Southern food, lots of cupcakes, pastries, and cookies, fresh donuts, Brittania Arms doing BBQ, sausage, and more. Overall, a great Tuesday evening market and a great chance to get fresh veggies and fruits for the hotel room or for home, and a great opportunity to be outside, mingle with locals, enjoy Monterrey, and grab a bite on the go. I'm really surprised by the good reviews of this market. Maybe the winter months aren't the best time of year? Or maybe I'm spoiled by the Alamito's Sunday market in LBC? Either way, I was super excited to hear that I was a stones throw away from an upcoming Tuesday night market. Being near "America's salad bowl" (Salinas Valley), I was certain I was going to leave the market envious of all the selection and wishing I had the market near my home. Boy, was I wrong. It's large enough but I am guessing that some of the businesses in the Alvarado street area aren't all that excited about being blocked by vendors. There were large expanses of open space between vendor booths and it seemed that it usually ran the expanse of a storefront. I could be wrong but that was my impression, nonetheless. The vendors were friendly and we did share a pretty good Philly cheese steak and some calamari that was fresh tasting but lacked any exciting crunch or seasoning. Definitely didn't enjoy them that much and I guess I had high hopes considering all the seafood in the area. The produce looked pretty amazing but there were only about 5 total vendors with fruit and veggie selections. The rest were food vendors, ladies selling scarves and silly fish hats and a couple of pastry vendors. The one thing I did notice that was worthy of possibly an additional half star was the large selection of nuts and the reasonable prices. Pistachio's and walnuts were something like $7.99 for 2 lbs. All in all, I don't regret the hour spent but I wouldn't go out of my way to return. Perhaps in the summer months. read more

Such a big selection of vendors and options! One of the bigger FMs I've been to. The vendors I stopped at were all super sweet and chill, no one was trying to force sales on you or samples. The vineggrette vendor was kind and set aside a bottle so I didn't have to carry it while I browsed the rest of the place. The honey girls were amazing and had so many options that all had samples, totally can't go wrong! The fruit I bought was great, perfect for my last few days in town. It's a bit of a big market to let kids run, and there is an active street intersecting the market, so that's not good for little ones. I'd recommend going to the Old Monterey Farmer's Market on Tuesday late afternoon or early evening. Alvarado Street in downtown Monterey is closed down and the street is lined with food purveyors and vendors selling everything from baskets to fresh produce to flowers to honey, nuts, dates and chocolates, preserves, skin care products and candles, herbs and spices, incense, clothing, arts and crafts, snow cones and ice cream, jewelry, seafood, olives. They even have fresh goats milk there. Most days in summer are sunny and bright. The market is full of people, couples walking arm-in-arm oblivious to the world, moms with young kids in tow, there's an international feeling to the diverse crowd. It's festive and fun and romantic walking though Old Monterey in the warm, late afternoon sunshine. You can offer your date all kinds of food and soak in the surroundings, walking and talking, relaxing and taking it all in. It's completely casual and a fun way to spend time getting to know someone who may eventually become your Love Jones.... I stopped by today to check our their Market. The Market is in the center of their downtown. It is full of local folks and tourists from all over the country and the world. You can hear the different languages being spoken and the hustle and bustle of the kids running around. All this in a very quaint, old Spanish type of neighborhood. Seriously legit farmers market with something for everyone. The fruit / veggie vendors present their goods like works of art, stacked meticulously, a rainbow of edibles straight from the dirt. So inspiring! Come hungry because there's a tempting lineup of food carts too: Lebanese, Greek, French, sushi, tacos, cupcakes, mac & cheese, raw juices, bubble tea and much more. It's a vibrant market that seems to be a hit with the locals. Live musicians set up on every corner, rain or shine. Wish they had more tables to sit and savor the sidewalk food. Was here on a Tues night and thought it would be a lot bigger for some reason. I mean, it's bigger than anything close to me in S CA (aside from the Hollywood Farmer's Market, which I love), but I thought it would be huge from the reviews. It's a couple of blocks. Produce looked decent - similar to a lot of other farmer's market - at standard farmer's market prices. They don't have a ton of food booths, though. The one for the rotisserie chicken and potatoes was long, but it moved. Chicken was kind of dry. Not sure what the hype is about it. I did get some delicious corn in a cup (Mexican style) from one booth...my friend got a baked potato from there that was huge and good, too. Got two tiny fish tacos from some seafood booth - no bueno. There's also pretty much no where to sit, so we brought all our food back to our hotel lobby and ate there. read more

Every time I come home to PG I make sure to visit the Monterey Farmer's Market at least once. What a great way to spend a Tuesday evening - strolling Alvarado, enjoying the musicians that set up in several spots and perusing the fresh produce, flowers, jewelry, snacks, scarves, food trucks and baked goods. There is endless variety to this Farmer's Market. Produce has always been fresh and reasonably priced and there are always opportunities to taste. I am always tempted by the flowers. It's not a visit if I don't come away with at least a small jeweled trinket. I've not had the opportunity to try the prepared food from the various vendors with the exception of a chicken from Roti-Roti, but judging by other's reviews, that must be rectified! This is a GREAT farmer's market! So much fresh produce and such great food. This event has become a part of my regular weekly routine. Lots of things have been picked fresh the day-of and there is so much variety. I'm from Orange County, so the farmer's market pales in comparison to this one. I love that you can try samples at almost every stand! Must try: - Gyro - Kettle Corn - Indian wraps - Baklava from Paprika - Sparking Juice stand - Mixed berry bundle for $10! (Blackberries, strawberries and raspberries) I always buy flowers here because you can get fresh bundles for as cheap as $3! I got some beautiful sunflowers here yesterday. Cash only so be prepared. Parking can be a pain, but I usually park near the Bank of America. read more

We came down to Old Monterey for a late lunch/early dinner. I had read about the farmer's market on Tuesdays but I thought it was only opened til the end of October. What a pleasant surprise. We had finished eating about 3ish so we walked the street watching them set up. There was a variety of things people were selling...fresh produce, scarves, hats, Christmas items, beads and baubles. I also noticed all of them had lanterns with them. It darned on me that they are opened until just a wee after it gets dark. I saw some interesting food stalls. Too bad we had already eaten. There was Indian, Mediterranean, BBQ, pastries, cheeses, honey and jams. Too bad we were staying another night in Monterey. One of my absolute favorite things to do on a Tuesday afternoon... This farmer's market is amazing. On days when the belly doesn't need a complete fill, I like to stop in for some delicious varieties of nuts. My favorite are the 1/2 pound bag of ready-to-eat walnuts, and the flavored pistachios; with chile lime being the best!! Down the market further is the freshly fried calamari rings and tentacles. Holy Effing Sheet that's good squid. Squid never fills me uo so when I need to really get down I'll grab a lamb or chicken naan wrap and play gobble the grub as I walk over to the kettle corn boys and get a pretty hefty bag of corn. They used to keep the desserts corralled in the little side street/alley halfway thru the market but now the freshly made doughnut folks have a powdery splash on the main thoroughfare. Either way, if you can get past them and still have a sweet tooth, then its off down sweet street. The cupcake lady is ridiculous. The lemon squares and baklava are not to be missed either. Lets face it, if I had my way, I'd spend about $200 a week on that market but alas, reality beckons and I must limit it to a few items at a time! read more

The farmers were very nice and filled with information. You could tell that they believe in their produce. We even thought of moving there just to get fresh farm produce. This is how farmers markets should be run. It's well organized, has plenty of variety, good quality produce, and (for the most part) friendly folks. Sometimes the produce prices are higher than at the local grocery store, but it's MUCH better quality--get what you pay for. This market has the additional benefit of being located in downtown Monterey, so swinging into a local pub for a drink, or patronizing a local business, or even just seeing the sights is a bonus. read more

I don't know how walking BEHIND the food vendors rather than in front of them makes it any more sanitary, considering it's outside & open to the elements anyways. This is a must-do on Tuesday evenings when the weather is nice. There's always tons of great fruits and vegi's to pick from at very reasonable prices. Plus food carts, I find myself always grabbing dinner to go. Let me recommend the nan wraps for the Indian food place or fresh churros. Mmmmmmmmm There's also people there selling stuff. Most of those tables are filled with crappy swap-meet type stuff, but make sure to keep your eyes open because there are a few with cute jewelery and other handmade goods. It can be tricky to find parking, but there's usually enough people coming and going that you can snag a spot after only doing a couple circles. Sidenote: they don't allow dogs, but I always see people with them anyway. I'm not sure if anybody enforces the signs. read more

The best Farmer's Market i have ever been to. the best produce from all over the area. i would walk away with lots of fresh fruits and veggies and then return the next week for more. you'll find that their items are reasonably priced compared to the grocery store prices. and i walk away feeling good that i supported our local farmers. none of the produce i have purchased is weighed down with heavy pesticides. the local grown flowers are a great deal. i loved having fresh cut florals around the house. and so long as you kept the stems trimmed they would last for about two weeks. one week i picked up a gorgeous woven basket for $20. i bought it for toting my market wares home. this basket has been well loved and it still looks as good as the day i bought it. i'm constantly getting compliments. i have friends and family that wish they had one too. i wish i could have purchased one for each of them. the bakery aisle was another stop along the way, pick up some fresh baked loaves. and a loaf of olallieberry bread for my boyfriend. you would think he would have gotten sick of it. even if you are not planning on buying anything it is still fun to get out of the house, head down for some live entertainment and sample the local wares. great community spirit. read more

This is a really good local market. While not all of the products are locally made, most of them are. We like to come for both produce and dinner, as there is a wide selection of both greengroceries and comestibles. Lots of free samples to be had from many of the food and produce sellers. There are also many vendors selling various arts and/or crafts; my favorite among them is the scarf lady, who sells cashmere scarves for a song. True, the scarves are made in England, not locally, but that's OK. Most vendors are cash only--what did you expect? Some of the food is a wee overpriced, but eating al fresco in the market atmosphere is part of the fun. You'll see hippies, freaks, normals, and military personnel here; people range in age from newborn to elderly. They go year 'round, though there are fewer vendors in the winter-ish months, and they usually close shop when it gets dark. Prices vary from inexpensive to moderate. read more

Love it! Love it! Love it! Had a blast! So much prepared food to sample! Also fresh produce and fresh "fruit from the sea." I could (and did) spend hours walking up and down Alvarado stopping at food stalls and sampling all that was on offer...definitely doing this again. Oh and the churros stole the show for me.
