The layout is designed to accentuate the picturesque lakefront setting. This was one of the first Davis Love III designed courses in the Charlotte area. The tree lined fairways, the terrain, and water make for a challenging game. There is only a small area at the beginning where you are looking at houses- the rest is natural. Playing in the early fall the course was in…read morereasonably good shape overall (the fairways were cut a bit long for my taste), and the greens were immaculate. IMMACULATE. True and challenging. Course offers a nice combination of uphill and downhill, long and short, left and right bending holes. There are some greenside bunkers but for the most part the green complexes are open in front (except for a couple of par 3s that you have to carry all the way to the green). Although the price gap between the riding discount of $25 and whatever walking costs can't be that much, the course is relatively walkable. I'm looking forward to ditching the electronic buggy next time. BTW, please ignore the idiot reviewer "Kevin G." and his BS comments about gunshot wounds and crack houses near the course. You are more likely to get hurt crossing the road while playing than you are from these other things.

The fairway is probably 60-70 feet below you and stretches out towards the tree line. The par 3 2nd comes back a little to your left, and then you see the third hole as it wraps around water just below. Absolutely stunning. It's a tough track and I would say is fun from every set of tees (black, blue, white, gold, and even the red tees). Water comes into play on about a dozen holes. Highlights are the first tee box/first hole (it's a reachable par 5), the third as it wraps around a pond, the second half of the par 5 5th hole, the eighth hole looks like it's on top of the world, the views from the 10th tee box, the thirteenth hole (a brute of a par 5), and some of the best par 4s in Virginia (holes 15, 16, and 18). I stayed in the smaller of the two lodges that overlook the 18th green. We had a suite with a master with a king and another room with two double beds. Lots of space, two bathrooms, a kitchen, and a porch. It was also the cleanest room I may have ever stayed in. Some of the nicest views were from the porch that included the storm that rolled through at night and the fog that followed in the morning. There is only one restaurant on property and the food was excellent. Love that the dessert menu was never fixed. I had an ice cream cookie sandwich that was excellent. The people here truly make this place special. Whoever cleaned our room deserves a raise. Bo (the head pro) and Sherrie in the pro shop are maybe the nicest people I have met playing golf, and that is saying something. The wait staff and grounds crew were all extremely nice as well. I know there is a 5-star resort down the road that I visited for a bit, but I would much rather be here every day of the week. (Not saying I wouldn't turn down a free stay and play at the other place.) Needless to say this is now on my list for places to have a relaxing weekend getaway filled with great golf.

The course is short and fairly open due to the recent mass tree removal but is hilly so it plays tougher than you would think based on yardage. Tee boxes, fairways, and greens were in good condition with the exception of a couple greens. The greens were a little closer to the slow side but not unreasonable. I liked that they had the 100, 150 and 200 yard markers in the fairway as well as on the cart path making it easier to get the approximate yardage from anywhere. Pace of play was decent for the most part but there are a handful of blindshots that you have to check to see if the group in front has moved on. This is a good course if you haven't been out in awhile and want to get some course action swings in over a driving range without being overly challenged.

That, or you need to have confidence in your driver to cut the dog leg off. There are a lot of elevation changes as well. The course is not the most manicured course I've played but the greens were very good except one that looked to be fairly recently redone. ( club house attendant said they had redone all the greens in the last 3 years ). Some of the tee boxes grass was a little long as well. Most of the bunkers were in good shape. Don't let the minor negatives keep you from playing the course though. The club house attendant said the course was purchased from a foreclosure so I assume they are having to bring the course back. They are on the right track. Staff was great and talkative. Price was very reasonable and included cart rental. I will play this course again anytime I am back for work!

This course was beautiful and play was very reasonable priced given the quality of the course. The carts were quiet and comfortable. The holes were well-labeled and the course was easy to follow. The staff was welcoming and kindly directed us to our first hole and cart. I really enjoyed this experience and appreciate Oak Valley for making my first golfing experience really great!
