I finally came this summer, when they were playing Barbie. We purchased tickets earlier in the day and ate dinner next door to make sure we got good seats. That turned out to be unnecessary, but they did mention that some showings had sold out recently. I recommend getting tickets earlier rather than later! You can purchase tickets online or in person. I loved the ambiance in the theater - from the gorgeous velvet curtains to the stars in the ceiling designed by an astronomy professor. So much history has been maintained while adding modern comfort. The popcorn is also tasty and they carry local soda.

A great concession stand that isn't over priced or ridiculous like modern movie theaters (seriously--a bucket of popcorn for $3? A jumbo soda for $2? Insane) and they carry more than just popcorn. Candy, caramel apples, ice cream, milk shakes, a variety of fried foods including funnel cake. The place just smells awesome. Old neon signs adorn the walls as well as photos of classic Hollywood stars. Neato! Each night your entrance fee buys you into a double feature. Usually it's a kid's movie first followed by a grown up feature. This past weekend it was two adult films-- Salt and Grown Ups. You pull your car into the slot and you have the old fashioned speakers hanging next to your car should you choose them. I'm a mosquito magnet so leaving the windows open would just not do so we opted to listen to the radio feed that runs over a local FM station. Right in front of the screen are swings and a few playground pieces for kids to play around in. Some folks choose to sit on blankets outside of their cars. However you feel most comfortable you can go for it at the Cherry Bowl. The show begins after dusk and before the first film they make special occasion announcements and everyone lays down on the horn in congratulations of birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, etc. So cute! Then they play an old cartoon short (e.g. an old Disney Mickey Mouse short) and then the first feature film. Following that is a classic intermission with old "let's all go to the lobby" reels, commercials for mosquito repellant and pickles. Really awesome old timey stuff. Then the second feature beings. We were exhausted and not particularly interested in seeing Grown Ups so we made sure to stick out for the awesome intermission and took off after. If you're up in the Leelanau area I highly recommend this wonderful blast from the past. The films never go over pg-13 so it's usually kid friendly faire and fun for all ages!

They also had a kitchen area in the back. They had a car track and water table. They have a giant playscape with two slides. By the checkin they have a small store area as well. This would be a great place for grandparents to take their kids while parents go shopping at the mall.

The owners are both knowledgeable and will take time to answer any questions you may have. I love the sounds that play as you walk throughout and the different readings you can look at. The gift shop, although not to my taste, has some great and interesting finds you won't see at any old gift shop in ER. I wish there were more Guntzviller's specific items, because I come for the museum and can't afford any of the taxidermy myself (yet).

We cannot wait to do it again on our next Traverse City trip! Viki is super kind, communicative, and attentive which we learned even before the day of the workshop. She and my friend were messaging in the days leading up to the tour to confirm details, accessibility needs, and general preferences from our group. From these conversations, Viki was happy to ensure our session was just what we were looking for to celebrate this big day. Right when we arrived, Viki had smocks/Aprons for us to put on and all the supplies we needed, including the shapes we had chosen online, ready to go on a table for all of us. She started us off with a step-by-step demonstration, before releasing us upon the array of colored paint bottles in the middle of the table. The entire time, Viki was happy to answer our questions and guide us through some more nuanced techniques. For example, someone had a turtle and wanted to do the fins a different combination of colors than the shell which required her to do the fins first and then use a straw to blow on the paint of the shell to move the colors in the directions she wanted (who knew?). It was so much fun! Once we were all satisfied with our masterpieces, Viki had us put them in small pizza boxes to transport them with us. Overall, this was an incredible experience, and we would highly recommend Viki's class for those traveling from near and far.

There was an exterior exhibit along the front of the building, featuring paintings by Debra Howard, and a lovely fairy garden populates the back, which really fits in with the gorgeous natural space. A small red box is also located out front - similar to a Little Free Library, but it's a cute Little Free Art Gallery! Materials were available on the back deck to make your own tiny piece of art to add to the gallery, and then you were welcome to take a piece you liked. We really enjoyed the extra touches of tiny people checking out the display. Inside is a small gallery space, which was showing a Members Create exhibit. It was a nice opportunity to see a variety of art - painting, photos, prints, mixed media, found art, and more. Staff was friendly and welcoming!
