The White Bakery is the best American-style retro breakfast place in town…read more It is also the worst. It is the only one. Which is already an improvement over not having any at all. The three Italian reviews are glowing. I'm only giving it three stars, but that is only because I think they are capable of improving. This sort of dining experience is what many Italian tourists to the US enjoy most and the nostalgia is evident. I miss it too. What they do right? The decor and style are stellar, kudos to the interior decorator and those who made the final decisions. The wait staff are also very helpful and kind - could be better but they are on an upward curve. There was a bit of confusion as to who ordered what, but they lost no time in correcting the error and making us feel wanted. The apple pie is stellar, as are the hamburgers (some of the best in town). Saturday and Sunday brunch are a bit rigid in the offering, just 8 fixed menus plus desserts, but I can understand the organization aspect. Low points? Three euros for a beautiful and decent doughnut is a bit steep for an American, used to looking at is as a great but low on the ladder breakfast food. Also, the pancakes were pre-made and re-heated - a definite no-no which makes me never want to try the french toast. And the milkshake was (and I wonder what the Italians who gave this high marks were comparing it to) horrible. Not bad as in taste, but it was obvious that ice cream had nothing to do with the production process. Where they trying to imitate a Starbucks frappucino? Despite these major no-noes, I will be going back for the American coffee, ambiance, apple pie and the burgers.

OK. Perhaps I'm being a little "cheap" with the two stars. But even if it were an option, 2.5 would…read morebe the best I could do. Now, my cheeseburger was quite decent by Italian standards (thin, unseasoned patties, loads of ketchup and mayo). As was the husband's plate-sized Maxi Cheeseburger (220g of "authentic" American cuisine). Our server was polite, the canned coke was cold, and the glass brought with it already had ice in it (shock!). We were offered espresso on the house after settling the tab, and while it wasn't the best, the gesture was appreciated. Everything else was a bit downhill. First, there's the location. Vertigo's located on the first floor of Centro Commerciale Megalò. As such, the atmosphere's a bit hectic, even inside the restaurant. The decor is... well, honestly it's awful. 'Spruced' up since this photo was taken Vertigo is now surrounded by a prop castle wall, and loads of fake ivy. Truly, it's like you've entered the worst renaissance festival anywhere. Ever. The interior is slightly less offensive. The largest wall showcases a mural that was inspired it would seem, by a 1940's edition of The Brother's Grimm. I think is supposed to portray the Irish countryside. But really it's just creepy. The interior does not have many tables and the three largest booths are against the wall, staring directly at the back of the television screen. Our booth was sticky from lack of a proper wipe-down between customers. As mentioned the server was polite, and our food arrived promptly enough. That is except for the chips. Those arrived (slightly undercooked) when we'd almost finished our burgers. The menu is simple and unimaginative. Completely standard 'pub grub' for around these parts. Burgers and hot dogs, a large selection of primi (mostly basic pasta dishes). It could literally be the exact menu for about 50 other places in the region. The bar is the nicest feature of Vertigo. The bar top's a bit crowded with coffee paraphernalia, making it an awkward place to enjoy a pint, though obviously it's perfect to take a coffee. If that's what you're into- in an Irish pub. Sadly the bar is completely wasted, since the portion dedicated to draught beverages TOTALLY LACKS a single offering from the Emerald Isle. None. Not one. Not even a British lager or a French stout or SOMETHING to try and make up for it. It's the same, standard stuff you find on tap EVERYWHERE around here. We paid EUR20 for two adequate cheeseburgers (true, one WAS the size of a Frisbee), a small side of chips, a can of coke and a small beer. It was a ripoff. The only thing Irish about Vertigo is that it shares its name with a song by U2.
