I also spotted some authentic Victorian jet jewelry from the 1860s (Queen Victoria made it famous this stone famous in her mourning for Albert, and Ken told us the history of his elder brother too!) Between me and the fella running Brooks, that makes one of us. Stopping into the crammed, musty shop I was interested in finding out about an imposing black lacquer jewellery box in the window. The owner seemed less interested in greeting me than roaring down the phone to a potential customer. Once he was finally willing to receive audiences, I asked where the box had come from (was it Korean, Chinese, Japanese?) I was only told it had come from a private vendor. That's all. Judging from the mix of real antiques and gussied-up (or is that down?) tin prints and novelty plaques, I wasn't ready for the price tag hanging off the box: €395 Yikes. Between the cost and the dealer, I couldn't leave fast enough. After a quick look online, I found a possible reason why the answers weren't forthcoming: that jewelry box retails for as little as $30 plus shipping. One more time: Yikes.

There is a bit of everything here from modern fishing rods to Georgian furniture. The overall feeling is of a shop that has been there for so long that it has sort of collected or inherited its stock and perhaps the owner just opens the place up every day because that's what he has done for the last 40 years....not so though! What? Really? I have to pay to come in your shop? And if I don't find anything you keep my money? I think I'll just wait for my bus quietly now. Thankfully, the notice is no more and you are free to browse without being hit up for cash. This is a good thing, as I love car boot sales, even more so when they are in shop form, and this place always has some quirky, interesting stuff packed into its shelves. Case in point: the skeleton in the picture. Is any home complete without one? Other items that you can buy include art deco teapots, squeeze boxes, Huzzar jackets and ship's steering wheels.

I did spend a happy hour- actually over an hour- having a look around the shop and found many cute trinkets and some quality furniture. And best of all, I was left alone! Nobody tried to make me buy things or offer to show me some special pieces or anything of that sort- I do like that in a shop! Sadly most of the things are too dear for a poor student like me, but you never know next time I might get lucky.

This is an amazing jewellery store…read more I never really noticed it anytime I walked by the shop but I kept seeing the name 'rhinestones' popping up in magazines and seeing some beautiful pieces featured in various shoots so when I realised it was THAT subtle little shop, I went over to have a gander. Now, every time I pass I have a little window shop. The pieces are all gorgeous and unique in their own way. They're antique, so I love that they each have their own history and their own story. Expect to find antique brooches, pearl necklaces and kitsch diamond earrings. Real statement pieces.

If I did, then I'd have an excuse to come back to Model Shop at least a few times for the craic; the shop owner is a warm, friendly sort who really enjoys his work. In the tightly packed but neat shop he enthusiastically sells, cajoles and demos all the goods on sale. I get the feeling that he's hand picked most of the stock in here, a great thing to think given the high quality of the models and accessories on the shelves. Perhaps as a concession to those shoppers not passionate about car bodies and propeller blades, there is a small corner dedicated to doll housery (though The Doll Shop on George's street seems to have that covered).
