We arrived at the meeting location at 8 PM as instructed, where Doctor Professor Hannibal Merripen (or "Doc") introduced himself and learned all our names. Doc was just the perfect mix of dry humor and local knowledge. He also had impeccable comedic timing. He showed us his case of portions and powders, and then handed out our ghost detecting devices, one per group. For the next 2 1/2 hours, we walked through the streets of Mount Dora (which one longer stop in the lobby of the Lakefront Hotel), learning some of the history of the town, as well as stories of residents and visitors who departed this earth a bit too soon, but still lingered in shops, hotels, or streets. Mount Dora is an open container town, so cocktails in plastic cups were permitted. Wear comfy shoes for the hills, and bug spray is recommended (it was warm but pleasant, but we experienced some little stinging midges - seasonal but not super fun.) Thank you for the best night! Even our 14 year loved it and Doc kept him engaged (even commenting that if the teenager took out his AirPods right away so he knew he was doing a good job). Also check out the Paranormal Experience in the historic Donnelly House. It promises to be a combination of a ghost tour and an escape room. Spooky!

Doc was the absolute best, loved hearing the stories of all who died in the little town. Stay at the lakeside inn, it's beautiful and nostalgic. Half the stories come from this hotel alone. Stepping into the Mount Dora Firehouse & Jail Museum feels like stepping back in time--and what an incredible trip it is! This little museum is bursting with charm, local history, and personality. Tucked away in a quiet corner of town, it's one of those hidden gems that you almost don't want to tell anyone about--but it's just too good to keep a secret. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with warmth and enthusiasm. The volunteer guide was an absolute treasure, full of fascinating stories and local lore. You could tell this place is run with heart and passion. They brought history to life--whether we were peeking into the old jail cells or checking out the vintage fire equipment (some of it dating back over 100 years!). Every nook is packed with Mount Dora's rich past--from the early days of the town's fire department to what it was like spending a night in the town jail (hint: not exactly luxury). It's immersive, quirky, and surprisingly educational in the best way. You don't need to be a history buff to enjoy it--this place makes learning fun and personal. Bonus points: it's super affordable, family-friendly, and a quick walk from all the cute downtown shops and cafés. If you're visiting Mount Dora, do not skip this museum. It's the kind of place that makes you fall in love with small towns all over again. 10/10 would "get arrested" again!

How did I not write a review about the Polar Express sooner!?! I did not have high hopes for this…read moreexperience, especially considering how expensive I thought it was, but I had a blast and it was definitely worth the price! I bought this as a Christmas present for my 4 year old niece and a friend of mine brought her 2 daughters ages 5 and 7. They could not wait to go to the Polar Express! I think it was super cute that they encourage the kids to ride in their pajamas and that's exactly what our girls did. This would have been a 5 star experience except for 2 things. The first is the location where we start. It was a little hard to find at first, because the sign was really small, I don't know, but I was surprised that check-in was in a rented space in an old shopping center. I guess for me, some of the magi was lost. Inside was very organized. Once you went in, it was decorated really nice and didn't look like it had been a vacant space just weeks ago. The employees were friendly and guided us through the lines with ease. You check-in and get your golden ticket. Next was a line to take a photo and purchase it later if you wanted. After that, was the merchandise section of the room. Once you bypassed that, you could be seated for a pre-show. They did have an area to perchance beverages and snacks as well. The bathrooms were HORRIBLE. Some of the worse I've ever seen! It was time to trek our way though the packed shopping center parking lot to board our trains. The trains were decorated beautifully and the show on board was awesome. My friend and I didn't expect to like it as much as we did, and the girls had the best time ever. The actors were great, the pace was perfect, and the hot cocoa and cookies were delicious. The kids were so involved, they didn't notice that when we made it to the "North Pole," you could look out the window and see a pub and medical clinic , however, most of us adults on board noticed. Although we all had a great time, again, there were several times were the magic was lost. Overall, the girls had the times of their lives. They were the perfect age to enjoy it. We are going to make it a tradition moving forward. 1.Ride the train at night. 2.I think that kids younger than 4 and older than 10 may not enjoy it as much. 3. The Coach tickets were plenty for us all. No need to upgrade to the more expensive seating options.
