Throughout my life, I was prone to experiencing migraines in environments of stress or confrontation. The episodes ranged from strong headaches to intense migraines, sensitivity to light and nausea. I assumed this would continue to be my pattern, and since they only occurred approximately once per month, I figured I could live with them. On a weekend getaway with friends from college, I woke up with a first time, scariest instance EVER of Bell's Palsy. Lucky for me I was with two doctors who checked me out and immediately prescribed steroids. Upon returning home to Philadelphia, I went to my primary physician, a massage therapist, and had numerous bouts of fear and depression from this facial palsy. My primacy care physician suggested acupuncture. I was skeptical to say the least and saw it as merely a novelty, something to help convince myself I was doing something, ANYthing to heal faster. I did some research and went for location and credentialing to find an acupuncturist. I took a chance and went to see Owen McPeake, not your typical Asian acupuncturist name, right? Definitely not, but let me give it a try. Owen was phenomenal. he was caring, inquisitive, thoughtful, and conscientious of the extreme roller coaster of emotions I was riding. We took a drastic, intense acupuncture route and it was just that, drastic AND intense! After the first session I wasn't convinced. After the 2nd session, I was hooked, and Owen continued to be fantastic, caring, and really engaged. After the third session, my palsy had all but cleared up. After just 4 sessions I was back to 85% facial control and after another two weeks had fully recovered. I had tried a few options throughout my ordeal, with the help and kindness from Owen, his acupuncture/cupping tactics, and herbal prescriptions, I have fully recovered and truly thank Owen for his experience, time, and dedication to me, as his patient, to truly help me recover from this ordeal. This is my very first Yelp review, and it's certainly fitting to be writing about Owen. I came to Owen with some pretty severe imbalances, both physical and mental. I began to see immediate changes following our first session, and after only two months I feel like a new person. Owen is extremely knowledgable about Chinese medicine, a field in which I had very little experience. He explained the treatments to me clearly, and recommended an herbal formula in conjunction with the acupuncture. I was pleasantly surprised when he told me that even though the formula came from an outside pharmacy, he only charged me face-value. What's more is that he didn't try to see me for extraneous sessions, as some practitioners may do to try and get the most profit out of each patient. I have had acupuncture in Taiwan, China and the USA, and I think Owen is the best acupuncturist I have ever been to. He is very professional, very kind, and listens to his patients, asking questions to understand the root of one's problems. This is my first yelp review ever. Earlier this winter I got a terrible sore throat that got worse and worse. My throat was in danger of swelling shut and I had to keep my head at a certain angle to breathe. I didn't feel I was capable of leaving my bed. I called Owen and he asked me a number of detailed questions about how I felt and sent a prescription for an herbal remedy to an alternative healing center. I dragged myself out of bed to go pick it up thinking that it was all hocus pocus. It wasn't. Within a few hours I began feeling better, and in two days I was at 100%. I was astonished at how well the herbal tincture worked, it was as fast acting and comprehensive as any medicine I've ever taken, and it did not come with any of the negative side-effects of antibiotics. My husband has yearly colds that always seem to settle into his lungs. His doctor prescribed prednisone. Since I had very negative experience with prednisone, I suggested he try Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs instead. Owen gave him an Acupuncture treatment and prescribed the herbs. After dealing with my lower back pain and sciatica pain for over 2 months, with no help from the chiropractor, I decided I would try acupuncture. Owen was very welcoming from the start. We sat together reviewing my medical history as well as my back pain to try an narrow down the causes. I received a total of 3 treatments.
