During a two night stay in Oslo, we hit this place both nights! Great selection of craft beers in a wonderful gastropub atmosphere. We ate here just one of the nights, but drank here BOTH nights! On our first night in Oslo (and Norway), I was uncertain as to whether I would like the beer selections available, as everywhere has their own definition as to what is good beer and what is bad beer. Luckily, I found out through the course of my week in Norway, we have comparable definitions of good beer, particularly when one delves into the craft beer arena. Over the course of two evenings, my friends and I sampled a variety of exceptionally tasty beers from Nøgne Ø and Haandbryggeriet. We held out on trying the Ægir Bryggeri as we were off to Flam after Oslo and the brewpub is located there. The tricky part with those two brewers is that a lot of the selections are higher test beers (7%+ alcohol), so word to the wise - just double check the menu (it's listed) before ordering - depending on how late you want to stay out. We arrived at a later hour for a meal, as we were savoring the Scandinavian summer where it stays light for a much longer period of time as compared to the United States. As a result, we barely made the kitchen's closing time. I want to say it was around 9:30 (but I could be wrong). The kitchen did accomodate our request to dine, which was fantastic. Lesson learned on the first day in Norway, eat well before the sun goes down. There are large booths and long tables here, so it seems like a great place for a large group of people. This was a great neighborhood to hang out in, and it was not too far from our hotel. Additionally, it came recommended via our trusty Lonely Planet guide book, so kudos to them for including this joint in their list of places to check out! Delicious Norwegian food in Oslo! *** Locals Right by the Oslo Train and Bus Terminal, good for a meal and drinks! *** Travelers Their menu is pretty limited, but we got the meat and fish of the day. This restaurant has been at this location in one form or another for the past 100 years. I find its current version to be SUPER DUPER. Olympen serves traditional Norwegian fare. So there's regular seafood items on the menu plus some interesting items like whale steak and horse sirloin. Yes, horse sirloin. Us Americans are not able to order that in the states so being the adventuresome person I am that's what I ordered. It ended up being great. Sure, I felt a little bad about eating it but the waiter asked me a good question. He asked me where do horses go when they die in the states? He had a point. I guess if they're going to die, they might as well not go to waste? I think the whole glue factory thing is a myth. And no, I didn't find any marks on my meat where the jockey whipped the horse ;-) The interior of Olympen is very cool. It reminded me of a traditional restaurant you might find in Paris France. It's classy yet casual. They have a lot of comfy booths, both in the front of the restaurant and way in the back of the restaurant. The walls are covered in huge reproduction paintings. I loved the whole vibe of the place. The fact that the food and the servers were great too made for a terrific evening. One of the best restaurants in Oslo. First of all, the interior is super cool! This place used to be an old theater and it kept it's charm. Big long burgundy drapes, gigantic chandeliers, dark wood and big paintings. Second, staff is great with much knowledge. You can tell they have been around for a while:) Third, the food is delicious and the portions are rather large. The food is tasty and beautifully presented. A bit pricy, but there is a prix-fixe option that changes every month, if you are interested in saving a little money (or finding a place with a continually-evolving menu). Staff is very helpful and patient, which i was grateful for, as I'm still getting the hang of how restaurant bills and tipping work here in Norway. They also have a selection of beer available on tap, some of which are made by the restaurant's own brewery. If you're not sure what to order, your server can help you out with a recommendation. To be clear: the food was good. I just felt like we were misled by the characterization of this place as a "neighborhood" "gastropub". I'm not sure it was either of those things. Steak frites were good. Steak tartare was tasty if a bit harmless. Whale salad was intriguing. (Saving the question "what kind of whale is 'våge hval'?" for the bars tonight.) From the menu/prices/decor, this felt like a semi-splurge-y date spot - fine, I can call an audible - but the service didn't match up. Not enough utensils/dishware for the table, the wrong beers brought out, soapy glasses...I would've been embarrassed if I were trying to impress someone. If you're in town visiting (assuming you are, since you're reading this in English), then now you know. Not a laid back neighborhood beer spot. Try Oslomekaniskeverksted instead for that. read more

When in Oslo never pass up the chance to eat at this place. One of few restaurants around which serve a traditional Norwegian meal. Located in the diverse Greenland district, aka the immigrant part of the city, Olympen serves a cuisine as interesting as some of the other ethnic restaurants in the area. The exterior is a bit lacking but once you step through the door, the inside is beautiful. Be careful not to walk by too quickly because you might miss the building. The inside is dark wood and glass chandeliers as far as the eyes can see. The walls have giant paintings and give you something to look at while enjoying your food. During Christmas time traditional dishes such as rakfisk, pinnekjøtt, and lutefisk are available to order for those who like to venture to the more traditional side of norsk cuisine. I ordered the pinnekjøtt and they brought out two servings. Is there such a thing as too much good food? The portions are enough to share (if you dare go against the grain) and the price is pretty spot on. The drink list was pretty good and had a variety of brews from all over the world. The staff is very attentive and welcoming. If you find yourself in the area, don't pass this place up. read more

Amazing venue. Viking Beer Hall, but with some upgrades. The beer ordered by a friend was Trappistes Rochefort and it was the best beer I have had all year, in a cool big bottle. We had set menu - conference dinner - and the mackerel was good. Dessert okay, starter okay. I would go back for more food choices. But I would go back! Very nice staff, they let us just sit and talk after we were done drinking. read more

So much history here and it's worth the visit. Been there many times. Charming decor that has been restored and kept as similar to the original as possible. Decent beer and good food. OK, if I was reviewing this restaurant just on the arctic char I ordered, it would get 5 stars. This fish, closely related to the salmon, was truly amazing...probably the best I have ever had....cooked perfectly....and not sauced up to hide the flavor. And fresh..fresh fresh...I could go on and on. We had just finished a cruise to the fjords and ship food that was largely depressing...It was such a treat to come to this beautiful high ceilinged place that did not have Nordic prices....Anyway, the hake was a little salty...but the caviar was excellent and the bread was delicious. This should really be 4 1/2 stars. It was a very enjoyable meal and I am a tough critic. read more

Our friends took us out the first night in Oslo. This was a great welcome! The restaurant has history, and you can see the restauration that was done on the murals. I had the mackerel, which was excellent. They accommodated my gluten allergy as well. read more
