I had a very concerning experience with Coach Vargas at Olympian Martial Arts. During a discussion about the liability waiver he forced us to sign almost 8 months late, I asked if the document could include mutual indemnification language and clarification under California law before signing it. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Instead of addressing the question professionally, Coach Vargas became hostile and abruptly told me "f*** you" and called me a "p***y" multiple times in front of my minor son.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The interaction happened outside the business and escalated quickly, which was extremely uncomfortable. No parent or child should have to witness that kind of behavior from someone responsible for teaching children.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I was also told last Fall that my 13-year-old would have to join the adult class or be dropped from the program. That policy was not explained beforehand and did not seem appropriate for a minor. Because of this experience, I cannot recommend this gym to other families. Professional martial arts instruction should include discipline, respect, and emotional control--especially when working with kids. Unfortunately, that was not what we experienced. Then tonight I posted on my story minding my own business when they messaged me again being hella disrespectful for no reason!! I was very excited for my son to start learning bjj and kickboxing. I have always seen martial arts as a great way to teach our children self-discipline, and positive mental attitude (especially Jiu-jitsu). I decided to give this place a chance based on their location and the owner was offering a discount on uniforms and gear. I was a bit hesitant based on some negative comments other members of the community had told me about the owner, but I believe people deserve a second chance, so I agree to have my son train with Christian. From the start we had issues with his payment process (not easy at all). Once we set up his complicated way of paying, I was not charged the correct amount. I had to make additional arrangements to pay the rest of my son's tuition. As a single parent, I'm on a tight budget, so not being invoiced properly and having to reach to him to point out accounting errors was very inconvenient for me. The owner also has poor communication skills. I found myself always having to ask via text if the kids were having class or not, due to holidays and breaks. This was another huge inconvenience as I need to coordinate transportation for my son when I'm at work.Once my son started training the lack of communication by the owner continued. There was an incident in one of the classes "where things got a bit heated" between my son and another child. The coach/owner did not notify me of this incident, and it wasn't until I let him know it would be my son's last month there, then he decided to bring up the incident. His excuse was that he hardly ever saw me after class, which was false because I picked up my son 3 of the 5 days and my mother would take him the other 2 days. I understand this is a contact sport, so I get "things can get heated", but his lack of communication was very unprofessional. He had no problem texting me 4 months later to tell me he forgot to include the charge for the uniform when he invoiced me, but a "heated altercation" that involved my son, slipped his mind? I let Christian know it's not okay for him to bring up charges 4 months after, as soon as I decided to cancel. He tried to convince me to keep my child training with him by saying he would waive the fee, which was his mistake to begin with. I declined his offer and Christian proceeded to tell me how ungrateful I was and that he did me a favor offering so many discounts. His harassment didn't stop there. I told him I would have hoped as a coach that he could have been a mentor to my son since my son's father is on active duty and is currently stationed out in the east coast. Per the screenshots I attached you can see that he said that's not his job....his job is to teach my son how to "fight, that's it". Cleary this individual has no empathy for military families and doesn't understand the impact a coach figure has on a child. I was disappointed as these are not the positive qualities I expect from a Jiu Jitsu coach. Jiu-jitsu is an amazing sport that teaches respect, integrity and physical and emotional strength, that requires a coach that sees him/herself as a mentor and not just someone that teaches how to fight. I do not recommend this place. The owner lacks the integrity needed for this sport and is a horrible role model for children. read more

As a student of Coach Vargas, in both the adult kick boxing and jiu jitsu, what really appeals to my method of learning is the extreme emphasis on technique. The curriculum that he provides to us is always fresh, and will always improve your skill whether you're beginner, intermediate, or an amateur fighter. There is something to be learned by any level of martial artist at this academy. Whether it be in kick boxing or in jiu jitsu; should there ever a particular issue with your mechanics or a certain combination or submission that peaks your interest - Coach Vargas will integrate it with his curriculum. In addition to the excellent experiences here that I have as a student, the ambiance of the team itself is also something that keeps me coming back. Anyone who joins the team is able to fit right in and should feel comfortable training here. I am not sure what the best term for it is, but what comes to mind is "martial arts etiquette" and Coach Vargas teaches us all how to be the best and most effective training partners. I've got nothing but great things to say about this academy and its coach who goes above and beyond for both the children and adults. I stumbled upon his gym after walking past it after my daughter's ballet class. With me coming from another gym, I took my daughter in to begin training in both BJJ and Muay Thai. Having to sit and speculate the teachings of this well experienced coach, for about 5 days during the children's classes, I decided to sign up myself. Christian not only offers the teachings of mixed martial arts, he also enlightens kids on life lessons. Respect, dignity, honor, discipline and integrity being a few. Any child who chooses to stay, or leave the academy, will leave with some sort of lesson that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. He knows each and every child's limitations, and pushes them everyday while instilling confidence into each kid. I wouldn't bring my child anywhere else. read more
