My children had cultivated a close-knit community at Lincoln JAA and appreciated the overall positive atmosphere. They held high expectations that the Roseville campus would offer a similar environment; however, we were disappointed following our interaction with Mr. Norman Gonzales, the Secondary Principal of JAA, and Mr. Smith. The initial reception was anything but welcoming. The conversation quickly shifted to one of my daughter's academic performances, highlighting her struggles in a manner that rendered her feelings of inadequacy and anxiety regarding credit recovery for graduation. While I acknowledge the importance of direct communication, it is essential to remember that we are addressing a teenager, not an adult. My child has faced significant self-esteem and confidence challenges stemming from prior experiences of bullying, which is precisely why we sought the supportive environment at JAA. Mr. Gonzales's demeanor, which I suspect may be influenced by his extensive background in government, appeared to lack compassion. He was cold and lacked any empathy. Someone like this should not be in education or around children. It doesn't surprise me that he was on the JAA board; the same board that failed to adequately inform parents about the closure of the high school division at JAA Lincoln. His comments, particularly regarding my daughter's appearance and the manner in which he addressed her, were inappropriate and made her cry during the orientation. The atmosphere felt more like an interrogation than a welcoming introduction, and his behavior was entirely uncalled for. He was speaking to us like we were beneath him. Mr. Smith remained largely silent throughout the meeting, which I interpret as a precautionary measure to avoid incurring Mr. Gonzales's disapproval. I left the meeting astonished that an educator would confront and demean a child in such a manner. It appears they reviewed her transcripts, recognized her IEP status, and opted to distance themselves by deterring her from attending. Also, he wanted to make it very clear that they do not have services for emotional needs and that they do have a bullying issue. Rather than conveying a message that they wished to welcome her back, it seemed they were discouraging our continued engagement with JAA. I am deeply unsettled by the handling of this situation and am considering elevating this matter to the board, as I believe this experience was both inappropriate and unacceptable. If they were attempting to discourage, they certainly won. I will never have my kids attend another John Adams Academy.

So far I am on my 3rd kid going to RHS and over the past 8+ years of attending numerous events I…read morehave really no complaints. I think this overall school gets a bad wrap because of its location and age, but for me that character is what makes it unique. I honestly feel that this school is very kid/family oriented and I know several parents from other schools feel the same way. Just as an example sporting events and pretty much all but especially football and basketball you will find pretty much a packed house. In a lot of cases their kids don't even play the sport, but it's much more about supporting the event or a friend/family playing. I know this happens at other schools as well but nothing that I have felt. Another example is how many people travel all over the surrounding areas to attend these same sporting events. I have been at an away game where RHS has more people attending than the opponent. That to me shows awesome school spirit, support and Tiger Pride! Everyone always asks me about this school and what it's like and again because of its wrap. I always have the same answer. It's what you put into it. All of my kids have excelled from here with one just graduating Sac State and another still attending. All of them have gotten involved in various activities like soccer, cheer, Avid and yearbook. This is the key to me to your success not only here but in life. You have to add value and not just be a taker. At some point when you just take eventually the tank runs out and you blame other things or circumstances and not the person in the mirror. Last point...have every single teacher been 100% and do I agree with everything about their teaching methods? No and again this is also a part of life. You are not going to see eye to eye with everyone, but overall for the most part everyone working here is committed to your kids and the school counselors are terrific. So I can say for my kids and myself "Once a Tiger always a Tiger"....
