By and by this bar became the restaurant you see today. I'm not sure how long it has been a Mexican restaurant but I ate there 10 to 15 years ago and to my recollection, for it's geopolitical location, their Mexican wasn't bad. Definitely worth another shot. Upon arrival I noticed the building is showing it's age. I wouldn't consider it a dump by any means. Just saying "It ain't new". I entered through the restaurant and just inside is a "greeting area" where an employee shows you to your seat. At the time, this area was unattended. In my estimation the restaurant area could probably seat 60 guests. While waiting I noticed around 20 or so patrons already seated. My wait was probably 3 minutes. Since I was dining alone, I decided to forgo the restaurant and eat at the bar area. Still not seeing any staff I made my way to the unmarked bar area where I was met by an employee who told me the bar was closed. I was, however led to my seat, in the restaurant. While seated I noticed a young waitress serving the other diners. Eventually she made her way to my table. I ordered the chorizo cheese dip, enchiladas rancheros, and a "regular" Margarita, on the rocks with salt. In a few minutes she brought me my (included) chips and my Margarita however I didn't get my salsa. My chips were what I'd describe as probably fried at a lower than optimum temperature and for too long. They weren't burnt but not good. I'd describe the margarita as lacking the ubiquitous citrusy flavor with a distinct smoky taste. Either this was the cheapest tequila made in New York City or just the wrong one. Nonetheless, without a doubt, the worst margarita I've ever had. While getting up to use the restroom I noticed a young man with a tray full of small bowls and several containers of salsa and thought to myself that when I get back I'll have my salsa. The restroom was clean but dated. Passable with a C+ grade. Returning to my seat I concluded that my early salsa theory was only 1/2 right. I was given a bowl and no salsa? About 10 minutes the same young man came to my table. Now I assumed it was to bring me my missing salsa. Wrong again, he told me that the restaurant was out of chorizo. (Of course they were) I canceled that item and requested my salsa. I finished my margarita (at this point for medicinal purposes) and the waitress returned with my long awaited salsa. I ordered a mango margarita. How could I go wrong? Let's find out! The salsa, texturally was fine. A little spicy hot but lacked the Cilantro like flavors. More like puréed tomatoes with hot sauce. My main dish arrived. Two enchiladas stuffed with cheese covered in sauce, cheese on the outside with ground beef piled atop. Lettuce, sour cream, and other toppings in a separate bowl. I added the veggies to my plate and dug in. My first reaction: Wow! SALT! I looked at my now empty Margarita glass and silently hoped that my mango Margarita gets here soon. Being a fan of cheese, I never thought that I would say that something had too much cheese, however this dish did. Either this was the cheapest cheese you could find or it was simply the wrong one to use. The entire dish simply lacked flavor, except for the salt. After 20 minutes or so and after I ate all I was going to eat, my waitress arrived with my bill and my margarita. I respectfully declined the drink. When asked how my meal was I explained to her that she was clearly busting her butt to serve some (now 30 or so) people and I could see she was doing her best however the food was bad. She did offer to let me speak to her manager and make things right. I declined. I didn't think I'd make any difference. I paid my bill and left her a fair tip (based on her performance and not the cook's). In closing I'd say this place was under staffed. Some staff was under qualified.
