My kids have grown in so many ways by being a part of this gym and the life lessons and skills they learn on and off the mat here will forever be a part of them. The kids program is hands down the best in the city. We have been a part of two other gyms before and there is no comparison to community, care and students here at 10th planet. Coach Morgan and his team of coaches run a world class kids program that is not only technical but fun. The mix of drills, skills training and sparring with a mix of games in between keeps the kids engaged and happy. The community of parents and kids is solid gold. The caliber of kids that come here bring a sense of skill, passion, and it's like a small family. The engagement from the adults who train here as well as the owners and coaches creates such a family atmosphere. The head coach of the kids program Coach Morgan brings such a high level of jujitsu but most of all really cares for the students and families as if they were his own. The level of patience and care from the coaching team is unmatched. They have Ninja nights where they run games, mini competition brackets, movies, pizza and more games is an absolute blast for the kids but also provides parents a night off. It builds comradery among the kids and allows them to play with each other outside of the gym setting. The gym, the staff, the quality of training and the members make this a truly special place.

Coach Bryan has been extremely respectful, welcoming and focused on individual needs of his students...within reason. His drills are always followed by motivation and application. When running drills he walks the room to ensure every student is able to perform the technique to the best of their experience and fitness level. If needed runs the drill with you personally. He expects you to put in the work and is not afraid to be frank when you are not mindful. This is of great importance as you are paying for his service as are others around you. Why waste your money and other's time? His gym is always spotless and never odorous... I have a bit of OCD so that is a great compliment. He is strict on mat cleanliness. He took me in old, bad vision and poor physical condition and is keeping me motivated, healthy and happy... my doctor loves him for that as does my wife. I always look forward to class and never regret any money spent ... even on a fixed budget totally worth it. Thanks Coach Brayn for being there.

One of the main reasons I chose an all-women's gym was the sense of privacy, exclusivity, and safety that comes with knowing the space is specifically designed for women. Recently, the gym hired a male massage therapist, and the massage room is located within the same area as the gym. For me, that fundamentally changed the environment. It defeats much of the purpose of paying the premium price for an all-women's facility if men are now regularly present in areas where women are working out and receiving services. The gym has also opened a café that leads directly into the gym. Since the café is open to the public, it has brought people into the space who otherwise would not have access to the gym. I've noticed men lingering around the café, which made me increasingly uncomfortable. Unfortunately, the coffee hasn't exactly been good enough to make that tradeoff worthwhile. At this point, I have to question whether the owner is more interested in taking women's money than protecting women's safety and preserving the environment that made this gym worth the premium membership price in the first place. That may not be the owner's intention, but that is unfortunately how these changes have made me feel as a member. I understand that a business can evolve and expand its offerings, but if the gym is moving toward a more co-ed experience, I think that should be communicated transparently. The value proposition of an all-women's gym is very different from that of a traditional gym. If the exclusivity and privacy are being diluted, members deserve to know that before paying the premium price. I really enjoyed working with the trainers here, and I would still recommend connecting with some of the personal trainers if you can find a way to work with them independently. There are genuinely great people here. Ultimately, I left because the gym no longer felt like the all-women's space I originally signed up for. I hope the owner seriously considers whether these changes are consistent with the reason women chose this gym in the first place. I also anticipate that the owner's response to this review may emphasize the gym's commitment to women's safety and explain why these changes are supposedly consistent with that mission. I would encourage prospective and current members to look beyond the polished response and consider the actual changes taking place. For me, the issue is not what the stated mission is; it is whether the experience and policies in practice continue to reflect that mission. Unfortunately, my experience has led me to conclude that they no longer do.

The gym itself is in what feels like a basement. It is small and cramped. There were only three of us in there at the time but I couldn't imagine it on a busy day. I signed up for a free week trial membership. Which is a lovely perk to offer potential new clients. Upon arriving I was given a tour by the person at the front desk. She made sure that before she took me downstairs she found someone to cover her at the front desk. About half way through the tour a woman, I'm assuming manager, came over to us holding a laundry basket. Before saying hi or introducing herself she basically scolded the woman giving me the tour saying "who is watching the front desk if you're down here? I'll finish the tour and you can go back upstairs". At that point this manager woman put on a big fake smile and introduced herself to me and then finished the tour. This interaction alone immediately told me this was not the gym for me. It may be a women's only gym but it didn't provide the feeling of women supporting women. The gym itself is honestly, depressing. No windows. No softness. It's a basement with workout equipment. I chose not to return for remainder of the free trial and certainly wouldn't spend $75 a month to go there.

I have taken Kempo Karate, Kung-Fu at a couple of different places and Chinese San Shou kickboxing. I started at PTB thinking I knew a thing or two but quickly found out that despite a black-belt in karate and about 8 combined years of training, I have no idea how to fight. Other schools, even the kickboxing school I went to previously, are so nervous about students engaging each other one-on-one that they very rarely allow it. As a consequence you never learn to defend and counter when face-to-face with a real person. At Portland Thai Boxing I have only spent time learning skills that are applicable in a real fight situation. How to punch and kick in combination, how to adjust distance and timing and most valuable of all, how to see, read and react to an opponent. It sounds basic, like the kind of thing you'd expect to learn at any martial arts school, but in my experience it is not. I want to stress, that even though you will do one-on-one work with another student, that this is a very safe and fun environment to do so. Everyone I have worked with has adjusted to take into account that I am a beginner at this. The most experienced fighters go slow, make their strikes obvious so I can see how to block or evade and give advice on how to do it better. Kru Wijers makes sure that everyone stays under control and stresses that we are there to help each other learn, not to prove we are better. If someone is going too hard he will remove them from the class. There are men and women of all ages in my class and classes solely for women as well. This is a beginner's perspective on the Thai boxing classes. There are people at this gym who train for MMA fights and serious, full-contact, knock-out Muay Thai. I have no intention to do that myself and that is perfectly fine here, but having that level of training going on, and working side-by-side with dedicated athletes raises the bar for everybody. I can't recommend this place enough.
