There really isn't a lot to be said that hasn't been stated in the positive reviews below. Bob puts hours into his facility to make sure that you get a quality lift whenever you pull up. The equipment isn't brand new, but it is so well maintained and taken care of. New machines will compensate for the weight you are moving, these machines force you to push/pull honest weight. I would give it 6 stars if I could.

Great multipurpose power rack w/ chinup implement which was perfect for my training as a weighted Chinup specialist.

Needed a gym to go to while visiting my folks here in Oregon over Winter Break from college - 2nd best gym I've ever been to hands down.* Equipment is sturdy & robust despite showing it's age (the gym's been open since 1947), and fulfilled my needs perfectly. (Plenty of power bars, squat bars & deadlift bars to go around, also plenty of sturdy chinup bars which was perfect as a weighted calisthenics specialist.) It's a gym very proud of its history. Dave & Bob are also super knowledgeable and graciously lended a spot whenever I needed one. Very friendly people. Great training environment for people who actually are serious about & enjoy training, yet even so folks here are nice. Only heads up I can give to those considering going here is to realize parking will sometimes back up to the surrounding side streets, but even so not a bad neighborhood to park at all. That, and it can get crowded during peak times but assuming you're already versed in proper gym etiquette you should get along with the people around you just fine. Definitely worth the 22-minute commute in my case to train at a place that's a part of vintage strength training history. (And the membership rates are MUCH more reasonable than any big box gym I've been to. Best option for those traveling & looking for a temporary & affordable training environment.) *Note: I'm from the midwest/ WI & MN area and #1 gym in my experience is Los Campeones off of Blaisdell Ave in downtown Minneapolis. Great gym with numerous similarities to Loprinzi's with the added benefit of more space & some newer equipment sprinkled in with plenty of old. Highly recommend if anyone reading passes thru that area. Otherwise Loprinzi's is easily 2nd best overall in the country and best gym for my needs while visiting the Pacific Northwest. Thanks again fellas!

Top Ten reasons why Loprinzi's kicks ass and why I'll never leave: #10) You have to sign in on a sweat and blood stained notebook. That way I can see if Don B. has been slackin'. #9) A hanging graveyard of destroyed olympic bars decorates the front wall. #8) I had never seen someone (besides me) benchpress about 600lbs raw before. #7) If you see a clean piece of equipment, you know you should avoid it. #6) Some of the chicks here lift more than I do. #5) The most interesting, helpful, and friendly gym-goers and owners I've met (awwww). #4) They have a crack-bin at the deadlift and clean-&-jerk stations. Ok, it's just chalk...but some people use that stuff like it's crack. #3) All dues are honor system based, and if you don't pay, you know Loprinzi can break you. #2) They have a state of the art LCD television. That only plays TV shows from 1950. #1) "60 Years and still going strong. I'll never quit!"

    Amen!

I got to work out tonight in Loprinzi's Gym in Portland. It was started in 1948 and has had lots of celebrities come through their door. It smells of urine and sweat and probably hasn't been dusted since the week it opened... and it was freaking awesome! Seriously, my home gym is a great big huge thing affiliated with a hospital. I love these small places with history and character. The staff was very friendly and I got a great workout in. Even though most of the equipment looks like it is from the 80's, it's in great working shape, save for a few pieces that needed upholstery work. I'm a big dude at 6'3" with a 50" chest, and the lack of adjustability on a few machines were an issue, but I'd still recommend it for the ambiance and being around "real lifters". I'm an out-of-towner so i only needed a day pass and they provided it for $10, plus I bought a t-shirt as a memento.

Only in Southeast Portland, would you find a gym with a cat!

Loprinzi's has everything you need for a good workout, including a pool and an upstairs where there are a few classes in the big open space.

Too bad this gym is in such poor condition and dirty. The fees are low, so that must be the draw. I value my health.

It is very welcoming and supportive; the community is strong and friendly. Some schools are very businesslike, or don't encourage students to be friends outside of class; this one is the opposite! 2. The style is very eclectic. You will learn to punch and kick, but you'll also learn to use weapons and to move in several different distinct ways. This style of martial arts has a lot to learn and challenges my mind and body every class. 3. Speaking of challenge, this class is a full body workout. I never step off the mat without getting really sweaty. The teachers make time to encourage you to drink water frequently during class. 4. This school and community are extremely inclusive. There are at least any many women and trans students as men; frequently men are in a drastic minority. There is no "bro"/macho culture here as there is in many other schools. While it is somewhat expensive for the number of classes (2-3/week at least as a beginning adult student) you get access to compared to some other schools, the pricing is not a secret (it is shown on the website and the staff will be happy to talk with you about it), I feel it is worthwhile based on about 10 years of training in other schools (even ones that cost less and had 10 classes a week).

In addition, plan to pay quarterly for new belts and testing. The testing I've seen is the same for the past 2 belts so not sure what my kid learned new that required 2 new belts when he did the same requirements for each belt. Parents can't wait inside to sit and watch their kiddos. They have a zoom that you can join but it's one camera and you can barely see if it's your own child so no point in the zoom. When asked why parents can't wait inside, especially in the winter and rainy months, they told me that having all the parents would exceed the building's occupancy capacity... this is questionable as there is plenty of space. I was also told to not distract students. An easy solution is to not black out your windows so that parents standing outside can spread out and observe from outside. Another solution is rotate which days parents can come in. Tues / Thursday can have 1/2 parents observe from inside while other 1/2 observe from outside on Tuesdays and rotate on Thursdays. The only way to watch your child is through the double doors which needs to be cleared so people can go in and out. Most parents are unable to observe and are left waiting inside their vehicles for 30 - 40 minutes. Parking is also difficult. I regret signing a membership.

I cannot speak highly enough about the quality of the training my family and I have received from Sifu Sean Kelly and Michael Wall: they provide a great mix of martial arts fundamentals along with practical application. Mo Duk Pai is a form of Kajukenbo which is an early mixed martial art that came out of Hawaii in the early 40's. This form of martial arts pulls from KArate, JUdo and jujitsu, KENpo, and BOxing and also incorporates elements of Muay Thai, Arnis/Eskrima, and Systema. Mo Duk Pai is awesome! The Mo Duk Pai community in the Portland area is a fantastic group of skilled martial artists that share their experience with all students. With three schools in Portland, there are a ton of classes you can take with some of the best people to train with. And, the classes are very affordable, especially with discounts for multiple family members. In addition to martial arts, check out Functional Range Conditioning (FRC) training with Michael Wall. I've done several classes with him and he is a fantastic resource and wealth of knowledge with respect to getting your body moving to its full range of motion and achieving your fullest potential. This has been a great addition to my martial arts training. Like I said earlier, I cannot speak highly enough about this school! I look forward to training with you.
