I decided to try a class here because it was close by to where we were staying. I've only been doing BJJ for about six months, so I'm as new as they come. But I wanted to continue my training while on vacation. I showed up to a Wed 09 basics class and what absolutely COULD have felt incredibly intimidating, was anything but. I was the only female of maybe 10 to 11 students and 2 instructors. There were 2 other white belts in addition to me and the rest of the students were blue, purple and brown belts. I felt welcomed and safe and like I belonged there , regardless of my belt color or lack of time in the sport. I LOVED learning new techniques and getting different perspectives from the instructors and other higher belt students. Thank you for making this white belt rookie feel welcomed! They had a try one class free so I completed the form on the site but never heard back. I ended up calling to find out if we could drop in to any class or if we needed to let them know in advance. The answer was just let them know when we wanted to drop on (and apparently there was an issue with the website not processing the sign up for a free class properly). When we came to class we were greeter by the owner Frank, who was super nice and had us review the consent forms and other paperwork. They have a small lobby with a TV so you can see what is going on in class but it is also a suite with a large roller door on the back so you can go around back to watch class (if you like). We decided to sign our child up and they were given a uniform and belt same day. We got an email with the tasks for completion to get stripes and earn the next belt. Kids are allowed to stripe test at the end of class. The studio is clean, staff are friendly and helpful and it seems to be a community feel (I don't go super often, I am the one to take my kid to dance). They have summer camp (and camps over break-we haven't attended one yet) as options as well. Overall a very positive experience and an activity my child enjoys doing!

The style taught is Okinawan Ryuei Ryu. It's pretty rare, and we have the best people teaching it. Our Shihon was taught by the founder of the style's son. He's also the guy who brought this style to North America. I am savoring every practice since I am graduating soon, and prospects for continuing karate up in the Bay Area are slim. Monday: 6-8pm Basics and Kumite (sparring) Wednesday: 6-8pm Kata and Kobudo (weapons) Saturday: 8:30am-12pm Kid's and adult kumite, kata, kobudo, and basics. The program is very close knit. I feel like this is my family away from home. I'm going to miss training here. *sheds tear*

The classes include kumite, kata, basic trainings, kubodo, weapon classes: sia, pole, etc. After training there 6 months, my flexibility and basic body movements are much better. The missing part of the training is the cardio training and weight lifting. Currently I stopped the karate because i am now focusing on weight lifting and cardio. The style and kumite training I would say,.. hmm.. don't think you will be good at street fight, rather consider that as a martial arts or a sport. If one wants to learn more practical fighting style but still in karate, maybe try kyokushinkai. (but i didn't find any in SD areas. :-S)
