Martial arts is one of the…read morecornerstones of human evolution; the ability to use yourself to defend against the forces of evil. Chinese Martial Arts Institute is a beacon of light in La Mesa. It's not just another studio, it's a family, and not like Cobra Kai, but more like The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. You don't wear a shell, and you don't fight an Asian dude with a shiny metal helmet and razor sharp gauntlets, but you do train with the best and practice Northern Green Dragon Shaolin Kung Fu. So when people ask if you're kung fu is good, you can say, "hell yea." Training here is always a blast, and quite a workout. Before CMAI, I never really worked with weapons. Well, I did used bo staffs, because I got serious bo staff skills, but I never practiced with swords. You get swords here. That's how hard core they are about showing you the power of ass kickery. Sifu Dwight Love is one of the most awesome practitioners of the art, and an accomplished instructor. He's an older black man with a face that says he don't take crap from no one, but he's very kind and always patient with his students. Just think of Samuel L Jackson and replace his guns with Chuck Norris' ass kicking fists of fury and round house kicks of death--that's Sifu Dwight. Going to CMAI, I've learned 2 things: How to kick ass and how to take names. It's a great studio and they have lessons for all ages.

We have been at this studio for about 2 months now and are still loving it! Shingong Guerro is…read moreupbeat, enthusiastic and his passion for martial arts really shines, especially when he's out on the mat teaching the kids. One thing I really appreciate about his classes is that he focuses on the whole - yes, he's teaching the kids form and technique, but he's also using the opportunity of his captive audience to reinforce values, morals, and safety tips. And from a black-belt school, you'd expect nothing less! Parking can be a bit challenging, but that's true of any local business in PB that doesn't have a giant allotted parking lot. As long as we get there early, we can always find a spot! We especially like the flexibility of the weekly classes and we had a chance to experience one of his regular Parent's Night Out events and LET ME JUST STOP YOU HERE. This is not your average PNO, no, no no. First, the event lasted about 4 hours and seeing as how it was gonna be past my kiddo's bedtime, I showed up about an hour before it ended, thinking I'd be pulling him away from a movie and that'd be it. However when I showed up, all the lights were on, the music was pounding and the kids were having a freakin ball!!! I'm pretty sure every kid had the same huge smile plastered on their faces and it was so cool to watch. I saw my kiddo having so much fun I thought, "I can't tear him away from this" and I sat down and joined a few other parents who were also sitting down (no doubt having come early like myself thinking this would be a mellow come-and-go gig). What followed for almost an hour after that was watching the kids play games, move around and stay active and lots of cheering and smiling. Heck, I even wanted to join in on the fun at one point! I was truly blown away with the level to which Shigong and his team planned and executed a fully -themed event that was fun, educational, and active. Never in my parenting history have I seen that event done so well. And that's how his values flow into his studio time too - always giving no less than 100% and willing to do what it takes to excel in his art. Kiiiyah!

The class teaches the kids essential skills while constantly encouraging the children and providing positive reinforcement in a fun environment. It makes me want to join! Class schedule is great- lots of options. We checked out two others and this was by far the best.

Training with Sifu-Don and the SoCal Wing Chun Academy has been a life-changing experience for my…read moreson and I. My wife and I want our kids to be involved in some type of sport or physical activity outside of daily school. My son had been a dedicated club soccer player for a few yrs but COVID put a damper on that so we were looking for something different he might like. I, personally, had always been a Bruce Lee fan and loved the art of Wing Chun but had never taken part in it. My son was 12 yrs old and had only done a little wrestling as far as self defense so I signed us up for a free week of classes. Usually a 12 yr old would be in the Youth classes but my son was allowed to train alongside me (46 yrs) in the adult classes with grown men and women. As soon as our first class was over he said, "Man, I can't wait to do this again!' He and I were hooked. We continued on for an entire yr together where we trained and fought alongside each other. I had no idea the impact it would have on him to see me (his own father) take my own ups n downs throughout the process of learning. He witnessed me get humbled many times during trainings (hard for a father to do/admit) but I knew I wanted him to see that I was willing to let him see me fail so he could also see me continue on and not give up. It took incredible discipline and dedication for us both but our bond and relationship as father and son took immense strides forward and watched my 12 yr old boy become an artist of Wing Chun during that time. He developed a love of the craft and discipline that Sifu-Don Presto and the many other coaches instilled in him along the way: Samba, Mike, Gabe, Charles, Jamere, Kevin, others. All great men with great character that held my son accountable but also gave him great praise and encouragement when earned. This was the longest my son and I had done anything together, how incredibly rewarding as a father. When I needed to take a break during summer, Sifu-Don offered my son a position as a coach for his Youth classes on Mon-Tues-Wed evenings. He was honored at the opportunity and jumped right in. Working with both, adults and young children (ages 6-12 yrs), men, women, girls, boys, has taught him so much as a young man and character development. Sifu-Don Presto and the staff of coaches at SoCal Wing Chun Academy (Murrieta) have made a life-changing impact on my son and I and have ignited a passion for the martial arts in him that I never saw coming. My wife and I are so incredibly thankful that we made this connection and hope other families may take advantage of such an opportunity. Stop by SoCal Wing Chun Academy today. -Tyler King
