    End of 2016 belt promotion.
    Cole S.

Started training here a little over a year ago knowing absolutely nothing about jiu-jitsu. Despite having a bunch of black belts and several world champions, Rodrigo's academy is also very beginner friendly (start with the 6:45pm Monday-Thursday class if you're new to BJJ). Incredible talent, laid back atmosphere, and a focus on both the sport and self defense aspects of jiu-jitsu. Everyone at the gym has been friendly and welcoming, and I'd highly recommend training here. They also have a great kids program! This academy is the second oldest in San Diego for a reason.

This place is a hidden gem! Haha. I recently moved to San Diego from LA and I happened to find this place while researching BJJ schools in SD. For clarification this is the same place where Prof Rodrigo Medeiros formed the BJJ Revolition Team, the same Prof Rodrigo Medeiros who was on the famous Carlson Gracie Academy team and who also earned his Black Belt under Grand Master Carlson Gracie Sr. This place is full of incredible BJJ history. What's amazing about this place though is you couldn't meet a more down to earth, friendly group of people. These guys are good; no like seriously good. Lol. On any given night there will be 2-8 black belts with everyone from Blue Belt and up being super legit. You would think that with all this talent there would be egos but these guys are all smiles and jokes off the mats. The first day I walked in, I was definitely intimidated, but everyone was super friendly and even took the time to say hi despite me being a brand new white belt. There is one large mat area along with a side room consisting of a second smaller mat. There is a good sized changing room with another side room with 2 showers. Classes are available all throughout the day and the cool thing about the Intro to BJJ classes is that really experienced guys are willing to take the time to teach the class on different nights with Prof Rodrigo. Also the beach is less than a couple blocks away so a lot of people here train then surf or vice versa lol. The instruction you will receive from Prof. Rodrigo will seriously be on a different level. Every move he teaches is thorough and understandable but it's his experience teaching that really shines through. He really teaches you the mindset of an opponent and what you will go through with each move when encountering resistance firsthand. This instruction is second to none and should really be experienced in person. I've been here for about a month and it's been awesome! The environment is great along with the people. If you are unsure of where to go and if you are new or old to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu look no further and stop by!

Master Sam is one of the most amazing teachers we have ever had the pleasure of seeing in action! He provides just the right balance of encouragement, discipline and drive. Master Sam is a great motivator who definitely seems to understand what each of these kids are capable of -- and he doesn't let them get away with anything less than what he knows they can achieve. In just a couple months, he has helped my shy and fairly non-athletic son gain new skills, focus and confidence with each class. We did a free trial class first and while my son was clearly struggling, Master Sam was incredibly patient, attentive and encouraging. My son ended up coming home that day determined to learn how to do a somersault, and ended up practicing on the bed everyday. Just a month later, he has been running confidently into a jump somersault and beaming with pride. My son comes home from class each time wanting practice the moves (to the chagrin of my sofa cushions) and eager to show Daddy & his grandparents videos of his class. We have been incredibly impressed with our son's rapid progress -- but most of all-- super thrilled with how genuinely excited he is about learning Tae Kwon Do! Thank you Master Sam!

He solicited us for martial arts classes and to purchase an e-bike bike. We did buy a bike and when we returned it quite quickly because we did not get an e-bike - but rather a non-working bike... We were told this was warranted as it was brand news... I had an extremely disappointing experience with this bike shop, and it's less about the bike itself and more about how the owner handled the situation. We visited the shop immediately when we noticed pieces breaking off the bike, the bike not charging, and the battery not holding any capacity. This forced my son to use it as a traditional bike, which defeated the purpose of the purchase. Every time we returned, the owner called me a liar and spoke to me condescendingly, often bringing up the fact that I'm a woman. When my son, who is on the autism spectrum, initially bought the bike with his own money using a Venmo debit card, he was excited about his first bike. Unfortunately, all interactions with the owner since then have been highly contentious. When we explained the issues, the owner would repeatedly dismiss our concerns and call me a liar. We even requested a refund, but instead, we ended up spending about $200 more to have the bike assessed, only to find out it was assembled incorrectly, the motor wasn't working, and the battery was dead. I emailed the owner, stating that he had plenty of time to remedy the issue and could do the right thing by replacing the battery, especially since he had taken advantage of a 14-year-old autistic child. However, he continued to be belligerent and contentious, often cussing at me. My son no longer feels comfortable approaching the owner because of his mean demeanor. We're now stuck with an $1800 bike that never worked. We will be taking this matter to the ADA enforcement agency that protects those with disabilities. I strongly advise against allowing your children to be around this man, as he takes advantage of children and disrespects women. This will be how your family will be approached

I wanted a place that felt like a true wellness space where I could bring clients for Jiu-Jitsu, fitness, and recovery. This place exceeded all my expectations. The facility has everything you could ask for. Clean, spacious mats, restrooms and showers, lockers, a fully equipped gym, and recovery options like a cold plunge, infrared sauna, and professional massage chairs. Everything is very clean. You can tell right away, even by how fresh the place smells. One of the best parts is the location. If you are a surfer like me, it is within walking distance of Tourmaline Surf Park, which makes it perfect to train after a session in the water. Parking is also very easy. I usually find a spot within 30 to 60 seconds since it is in a residential area and quieter during the times I train. They offer a variety of classes for all levels, along with yoga and personal training. What really stands out though is the community. Everyone is welcoming, supportive, and easy to get along with. If you are thinking about checking it out, this is your sign. Come try it for yourself. You will not regret it.

On the day that we scheduled to come the sign in tablet was not finding our reservation. There was some confusion with the check-in as the tablet didn't recognize our name. Halfway through class we got pulled aside to sign a waiver at the front (just me). We also explained to them that we were contacted by someone and offered a free class. The class schedule is like a rotation. You get to hit the bags and move on to a bunch of core exercises. At the end of our class we had to "sign out". Which meant we had to talk to a rep at the front. I think they use that opportunity to sell us classes. It was kind of awkward because we were dead tired and I felt kind of put on the spot. I declined and the following 2 weeks after I received several voicemails of them wanting to offer me another free class. I don't think boxing is my thing personally, but I can see how this can be an effective HIT workout for those who would enjoy boxing. I would give this place a 3.5 round it up to a 4 because the instructor and employees were kind to us even though there was a miscommunication.

One thing I really appreciate about his classes is that he focuses on the whole - yes, he's teaching the kids form and technique, but he's also using the opportunity of his captive audience to reinforce values, morals, and safety tips. And from a black-belt school, you'd expect nothing less! Parking can be a bit challenging, but that's true of any local business in PB that doesn't have a giant allotted parking lot. As long as we get there early, we can always find a spot! We especially like the flexibility of the weekly classes and we had a chance to experience one of his regular Parent's Night Out events and LET ME JUST STOP YOU HERE. This is not your average PNO, no, no no. First, the event lasted about 4 hours and seeing as how it was gonna be past my kiddo's bedtime, I showed up about an hour before it ended, thinking I'd be pulling him away from a movie and that'd be it. However when I showed up, all the lights were on, the music was pounding and the kids were having a freakin ball!!! I'm pretty sure every kid had the same huge smile plastered on their faces and it was so cool to watch. I saw my kiddo having so much fun I thought, "I can't tear him away from this" and I sat down and joined a few other parents who were also sitting down (no doubt having come early like myself thinking this would be a mellow come-and-go gig). What followed for almost an hour after that was watching the kids play games, move around and stay active and lots of cheering and smiling. Heck, I even wanted to join in on the fun at one point! I was truly blown away with the level to which Shigong and his team planned and executed a fully -themed event that was fun, educational, and active. Never in my parenting history have I seen that event done so well. And that's how his values flow into his studio time too - always giving no less than 100% and willing to do what it takes to excel in his art. Kiiiyah!
