With my master bathroom repair-and-renovation looming, I wanted to expand my knowledge base more, and Rich and the DIY Academy were once again there to help. Instead of a class, I participated in the volunteering arm of the program and assisted in the demolition and subfloor preparation of an actual master bathroom. It was a whole day of cutting, grinding, smashing, and trashing, but it certainly affirmed the old maxim, "The best way to learn is to do." A lot of times it seems educators in any field see fit to show and tell, but not so here. Rich was always there to supervise and provide support, but it was apparent that he was dedicated to having the student learn by action and not by observation. His methods provided a great blend of experience-based learning and direct instruction. Being able to take part in each process necessary to strip a room down to its bones eliminated two obstacles that scare off most homeowners from attempting to do their own renovation work. First, it removed the mystery of a home's construction: every layer of material holding the old bathroom together could be seen and held. Second, it provided some level of expectation: now having seen how the various surfaces and materials are held together, I know my own bathroom's construction will not be terribly far off. This all works together to establish a sort of baseline muscle memory for the work to be done in the future. The school also has a ZERO Tolerance policy for drugs but students would use drugs in the parking lot and come into class high and skip class. The big problem with this is the school would push those students through and give them a diploma. Due to this Lincoln Tech has a bad rep with employers because they would have students apply there and know nothing because they did not apply themselves in class. I have come to events on campus many times over the years, but my most recent visit was eye-catching. Significant resources have been poured into the campus as new buildings and grand refurbishments and renovations continue apace. This should be the norm for all HBCUs around the country. It is a testament to the value the state places on its universities, although the level of investment pales in comparison to College Park. The quad is the envy of other schools, some with higher endowments, tuitions, and budgets. It is big enough that it feels like a university but still small enough to feel like home. My favorite feature/building/concept is the Entrepreneurship Living Learning Community (ELLC). Home to students who want to be entrepreneurs, here they live (brand new dorms), eat, and learn (classrooms and other spaces). There is a business and creative synergy that is self evident all throughout the space. I took a cohort of school age mentees for a tour and lunch at BSU. They were over-the-moon about the Student Center Dining Hall's food and modern decor. The food choices included fresh vegetables and fruits, custom made salads and bowls, hand crafted pizza, grilled to order items, and high quality rotating items from a self-serve bar. The seating area had huge windows where the sunlight shone through. The academic and recreational buildings were top tier. But what struck me most was the energy, passion, and intelligence of the students and faculty. They treated my mentees like little brothers coming to campus to learn from older siblings. The students seemed supportive of each other. D9 organizations got along too., but the Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha, Inc. always raise the bar. Bowie State University should be proud of the work they continue to do and the student needs they continue to meet. Five stars easily earned!

We then asked the school if we can hire an instructor for a day to give us personal instruction on both our boat and how to fly our spinnaker. The school sent to us Sean, an instructor with tons of experience with spinnakers of all types. Sean provided us a detailed assessment of our equipment and the role of each member of crew-- the pit person, the trimmers and the foredeck person. At the end of the day of flying the chute, we all felt more confident and are ready to race spin fleet.
