I went to the Beginner's Class and we made a pillow. It really gave a feel for the machine. Toni (the owner and instructor) was great and really helpful. She made it fun to learn. I think the best thing about this class is that it left me feeling really confident about using my machine (at least for simple things...for now!) I believe this was money WELL spent. Located in the Golden Belt warehouse district, Liberty Arts has a small gallery inside their warehouse, in addition to the large co-working area. This gallery is open to the public on the last Thursday of every month as well as more recently for Durham's Third Friday. During this time, visitors have the chance to view a vastly varied set of media [incredible woodwork, bronze casting, blown glass and even handcrafted pipes!] but also chat with artists and explore the studio. The co-working space also offers community classes, and although pricey, they have the ability to offer some very unique opportunities. Everything from jack-o-lantern casting and carving, welding education, plasma cutting and metalworking, clay-metal fusion and bronze casting. It was such a fun class where they walk you step-by-step on how to make your own rug. Before the class, you'll send in your design and color requests. They'll let you know if your design is too hard for a beginner level class. It was a fun class and quite challenging. You do have to stand while you tuft which makes you more tired especially after a few hours, so dress for comfort and breath lability as you might get hot! You can bring snacks and something to drink but keep in mind it's a small space. Once you're all done, they'll take your rug to be finished. Takes about two weeks before it's done for either pick-up or they can also mail it to you. Definitely a good idea for a date night, birthday activity, or just a fun activity with your friends or solo. Almost forgot - they also offer classes in the CLT area as well!

I come here a few times a week to work out and take fitness classes. Durham is truly helping those with all the programs offered at the recreational centers. Some classes are free and others have a small fee but everything f is within reason. There's a small gym, basketball court, computer lab, dance studio, and more! The staff at the front aren't always the friendliest but they're there if you need help. You'll have to specifically ask. I personally love the hip hop aerobics class that's offered ... FOR FREE! The instructor is energetic & personable. They have a field directly across & there's always some events/games going on weather permitting. Entering can be a bit tricky as one side is typically gated and you enter through the back & not the front which is street side. Check them out & try a class!

There was a woman working in there who barely acknowledged my presence and every time I would move to look at different art, she would oddly stare at me. A couple (white woman and man) came in after me and she greeted them and even offered to show them around which made me, a black man, feel very uncomfortable. I eventually approached her to ask about pricing on a particular piece and her tone was very short and very different than the tone she had with other guests. I knew that moving to the south would be different, but I read that Durham was very liberal so I was shocked to be treated in such a manner. I left without buying anything because I refuse to spend money in a place where I feel I am unwanted. This was a horrid experience. If you're not white, I highly recommend NOT coming here!
