Today was a wonky food day for me. I slept in terribly late, and because I am typically not hungry for a few hours after I awake, I ended up having a late lunch. Missed dinner tonight with the family and at almost 9pm, I find myself hungry again. Started looking through the food delivery apps and came across the Orange Bucket. Jumped on Yelp and read the review from Colanie B., trusted her judgement (she has very well written reviews by the way) and decided to place an order for Laksa. I've been intrigued by Laksa since I first saw it on an episode of Top Chef (the chef failed miserably at it, poor thing) and being someone who has a passion for everything noodle, I pulled the trigger and placed an order. First, my order arrived quickly and to the chef and driver's credit, very hot. Yay! It arrived deconstructed, with the noodles and toppings in one container, the soup in another, and finally a small container of chili paste. I grabbed a bowl and put those bad boys together. The toppings consisted of shrimp, fried tofu, and I think bean sprouts and very thin slivers of egg(?). The smell of the broth permeated through the container and the bag it arrived in, a very pleasant smell of what reminded me of lemongrass. The noodles stumped me a bit, I'm not sure if it was bihon, but regardless, there was a healthy portion of it as well as more than enough soup. So this laksa reminded me so much of Thai curry, the broth was creamy and very tasty. Together with the noodles, topping, and red chili, it was definitely a homerun, I inhaled it. The shrimp were sweet, I was very happy with the size and taste of the shrimp. Surprisingly, I was not a big fan of the fried tofu. I love tofu, but the tofu in this dish had kind of an odd sour/tangy taste to it. I'm not going to pass bad judgement on it, maybe that's how the tofu was supposed to taste.
If I could change anything about the Laksa, I would add a bit more salt or fish sauce to the broth. It was a tad bit bland, and when combined with the noodles, the lack of salt was more pronounced, but overall, I was very happy I chose the Orange Bucket tonight. I look forward to my next visit, hopefully I will be able to bring my family. My husband is from Louisiana, I would love to treat him to the seafood buckets I see this restaurant is offering on their menu. read more
