Recently I attended a symposium at UVA for EDS (Elhers-Danlos Syndrome) and one of the things they…read moretalked about was "gaslighting" and that it was not only friends and family that gaslight those of us who have complained of the same symptoms for years and even decades, but also many in the medical field. I am writing this review a year later because I am still so darn mad at the treatment I received at Rapidan and want to warn others. Originally I went in for a tick bite, the nurse I saw was rude and completely discounted my concerns with the bite, telling me it was "normal" and when I explained that I had never in my life felt the actual bite from a tick at the moment it happened like I had with this one and that I was concerned about possible infections because I have hEDS, she snapped at me, telling me that it was impossible that I had EDS because I was 65 and would never have lived to be that age if I had EDS. I was shocked and explained that there are 13 types and that she was mistaken, that I did not have vEDS, the most severe type, but have hEDS, the most common type and those of us that have it certainly do live past 65. She voiced in an angry tone that I did not know what I was talking about and that the bite was nothing, again I reiterated my concerns and she again told me I did not know what I was talking about and left the room. Even though a year has passed, it bothers me that a medical professional would be that nasty to a patient, would have no clue that there are as many types of EDS and would discount a patient completely when a fact was pointed out.

Unfortunately, my mother's experience under the care of Dr. Leonardo Espinel has been extremely concerning and has left her fighting a life-threatening condition in the ICU. My mother was initially given one diagnosis, which was later changed to a different condition, and she was treated accordingly. Despite continuing symptoms and repeated concerns that she was not improving, she was reassured that what she was experiencing was "normal" and was sent home with antibiotics. She followed up multiple times because she continued to feel unwell and knew something was wrong. Rather than receiving further evaluation into why her condition was worsening, she was repeatedly told that her symptoms were a normal part of recovery. Eventually, her pain became severe enough that she returned to the emergency department, where it was discovered that her condition had deteriorated significantly and she had become septic. She required emergency surgery and is now in the ICU. What makes this especially difficult is that she had repeatedly sought help before reaching this critical state. While this review reflects our concerns regarding the care she received leading up to this emergency, I would also like to recognize and sincerely thank Dr. Bradley Ryan for his swift action and decisive care when the severity of her condition was finally identified. His willingness to act quickly in a critical situation may very well have saved my mother's life, and our family will always be grateful for his professionalism, skill, and compassion during an incredibly frightening time. I understand that medicine is complex and that no physician can guarantee outcomes. However, it is difficult to accept that repeated reports of worsening symptoms were not more thoroughly investigated. Patients trust their physicians to listen when something does not feel right, especially when they continue seeking help because they are not getting better. While my experiences with other providers in this practice have been positive, my mother's experience in this case has been devastating. My hope is that this feedback encourages greater attentiveness to patient concerns and more careful reassessment when a patient's condition is not improving as expected.

This clinic is out in a rural area, much of their clientele are poor and sickly, salaries must be pretty low, and they have had some problems with turnover. And I would have to see a LPN or PA rather than an MD. But they have been excellent. My previous dr was a big city internist from a famous medical school who had been highly recommended, but the PA I see at Blue Ridge has been a BETTER provider. He gets to know you, his information flow is excellent on medicines, treatments, medical conditions, his knowledge is extensive and up to date, and he strikes a perfect balance between recommending options and providing information to let me make decisions. I can post questions and requests to the patient portal and they usually call me the next day with a response. Another nice touch is the lack of authoritarian status games -- the providers go by their first names. Plus the facility is very nice, the staff have been professional, and they don't make you wait a lot. My doubts were misplaced. I can recommend this facility whole heartedly.
