For several years, I've enjoyed going to this Y when I am in town. In the past, I've done Zumba, Body Pump, Pilates, Yoga and Spin and have enjoyed most of the classes. I remember happily sweating like crazy during Tasha's Spin and Body Pump classes and enjoying Gyptsie's dance classes in particular. If you are an intermediate/advanced student, be aware you will not be challenged by the yoga or pilates classes here, but there are many other fitness classes for you to take. This time, due to a lumbar issue, I am walking on the treadmill, doing the elliptical and some weights. (Definitely miss the group classes - sigh.) There are 3 different types of steppers - some are harder than the rest. The treadmills (10) all face the windows and get the morning sun, so I wear a hat daily. If you arrive before 8a, you are assured of a treadmill. If you arrive at 9a, you probably will have to wait. I've noticed most people walk very close to the controls or walk fast and have their hands on the arms. I like to stay towards the back edge and swing my arms. The clientele are varied in age and fitness level. Don't see kids in the early AM (because they are all in school). Front desk staff are helpful and friendly. Check in is via scan card and an automated voice says "Welcome!" Long hours (5a to 10p mon-thurs) and open 7 days a week. There are spray bottles and paper towels to clean equipment (I see most people doing this) after you use. Clean bathrooms. I put in a request for the cleaning staff to clean the dust off the front of the treadmills and the rear of the steppers. There are many options for older adults (guess I should count myself in this group - my PT gave me the "seasons of life" speech when I complained why I wasn't healing as quickly as I did in 2007). Besides water aerobics, there are dance classes (slower pace than Zumba) and also chair classes where participants sit in a chair and use balls and resistance bands. New things I have noticed since my visit in 2013: 1. Treadmills, Steppers are new - Precor brand - with TV's (though as of now not working - still waiting on Time Warner Cable). 2. Yoga mats in group exercise room are real yoga mats (not the super thick foam ones that were very dirty b/c people wore shoes on mats) and there are spray bottles of disinfectant and a sign for people to wipe down their mats after using. 3. Personal Training - 3 trainers: Brandon, Tasha, Andy. 1 hour is $30. You can buy packages. 4. Open on Sundays starting at 1p. Director is Bruce Zahn - spoken to him twice. He's from Los Angeles where he instituted a recycling/green program at the Y there. His office is in a corner of the treadmill/weights room. Affable and easy going. If you are going to be in town for more than 2 weeks and like to work out frequently, the monthly pass is a good deal. Otherwise, you can get a day pass. Ample free parking in the front and side and rear of building.

3 weekends I tried to use prepaid passes and the park was closed because of "possible rain." Then on a sunny day, still closed.

The YMCA is a great family environment. The employees are very friendly. And I love the new gym equipment.

The addition of this gym to our area has truly been a blessing. I personally was a person who…read moredidn't like gyms for a multitude of reasons. But once I saw the Planet Fitness model on TV, I thought it would be good for our area. The staff keeps it clean and they instruct the customers to do their part in cleanliness and they do. My only drawback is they don't have an area for a person riding their bike to the gym to leave it. That drawback is not a reason to take away a star because they are doing really well with everything else so far. I hope it stays this way!

I know the latter is out of the control of the gym staff/franchise, but it's just inconsiderate. I had also quietly shared with management my observations of rogue personal trainers training their clients in this location. It wasn't just once or twice, it was a frequent occurrence at this location, by repeat offenders. Today took the cake. I decided to try out this location after a month had passed. The place was dirty, dusty. The bathroom was a mess: pieces of toilet paper, paper towel, hair balls, hair ties, and other assorted pieces of trash on the floor. One of the toilets was stuck on flush. I let the front desk person know, and he said he would "have her look at it". I can only assume that he was referring to his female associate. After my workout, I walked into the same, messy/gross ladies room. A temp out of order sign was placed on the stall door. Nothing had been cleaned up or picked up off the floor. Additionally, the same personal trainer, was obviously and blatantly training someone, while staff were in clear view/earshot. I was there for over two hours. The three staff members I saw at the front desk stayed at the front desk, scrolling on their phones and horsing around, when they could've put in the effort to tidy the place up. It's unfortunate because the management and some staff members at this location do work so hard.

The only negative I have may be a positive attribute for you, it is a family gym. There are plenty of activities and child care options to allow parents to fill the gym with kids, young and old. Also- cleaning wipes were not readily available. I had to search and eventually ask where cleaning wipes are to wipe down machines! Daily rate: $10 The weight room is large and well stocked. (Plenty of squat racks to go around!) I was there midday on a weekday and the crowd was so nice! However around 3 PM a group of teenage boys did make their way in and begin to easily overwhelm certain pieces of equipment, which is not ideal. The cross training area is incredible, full turf to allow sled pushing/tire flipping. There is a large jungle gym to allow for diverse and versatile workouts. The gym has two types of locker rooms, a quick change which has about 30 lockers (bring your own lock) and two full bathrooms. Also executive style locker rooms which are plush and include saunas. Their gym cinema option is awesome. It has treadmills and ellipticals, in front of a huge movie theater screen in a darkened room. There is as pool! The manager and his son are pleasures to work with! When I'm in Orangeburg I'll be sure to stop by again.
