I live within two minutes' drive of King Street and hadn't been out to breakfast in ages. I literally could not remember the last time. So decided to go for a late Sunday breaky to the south end of King Street, and chose to try The Organic Pomegranate. It had changed hands and had a new name and facelift ages ago, but I never bothered to try the new place, choosing to go down the 'tried and trusted' path. Maybe I should listen to my gut...
The décor is cute newtownesque and the tables offer a view of the passing parade, two standard must haves. They advertise breakfast tagines on the menu which sounded great, but I didn't see anyone else in the place eating one so I went for the safer option of scrambled eggs, bacon, mushrooms, grilled tomato and toast.
We got coffee pretty quickly, but it was long gone before the food came. As was my patience. It took aaaages to come out, and we weren't the only table looking around to peer at the kitchen, hungrily. When it finally came out it was plonked on the table quickly, I had to wait and call the guy back to ask for some cracked pepper and tomato sauce. The pepper arrived but I had to go up and hover around the kitchen area to get the sauce. There was only one and a half pieces of plain toast too which is clearly not enough for a $15 breakfast. Being an organic café I was hoping for some kind of gourmet bread, but sadly no. The eggs were lukewarm, the bacon was ok, the mushrooms were garlicky and the tomato (half a roma tomato) was good. Pretty much underwhelming.
Went to pay and got the chance to observe the chaos of the kitchen, it looked like no one knew what they were doing, misplacing orders, the works. We had to wait for a couple of minutes so got a good look. No tip. read more
