On the day we went, they featured beans from Honduras "Marcala" & Sumatra "Putra Gayo Washed". The cold brew they served us came from Colombia. I was most impressed by their cold brew - it was light, fruity/floral, and super creamy. I can't think of any places in the US that does cold brews that well. My husband's favorite was the Honduras Marcala as it was very easy on the tongue, "sip easy" indeed it was. Luckily we got there early enough to snag seating outdoors. Single O was on a list of things to do while in Sydney, so I meandered my way over there one morning for breakfast. I arrived to find a very charming, yet tiny, venue. There was a main entrance in the front and a takeaway entrance to the side. I made my way to the front and was seated right away, but in a tight spot at a built in bar that fit 3 people (I was in the middle). I reviewed the menu provided to me but was still at a loss for what to order, so I asked the waiter for a recommendation when he returned to take my order. He suggested the corn fritters, so I went with that, bacon, and a latte. Well, the fritters were an excellent recommendation. They were so good and I inhaled all of them, the bacon, and the latte. This was plan 'C' after checking out other disappointing hip new SH spots. On a late Sunday morning, we were fighting real hunger anxiety and frankly not too many options in that immediate vicinity on Sundays. Thankfully, we've had the best luck in these small cafe+ type eateries in our Aussie trip so far. We had a bit of a wait since we were a party of 3 (about 25-30m) with a few solos getting in before us. The seating is limited indoors with a few booths and counter seats but with another 6-7 double seater tables outside. We ordered a latte, flat white, matcha latte to start. Espresso drinks were really delicious with the flavorful coffee taste really tempered by the creamy milk. We asked for matcha without the additional agave sweetener since these are typically very sweet. It came out amazing and not too sweet. For food we ordered the avo show (with extra egg and bacon), the chicken toastie, and the chickpea cilbir. Everything was just simply amazing. Highlights - avo show: achiote cashew cheese (tastes like peanut butter); chickpea cilbir: whipped feta (super creamy and rich); chicken toastie: the seasoned crumbled chicken and halloumi/mozzarella cheese. Service was brisk and friendly. Really cool slightly grungy industrial vibe (you even have to go outside to go back inside to get to the restroom). A bit pricy but very much worth it. read more

This is a very popular place, queues around the corner so they must be doing something right. First of all, the service is great - some of the best I've experienced. Everyone was really friendly and very lovely. That was the really good side of Single-O. The other side was that I paid $37 for a chickpea dish and coffee. It was, again to be fair, pretty nice ... it's just that it wasn't $37 nice, more like $22 nice. I don't mind paying for good food (and this was good food!) but it did feel really expensive for what I got. If the prices dropped, I'd go back otherwise I'd wish them well and I'll be trying my luck elsewhere. read more

Wow. All I can say is wow. The food here is so freaking good. This was easily one of the best gluten free (GF) avocado toasts I have ever had, & the poached egg & bacon were worth the additions. My partner loved the Native Thyme Lamb dish, & both of our meals were extremely flavorful & fresh. My iced oat milk latte was incredible as well. I'm not the hugest fan of coffee and nor do I know much about it, but I thought the coffee here was fine. I visited so many cafes while I was in Australia, but this one stood out to me because of the food. They've got your basic avo toast and bread with spreads, but they also have mapo mushroom on toast and sticky rice on their all-day menu. I had the corn and riberry fritter which was delicious, but also a great example of how cool the menu is. Corn fritters with avocado mousse, a big roasted tomato, and kimchi? Thank you, Yelpers for telling me about this place. I did a search for breakfast/coffee that was within walking distance of my hotel (about a 10-minute walk) and this place came up. On the 2nd morning we were there and still jet lagged, my sister and I made our way over here to get some coffee and breakfast. While this place is small, it's super cute and efficient. I got the beet hummus my sister got their famous banana bread with cappuccino butter. My beet hummus on toast was art on plate and it was perfection. This beet hummus was creamy and earthy and once paired with the avocado and fresh ricotta, it was scrumptious. I want to recreate this beet hummus at home! Give me the recipe if you have it. I didn't love the banana bread, but I can see why some people rave about it -- it's a large piece of bread and the butter is abundant. And about these flat whites. Why don't we drink those in the US? A few months back, Yelp released their top 100 list of coffee shops in Australia. Checking in at #14 on this list was Single Origin Roasters which places it as the 2nd highest rated coffee shop in Sydney behind Social Brew in Pyrmont. My visit here earlier this year makes me feel this placing was quite warranted. After flying into Sydney early in the morning from LA and leaving my luggage at the hotel I was staying at, I decided to head over to Single Origin for some brekkie and my first flat white in Australia. Since it was my first time in Sydney, I got a bit lost trying to find this place by foot. It is located on a side street just off Elizabeth Street. Single Origin has two locations on Reservoir Street. If you are looking for a coffee to go, your best bet is to go to Single Origin Sideshow which is a couple doors down. But come to this location if you are looking for the Aussie cafe experience. The cafe is fairly small. There are a few tables inside the store with a few more located outside of the shop on the sidewalk but with roof coverage. Being that this was my first dining experience in Australia, I was a little bit nervous about ordering. The staff gave me plenty of time to look over the menu. After I had decided, I waited a few minutes as they were occupied. When you are ready to order, it would be best to just grab someone's attention. The breakfast menu here is fairly concise. It contains standards like banana bread, eggs on toast and muesli. While the coffee and tea menu is a bit different from what I am used to in the US. If you want to order a latte or a flat white, choose the espresso offering. As for specialty coffee offerings, they have pour overs and Aeropress coffee. Decided to order the eggs on toast ($8.50) as I wanted something simple along with a large flat white with milk ($5). The eggs prepared over easy came on a large piece of toasted artisan bread. Alongside the side of butter, I thought it was cool they offer Himalayan pink salt with the toast. The toast itself was crispy. It was a basic dish, but prepared nicely. As for the flat white, it didn't disappoint. Flat whites have less milk in them than lattes so they have a stronger coffee flavor. I really enjoyed the version that they have here as it is smooth tasting. Plus it had some heart shaped coffee art on top. If you are looking for a great coffee cafe in Sydney, I would recommend Single Origin. The only thing is this shop is small, so space may be an issue at certain times of the day. But only if you are getting a meal. If it is too crowded, you could always just go to Single Origin Sideshow for some takeaway coffee. Over the holiday period, we finally had the time to just chill out and visit some cafes we've had on our list for a while now. We do enjoy single o coffee, and have had it a lot when the roaster was previously in our local area. Since it's departure, we've enjoyed it at a few cafes around Sydney. Recently we opted to visit its popular specialty coffee cafe in Surry Hills. In a side street that's not too busy with vehicles. Whenever your drive past, it's always busy, evidence of it being a quality cafe. We arrived and had our name on the waiting list, but not for long, we were seated fast. Staff are obviously experienced in high turnover of customers, taking our order as soon as we sat down to have whilst we selected and ordered our food. Nice smooth milk based coffees, which use only 3% milk but they also have filter, pour over, batch brew and iced drinks too. The menu is extremely appealing and the majority of the menu items are healthy and made with using ethical produce, interesting flavours and Australian native ingredients. We had the mothership bowl, with poached eggs, avocado, roasted mushroooms, roasted pumpkin, fermented cabbage, kale, turmeric cashew cheese, mixed grains and hazelnut dukkah. We often order this sort of dish if it's on the menu, but this one is one of the better ones we've eaten. The flavours are really lovely and we enjoyed it a lot. Kurt did want to try the coffee spiced beef brisket burger but went for a healthier but also appealing meal, the native nori toasted tomato with black rice, edamame, tempeh, asparagus, sesame dressing and a poached egg. We're also good authority that this place does a great bacon and egg roll. We'll be back to try some of the other good stuff on the menu too. read more

Good gawwwwd this place is ridic droolworthy! Everything from the friendly service, cute outdoor seating area and laid back music make it the perfect lil spot in this trendy area for a lil breaky! Naturally, we started off w a bit of bold and flavorful coffee and then tried out the hot chocolate (since apparently hot chocolate is quite the craze here! who knew?!) -- not too sweet and a rich, dark flavor. Both were fantastic so we were off to a good start! Then, we ordered the kedgeree of quinoa (w smoked ocean trout -- smoked in-house-- egg, cauliflower) and the avocado toast on 5 grain sourdough and they both had really unique flavors and were just plain AMAZING. We're trying our best to abstain from being boring food eaters and coming back right away but we'll def drop in at least one more time before we head out :) read more

It was definitely WAY better than my other (and only) flat white experience - a Starbuck's in NYC. (yeah.......) Our server was cool and patient. I wasn't familiar with all the different styles of coffees but he was happy to explain it. I ordered a cold brew at first and he asked if I like really dark coffee. And since I don't, he said he would let me try it before I decided. Unfortunately, they ran out of it - so that's when I settled on the flat white. For breakfast, I went with the bacon and egg roll ($14). It has 'house-cured bacon', a fried egg, tomato chili chutney, and cheddar cheese. It's a tad pricey for a breakfast sammie but it was really good. The chutney made it stand out and gave it the perfect level of spice - just enough to wake you up. A lot (or pretty much most) restaurants in Sydney won't let you split the bill, but they let us do that here. The cafe wasn't too busy for a Wednesday morning at around 9, but I'm assuming it's because most people are at work already. However, there was a long line a couple of doors down - which I believe is where you can get their coffee to go. Now I wish I had gotten something to go to bring with me to Bondi. But then again, I don't think my friends would have appreciated a highly-caffeinated Mel while they were trying to quietly relax and tan at the beach. read more

While I was sipping it Tobey "Spider-Man" Maguire sat down at the outside table next to me. We shared a knowing smile. No words were needed. The latte was god. Damned good. If I knew what a crema was I would wax lyrical about it in this paragrah. I don't though, so I won't. I ordered a short black next. I've never ordered a short black in my life. It came as a tiny smudge of thick, super bitter black-brown sludge at the bottom of a white coffee cup. To this day I don't know if this is how short blacks are served or if I copped a dud. This is Single Origin though, so I was forced to assume that they were right and I was wrong. Tobey Maguire winked at me as he got up and left. Pretty sure he was coming on to me. I've been working in a building on Castlereagh St with the worst push-button coffee ever. In reply to my moaning in the lift a Very Nice Man pointed me in the direction of Single Origin Roasters and made my life complete. Copper pipes feed beans through the walls, each coffee has a blurb describing its' palette and nose, and the bunsen burner type operation at the front of it all means bizness. My handsome barista was testing the water temps with a thermometer and agitating the water with a wooden spatula kind of thing and it let it be known, these people know coffee. I was half expecting to be charged $7 for my double soy piccollo and was pleasantly surprised to pay $3.50 for the best damn coffee I've had in a long time. Now I'm going to have to move into the city goddammit. read more

Single Origin Roasters is one of the originals on the so called urban city coffee movement and is still leading the Sydney roasting scene. Comfortably compact inside with some wooden seating outside, a tiny cafe where you can get your coffee and tasty seasonal feed. The coffee menu is extensive, from your normal espresso and milk or black coffee to filter, Aeropress, cold drip and pour over. You can always ask the friendly staff if you don't know your coffee terms. I had the miso buttered corn, shallot, braised greens, asparagus and deviled poached egg. Perfectly poached egg. And my kids loved this dish, a huge plus. The corn was tasty, but I was wishing the braised greens were something else, it was bland. My husband had the chorizo with fried egg, salsa verde, caramelised onion and tomato on rye toast and it was delicious. It was tasty, I found myself stealing a few bites out of my husband's breakfast and salsa verde so good I had to restrain myself from licking the plate afterwards. It was a pleasant experience that I would definitely come back for. A great way to brighten up my morning! read more
