We came on a Thursday afternoon around 4pm Parking was super easy and quick, right in front in the main parking lot. As soon as we arrived there was already a train waiting to load up and depart, we quickly purchased tickets and walked right on. We were on the train in less than 5 minutes from the time that we had parked. The bathrooms are clean, they have two and a portable toilet behind the restroom building. The ride itself claims to be 12 minutes but I'd say more around 10. Not much of a difference but something to note. The view is absolutely beautiful and we'd love to do it again. I highly recommend it!

The parking lot we parked in had a max 2 hour limit, which isn't enough time to walk the entire perimeter of the reservoir but it looks like there are other lots that don't have as much time restrictions. The Lake Temescal loop is a beautiful easy-medium short walk that's a little over a mile…read more As you walk the only partially paved trail you'll see a ton of wildlife (ducks and fish) and quite a few dogs being walked as well as a waterfall water feature. The views are picturesque and it's quite serene for how busy it is. The second half of the trail (after you loop around near the fallen tree) isn't paved and in poor weather would be likely too muddy to be particularly safe, so I would probably walk elsewhere after a good rain or while it's drizzling. All in all, we had nevr been to this lake before and it was gorgeous so we fully intend to return!

It's a good alternative to nearby Sibley if you don't want to hike that long but for something longer, Huckleberry has a trail connecting to Sibley as well the Oakland hills, if you really want to you can get down to Joaquin Miller Park or Roberts/Reinhardt Redwoods; it's all connected. This trail is easier clockwise. I did it counterclockwise and it was a bit steeper on the way back. I liked how it was mostly shaded and had lots of ferns. The trail was a bit narrower than I was used to so beware of having to pass slow hikers. You could see views of Mount Diablo in the distance.

I stumbled up on this open space area on a drive of Skyline Drive. I had no idea Oakland was so…read morevast and had so much open space! The preserve is 928 acres with lots of trails to explore. The main one is Round Top, Volcanic, and Skyline loop which is a little over 3 miles, and there is a trail connecting to the nearby Huckleberry Botanical Regional Preserve for a longer hike. I noticed a lot of purple and yellow thistles. I liked this preserve because there were many views and you could see far out all the way to Mt. Diablo and beyond. It used to be a former volcano million of years ago and has lots of different rock formations which someone into geology would appreciate as well as a couple of labyrinths.

We wanted a more of hike, so after the tour we ended up doing a big loop. For those who might have reactive dogs, there are a ton of off leash dogs.

"Popular Trail in a Spooky Location."…read more The staging area is on Old Tunnel Road in Orinda. There's also an entrance to the Sibley Park close by. There's only a few spaces at the actual staging area, but on the road to the service yard, there's a lot more spaces. I believe the road to the service yard is where the old tunnel used to be, but I think there's nothing to see there. The day that I visited, there was a sign that said the trail was closed--darn I missed it! The trail was actually in good shape--just a portion of the trail was washed out. But don't worry, I didn't go down the hillside. Along the trail, there are no facilities or water, so be sure to bring lots of water. The trail takes you up to Grizzly Peak Boulevard. If you keep going, you will end up at Tilden, near the steam trains. So overall, I'm glad I hiked this trail. At least once, anyway.
