Wimberly, one of the most beloved and dedicated public servants to the City of Oakland Park. His grandparents moved to area in the 1920's where they made their living as vegetable farmers. Harry began his career in Oakland Park by mowing lawns for the City. For the next 40 years he worked in various positions where he led a team of City employees responsible for streets and building maintenance, parks and roads, solid waste, water, stormwater, wastewater, and garage operations. Harry was known as being willing to do any job needed. He became the City's Recreation Director when the parks and recreation departments were combined and retired as the Director of Public Works in 1996. Harry is perhaps most well known for for helping organize the City's first Youth Day celebration in 1957. Youth Day continues to live on with Broward County's longest-running parade and it is still held every year at the park. Today the City of Oakland Park's youth enjoys all that Harry Wimberly put into the city at the Wimberly Athletic Complex. Park amenities include a baseball/softball diamond, concession stand, football field, and hockey rink. Just south of Wimberly Park is the brand New City Park which opened in 2022 and has lighted basketball court, pickleball courts, a woodland themed playground with shade cover, splash pad, and restrooms. Harry Wimberly loved the children of Oakland Park and he was devoted to making it the best city it could be. It is fitting that such an important gathering place and recreational resource in the community carries his name.

There wasn't a lot of parking close by the playground, only street parking nearby. There might be more parking by the baseball fields. By 1920 the Lions were international with chapters in Canada. In 2017 the Lions Club celebrated their 100th anniversary in Chicago where they were founded. Today there are 1.4 million people who are Lions positively impacting their communities with service projects. A charter member of the Coral Springs Lions club was Lewie Mullins, the first elected mayor of Coral Springs. Mullins was a Coral Ridge Properties Vice President who was the first developer of Coral Springs. Mullins also helped build the Covered Bridge in town. Sadly he passed away at the young age of 49 after only two years in office. Lions Park was dedicated on June 6, 1970. It was the first park in Coral Springs. The land for the park and Hunt Elementary were donated by Coral Ridge Properties to the school board who then donated back 6 acres for the park. Lions Club members John Nekich and Col Ralph Gray fundraised to build the baseball diamond which was used by the first little league in the city. The early Coral Springs community enjoyed the weekly BBQ's sponsored by Coral Ridge Properties along with baseball and softball games. The park was the end of the town parade route and held the celebrations after. Today Lions Park is still bringing the community together. Park amenities include basketball courts, benches, concession stands, grills, pavilions a playground, picnic tables, restrooms, sand volleyball courts, softball/baseball fields, a paved walking trail, and tennis courts. The Lions Clun is still an active organization in the city today.

Park amenities include a shade covered playground, covered basketball court, three sports fields, concession stand, dog run, exercise path, and disc golf. There is also a building that can be rented for meetings, special events, classes, and private parties. There is a plenty of parking for the recreational leagues. I was surprised at how nicely kept this park is. On the day I visited there were several teams using the fields, a group of people enjoying the shade covered basketball courts, and another group playing disc golf. I walked around for exercise and checked out the wildlife near the water. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here again but if you live in the neighborhood this is a wonderful recreational amenity to have.

They have a large basketball court area, a small park, football and 2 baseball fields. They do a lot of children's team leagues here. My nephew Jack plays here 3 days a week for a little league baseball team. He used to be on a soccer league here too a few years back that practices on the football field. They have a concession stand that is open during games that takes cash only. The park is kept pretty clean and the bathrooms are usually decent enough to use for a public park. There is plenty of parking in the lot. Most of the people that use this park either live in the neighborhood or just take their kids there for games etc. It's an ok park nothing special really.

So glad some friends told us about this place awhile back when we were talking about places to take the grandkids in the future. But even if you're just a kid at heart, You may want to visit here. Wear your bathing suit. It's easy to find. And there's ample free parking out front. Mid week when we stopped by it wasn't very busy. But if I had kids, I'd be here every weekend -- especially in our recent hot weather. First and foremost is the interactive water/splash pad. So many machines spraying water, buckets dumping, etc etc. The three kids there were squealing with joy and excitement. Such fun. There's also a story walk/trail for children with various stops plus a regular walking trail. A covered playground with equipment for kids. A Volleyball sand court; basketball court; grills; picnic areas... all with a large swath of green grass in the middle -- perfect for events/concerts. On the south end is the canal C-14 with a fishing pier. More "waters edge" as in the name. And also for adults, there's a covered area right near the water with all sorts of gym/exercise equipment. Don't know what more you could want except maybe a few more resting benches along the main trail for the older folks... Go check it out. Bring the kids.
