What a great little theatre! If you wanna feel like you are watching from within the show no matter where you sit this is the place to go for a show. Plus all of the staff are super nice and helpful, the location is super clean and elegant. They have a small table for refreshments and snacks, plus a bigger bar area with some seating for even more refreshments and snacks to pre-game in the pre-show. The show we saw Fat Ham was excellent and honestly one of the best written and acted shows I've seen in a long time. Definitely grab a show here! read more

We went to Orlando Shakes for our annual visit to see A Christmas Carol, and it was fantastic. It's always a holiday favorite, but this year we especially loved it because they changed things up a bit--it kept us excited to see what was coming next and made the story feel fresh. The actors and actresses are very talented, and the performance overall was great. Tickets are reasonably priced, which makes it a more affordable option if you love theater but don't want to spend the higher prices at the Dr. Phillips Center. The venue itself is easy to enjoy: there's a private parking lot, a lobby with drinks and snacks, and even a little gift shop to browse before or after the show. All in all, Orlando Shakes delivered a wonderful holiday experience, and we'll definitely keep coming back for A Christmas Carol each year. read more

We saw A Christmas Carol at Orlando Shakes and couldn't have been happier. A fun side note for anyone who grew up in Orlando in the 80s and 90s -- the theater is in the old Orlando Science Center building, which adds a nostalgic little twist to the whole experience. The set design was fantastic, and the caliber of the acting and singing truly impressed me. I wasn't expecting it to be that good, but the performances were genuinely moving and professionally done. I left feeling so impressed. A quick heads-up: the snack bar is limited if you have kids who need something more filling -- it's mostly drinks and candy. But what they did offer was well stocked and convenient. Overall, wonderful job by everyone involved. I absolutely cannot wait to come back to this beautiful theater. Highly recommend! read more

Went to see Henry VI, Part 3 - The Rise of Richard. Enjoyed the performance and the intimacy of the theatre. This was Shakespeare without scenery and lighting effects (Bare Bard), so it had a spontaneity and raw energy that was refreshing. Orlando Shakes is an institution of the central Florida arts scene, offering an annual season of classics and contemporary work for children and adults. In the adult season, you can expect at least one Shakespeare production, often including a unique Bare Bard (original practices) production, rehearsed and performed in the style it would have been done in Shakespeare's day. I'm a current subscriber to the Orlando Shakes theater company and recently had the opportunity to attend a performance of the holiday classic "A Christmas Carol". The Orlando Shakespeare Theater (Orlando Shakes) produces classic, contemporary, and children's plays. The current Subscription Season has seven productions and includes professional actors from throughout the country. There are four theaters at the Center with seating accommodations ranging from 70 through 324 seats however, because of the intimate nature of the theaters there really isn't a bad seat to be had. As I've experienced more of the artistic productions and companies throughout the Orlando region, I've come to appreciate the wonderful amount of talent and creativity we have available in this area...and the Orlando Shakes has and continues to be one its standard bearers. read more

I attended "Miss Nelson is Missing!" the musical based on the children's book on my son's class field trip today. The musical is there until Nov 22. It runs approximately 45 minutes with no intermission. The play was fun! We enjoyed the sets, the actors and the special effects. The play is about a nice teacher named Miss Nelson who goes missing. She is replaced with a mean substitute teacher Viola Swamp. The students try to solve the mystery of her disappearance and bring her back. read more

If you spend any time in Orlando, you have to see a show at Orlando Shakes. Contrary to the name, they do run other plays. They parking is easy and it doesn't hold a ton of people. Maybe a hundred to 120. Everyone gets a great seat. The ticket folks were great except for the two ushers who decided to loudly chit chat in the back during the prologue. It is really hard to understand William S in the 21st Century is the Prologue was a wildly appreciated way to set the scene and give the backstory. We watched MacBeth which was a fabulous rendition and the director gets my Uber-applause. I'm sure all the others are equally as good. During intermission they have snacks and drinks for most tastes. Review #918. What a lovely and precious gem located in Loch Haven Park in Orlando. My wife and I went one evening to see their production of The Three Musketeers. I had no idea what I was in for, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The first thing I noticed was how small and intimate the theater is. My wife and I were seated in the upper level, and you could still see the color of their eyes. Their version of The Three Musketeers was totally entertaining and absolutely hilarious at times. For example, there is one scene where it's a three on three sword fight. And just as they begin the sword fight, they all go into slow motion. As an audience, you are not expecting this, but when it happens it's actually very funny. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, we were looking into purchasing other performances, but at this time we are under lockdown with the coronavirus. Rest assured that when they open back up, my wife and I will be purchasing tickets for other performances. You will be supporting the local arts, local performers, and they have a nice bar too. If you have never been to Orlando Shakes, take a chance, buy a couple of tickets to any of their upcoming performances, you will be very pleased. And that is because I say so! Enjoy. read more

In complete transparency, I have a PhD in theatre. That distinction can make some people snobs about performance. I can be that person, to be honest. But Orlando Shakes is just too good to let that part of my personality out. The productions at this theatre are joyful, exhuberant, and exquisitely crafted every time. We've been season ticket holders for awhile, and even if I haven't seen a particular production before, I know that Shakes will put together a beautiful production of each piece. Their Shakespearean pieces are an absolute delight. You won't need a degree in the Bard to understand them. Every actor makes the lines seem real and present to the audience. You'll roll with laughter at the comedies, and the tragedies will make you think deeply about humanity. Where I've been truly impressed is with the histories. We don't understand the political importance of these plays today, but Shakes helps us understand how important these tales are in examining power structures. If you're thinking of going at the holidays, don't hesitate. The holiday shows are simply a pleasure for everyone in the family. Pro tip: the side sections are my favorite. I've been taking my son to performances since he was 5 years old and it's always such a great experience for the both of us. I went to the Shakes for the first time for the Orlando Fringe Festival. It is a beautiful venue and the staff are engaging and very helpful. As a first time Fringe goer, I was unsure where the different venues were (Pink, Blue, etc.) as they did not seem easily marked on the inside. I realized that the color balloon display in front of each theatre section signified the color of the venue. Duh! The directions outside of the venue were fairly well marked, but if its the first time you are going for the Fringe, I suggest you look for the balloon display to find the correct venue! I have seen a few productions at Orlando Shakespeare Theater and all of them were phenomenal in their own ways. Despite the name, they do not exclusively put on Shakespeare productions. The first production I saw here was West Side Story. This production turned me on to the professional quality of productions at this theater. I thought the singing, dancing, acting and production quality were very high. The second production I saw at this theater was Peter and the Starcatcher, which was another hit in my book. Their production of Man of La Mancha was a highlight. I felt like we were all there to see a famous name but I was pleasantly surprised when the rest of the cast held their own next to him on stage. Finally, I saw their authentic production of Twelfth Night this past season. They did this show with an all male cast and in the original dialect. They kept the house lights on at all times, as it would have been when it was originally performed. I feel like I can count on an enjoyable performance every time I come to the Orlando Shakespeare Theater, so I will definitely be back. read more

What to say about shakes! I have a deep admiration for the performing arts that I look forward to exploring thanks to Orlando shakes! I recently saw the play "In The Heights" on behalf of yelp and shakes itself and I must say, it really is a must see! Before I commentate on the play, I would like to just point out a few things. The parking is right out front and upon entering to your left is the ticket booth. Associates are very kind and willing to help. The entrance then stretches down very far to the right with various hubs to lounge around in. Shops, a bar with more then just alcohol, and several other displays and portraits await your perusal. You can eat and drink some of the items purchased at the bar. The play was absolutely fabulous. I found myself really resonating with some of the content. It can become awkward crying next to someone you just met, but hey, you do it for the love of the game! I really enjoyed myself. Though, I won't say much as to not spoil the play. The actors were really dedicated to their performances. The story was actually very interesting and development was great. The soundtrack is appropriate for the overall theme. It is presented in a mainly rap form, I'd really like to notate that. While it wasn't challenging for me to understand I did happen to converse with a gentlemen who had trouble understanding the play. Overall I had a blast! The play was great! The snacks were yum, cheap to! I look forward to next time! read more

5 Stars for consistently fabulous local shows as well as a venue that supports the arts in many iterations! I'm so lucky to live near Orlando Shakes! It's conveniently located across the parking (yup- dedicated parking) from the Orlando Museum of Art and a hop, skip, and a jump away from the Menello Museum- forming a trifecta of art! I've seen musicals, a one-man-show, Fringe Festival shows, and a literary reading in these theaters and each experience was lovely and intimate. As an added benefit, the many unique spaces are available for event rentals and can accommodate sizes ranging from a board meeting to a wedding reception. Pro-tip: don't miss out on checking out the terrace out back. It leads to the Firehouse Museum which houses some pretty amazing old firetrucks! Yay for local arts orgs! read more

We live 2+ hours outside of Orlando and I've been going to their shows for several years now. It started small, as all addictions do, with "Evita," and things expanded from there. I have yet to see a bad show at the Shakes! Well worth the drive (and the hotel expense, etc.) Loved "Evita," also "Macbeth," also "Midsummer Night's Dream" (perfectly set outside at Lake Eola), also "The Fantasticks." A local theater, what's not to love? I really don't take advantage of this being in my backyard as much as I should. It is located in Loch Haven Cultural Park in Ivanhoe! It's a great venue that hosts a variety of plays and event throughout the year. They are all about celebrating Classic, Contemporary, and Children's Plays. You can purchase single ticket shows or passes. I have been here plenty of times but most recently was last month for a one man play: Dracula: The Journal of Jonathan Harker. WOW! WOW! WOW! What a performance. And what a fab venue to see a one man show. It is intimate enough to feel every piece of the action yet not stuffy or any feeling of being claustrophobic. For lack of better words, it's a perfect balance. This play used Stoker's original text of journal entries, letters, and newspaper clippings and it definitely was jam-packed with plenty of thrills and chills. It was perfect for the season and not only was it captivating and haunting, it was also touching. The passion from the actor really shined through and he had my complete attention through both acts. The stage production was top notch as well, I really did forget I was sitting in a theater at points. Everyone that works here and the community behind it should be proud of themselves and every production they put on. Bravo! read more

I've been constantly impressed with every production I've seen at Orlando Shakes. For a small black box theater, they have a wonderful way of transforming that space and putting on some of the best shows I've seen. There's really not a bad seat in the house. This production of In the Heights was AMAZING! I've seen quite a few plays here from the student field trips to the summer series. I'll always jump at a chance for tickets to see anything here. So let's talk about In the Heights for a second... oh my! I laughed, I cried! I was so amazed at the emotion that was felt in the theater. If you get the chance, get those tickets today. I was introduced to this venue recently when I attended a matinee showing of Les Miserables. I was SO blown away by the performance and could not believe that this little venue was hosting productions of this calibre in our "little" city of Orlando! I am a season Broadway show ticketholder of Bob Carr which has transferred over to the Dr. Phillips performing arts center. While I love the big productions, I love the intimacy of this venue and that you can enjoy a show on a smaller scale but the performance is still Broadway worthy. We had seats up high but I honestly think there are no bad seats in the house. There are even seats on both sides of the stage so you're really getting a front row experience. I especially loved that there was an exit back behind us at the top of the stairs so we didn't have to go all the way down the stairs. One cool thing I noticed was that after the performance, the headliners were just hanging out in the lobby chatting with guests ..I was a little starstruck....no diva behavior there! :) I didn't really spend too much time in the lobby but did notice the gift shop and that they were doing some sort of 50/50 raffle. They also sell refreshments but only drinks are allowed inside the performance. Parking is shared with the Orlando Museum of Art so get there early as it fills up fast. You can also try parking off street on Mills or in the Orlando Science Center garage(probably for a cost). Had such a great time I'll be looking into tickets for my husband and I to attend in the future. I urge you to check this place out when you get a chance. You won't be disappointed! read more

I was super impressed with my whole experience at Orlando Shakes and I would definitely come back for other productions! I was able to snag tickets for the "In the Heights" production last month and it was AMAZING! I had never been to this theater before, so I had no idea it would be like a "black box theater" experience where the stage is in the center and the seats are surrounding the stage. It made me feel like I was so close to all of the action and actors/actresses and that I was literally in the barrio! The props and set were perfect and I felt all of the emotions that comes with this play. Also, the people who were working the day of the performance were so friendly and helpful! They made sure we knew where our seats were and which entrance is the best way to get to our seats. If you are hungry or want some alcohol, they do have a bar that serves sodas, wine, alcohol, food, etc. It is a small theater, but I loved it and will definitely be back! read more

I had the pleasure of seeing Dracula : The journal of Jonathan Harker at this theater last night. What a great show. The leading actor John P. Keller was magnificent in his roles. I always thought one man shows to be incredibly boring but this show was anything but. I was amazed how fluid the transitions from character to character were. Dracula was eerily amazing. The actor's contortions and voice along the set's lighting made dracula other worldly. The beautiful set was wonderfully used to put you in the scene - to feel what he was feeling throughout. He gets spooked and so do you. Amazing show. I have been at this theater once before for the fringe festival to see a more light hearted show and was fairly pleased as well. I am excited to come back to see Shakespearean plays in the future. read more

Rarely do I get the opportunity to write a review with such pleasure, as even when five stars are deserved, rarely so much as this Theatre. I must begin with the Theatre itself. It is not only a pleasure to get to, quite easy, but parking is abundant and gratis. This was a surprise to me, as in my former city parking at the theatre would run anywhere from $5 to $20. The staff are helpful, warm and quite informative and the theatre - there are actually more than one inside, a smaller and a larger - was clean and quite comfortable. They sell beverages and snacks at reasonable prices and have space to consume them pre show or in intermission. We were led into the smaller theatre and I was quite excited as we had wonderful seats, yet anywhere you would have been is intimate and cozy. I do not know how many people this particular theatre held, but I would surmise maybe around 200. The stage was beautifully and expertly designed, they truly did a wonderful job. Now I must say that the Orlando Shakespeare Theatre deserves many stars, but what truly took it over five for me, was the incredible quality of the actor in "Dracula: The Journal of Jonathan Harker". Please let me explain something. I love the theatre and have been to many shows in Chicago, Miami, Louisville, Bogota and now here. On occasion one can expect an excellent performance from a professional troupe that unfortunately falls flat, or expect an amateur performance from volunteer actors that is quite nice. I didn't know what I was about to enjoy (or not) from John P. Keller. As he was the only actor in the play it could have gone either way. Once he came out and began to speak, goosebumps began to erupt on my arms. Dare I hope that it will continuously be as wonderful as his opening? Would he wane and fade as the performance continued? I was most definitely not to be disappointed in his amazing and nothing short of award deserving acting. I can honestly say that in no theatre ever, have I seen such incredible acting. As he narrated the journal, his expressions, intonations, and pauses were absolutely perfect, and I must say that each time he went to speak for Dracula that he transformed into the monster himself. His Vlad Dracul was absolutely perfect and incredibly disturbingly evil. Then with a blink of his eye he would transform into Jonathan and later Quincy, Van Helsing, or Arthur. His transformations into said characters including the different (and perfect) accents were so absolute, so complete, that I left feeling a whole troupe of actors had been on that stage. After seeing Mr. Keller perform, we spent the next two days commenting on how amazing he truly had been. My only regret was that we saw the play on the penultimate day and couldn't come back to experience it again. Orlando Shakespeare Theatre has proven to be of utmost quality and can hold its own next to any in NYC or other theatre town. I heard Mr. Keller will be the lead in "The Life & Adventures of Nicholas Nickelby", a play I will now see only because I would love to see his performance. (Note, for anyone wondering... NO I do not know the actor personally, he isn't a friend, relative, acquaintance or friend, relative or acquaintance of anyone I know either. He was just THAT GOOD). read more

"In the Heights" cast was beyond amazing and inspiring. Can't say enough great things about this production and location. Went to see this fabulous play "In the Heights" this evening. It was an elite event for the yelp elite members. Gratis! We were not allowed to take photos during the play, so I took some before and after. The theater was very small and allowed for a wonderful view of the action. This is story about a struggling Latino community, (barrio) coming from different countries and backgrounds. It will make you laugh. It will make you cry. It will make you dance. It will make you be glad that you live in this great country. This is a must see production. read more

After a not so thrilling dinner my friend and I were starting to worry about our show to follow at the Orlando Shakespeare Theater. We arrived and the venue for Rent, the musical, was small and intimate, huge plus. From the third row, it felt like we were a part of the show; living the story with all the Rent characters. I loved it. As a venue though, I would love to continue seeing musicals and plays here. From the ushers to the snack table clerk, everyone was so attentive and helpful! We were taken directly to our seats and given a program to read over before the show began. None of this pointing and find your way, they accompanied us to our seats. Not that the theater is grand in size, but that kind of service makes the experience so much more enjoyable. read more

Lovely customer service at the Will Call & Ticket Box Office - all my tickets were in the envelope (hey don't laugh - I have had previous mishaps with missing tickets and so now always check at the box office before walking away!) and the folks behind the counter were super lovely and nice and answered my all questions about upcoming shows. My tickets for this theatre were to see a preview performance of a show called "Dancing Lessons" (part of the Theater's 2015-16 program) and I was really impressed by the amazing production values of the show, and especially the comfy seats! My tuckus was happy and comfortable in those seats, which was a very good thing as there was no intermission in the 2+ hour play. BTW, this is my only minor gripe of the evening as wish that the usher or the stage manager who come out at the start of the show, had told us about this lack. BTW, the "Dancing Lessons" production values so impressed me that I actually plan to go and see their adaption of The Tempest. Almost 10 years ago, I saw a brilliant and gorgeous production of this play which portrayed a very visually striking storm effects. That production used real water during the initial shipwreck and a waterfall for the grotto scene, and since then other productions just haven't lived up to that theatrically, so it been ages since I attempted to see another stage production of the Tempest! But Orlando Shakespeare Theater company won me over, even if I did think the hero of Dancing Lessons took a little bit of a lazy approach and just recreated Sheldon from the Big Bang Theory in his portrayal of Aspergers. However I am now digressing to a review of the play I saw rather than of the Theater, so getting back on track in next para :-) Lots of loo stall in the ladies means another plus for this theater, and they were nice and clean!! Parking was a bit of a challenge as we went on the same night as the Orlando Science Museum's first Thursday night gig, but we did find parking towards the Rep Theater Lot. It's in a beautiful location right behind the Orlando Museum of Art and I always enjoy going. The theater is intimate and every seat is a good one. I feel that the theater tries hard to put on a variety of performances to provide something for everyone. Also, don't worry, it's not just Shakespeare! (Though you should go see a Shakespeare play here because it's good for you) The theater partners with UCF and always selects an amazing cast. The performers are truly exceptional. Additionally, the sets are well-made and often incorporate some exciting elements (for example, sometimes performers actually fly!). If you're a student, you get $10 off your tickets! If you don't mind a bit of a gamble, they also offer student rush tickets at a super discounted price. You arrive 30 minutes early and wait to see if seats are left and then you get to go for a big discount! Overall, this is a fabulous theater in a great location. read more

Wow...I just saw part 1 and 2 of The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby on Saturday....and wow, was it an amazing performance!! Each part was about 3 hours each, with 1 intermission for the first and 2 for the second. You had to buy tickets separately for each, and we decided to purchased the dinner package, which included dinner at White Wolf Cafe plus the 2 tickets. I was hesitant to see both parts on the same day, especially since we were basically spending half our day at the Theater. It was was well worth it! In between each part, there were about 2 hours to spare for the dinner. I thought I'd be tired after the first 3 hours, but I could not wait to finish dinner and get to the second part, which was just as good, if not better. Everything was perfect, from the set design, to the costumes, to their English accents. They kept us laughing, crying and cheering. If I had to compare this to a Broadway style play at say Bob Carr or even Broadway itself, I'd say this blows most of them away.
