The Skodje Bridges are a series of masonry arch bridges that were built at the request of a couple of school teachers in 1880. The construction started in 1911 and was completed in 1922. They are the longest masonry arch road bridges in Norway. Due to their age and weight restrictions, they are limited to pedestrian traffic today. A newer steel arch Straumsbrua, Straum Bridge, was built in 2004 to accommodate vehicles crossing the Skodjestraumen. A nice stop for a short walk along the way to Trollstigen Road.

The hotel has a slightly rustic feel to it, and is decorated almost like a cabin. There are some good benefits to staying here, as with a decent room you get a really nice free breakfast (which is a HUGE bonus in expensive Norway) and free WiFi (which is a huge benefit in an area with spotty mobile coverage). You can pay extra for a fjord view, which is a must-do. The view cannot be believed. They have a restaurant on site that does a traditional Norwegian buffet for dinner, which you should have at least one night. The food isn't presented well, but tastes really quite nice. Just one things... the hotel is not in the town. It's a 2 km walk that is uphill on the way there, and with few to no taxis in town, you will be walking with your luggage up that hill.

I suppose there are worse ways to sustain the mundane. Although much nearer the water and more exposed to the elements we essentially saw the same spectacular scenery that we gasped at on the way in (oh and back out again courtesy of NCL and 23 hours of daylight). We listened on headphones to an English language version of a tale about the area which was mildly informative and largely based on a story of a lady who left here to find love, brought her husband back to her home and he was so enthralled but asked her how she could leave such a beautiful place, so they stayed there and lived happily ever after. The tour lasted exactly its time. Nature alone gets 5 stars. I'm an old cynic at times. You'll be fleeced here regardless of how you pay to see these fjords. I'd have been satisfied with the views from NCL sailing in and out but the itch for a small boat tour apparently had to be scratched. I was just pleased we didn't have to pay to use the on board restroom.

For the third…read moreweek we found this hotel near Ålesund and decided to take a chance since we hadn't heard much about it. It turned out to be a hidden gem - literally the highlight of our trip. I was worried it might be too remote, however there is so much to see in this area, our 6 night stay was too short. The hotel itself is simply one of the nicest I've stayed in. The wonderful staff and general manager Benthe make you feel like guests invited into their cozy home. The chefs are amazing with a different gourmet 4 course meal every night. The location, the people, the accommodations (and the homemade cookies) were all truly exceptional!! (Ps. This is the first time I've ever bothered to post on Yelp - I was so impressed!)

Such a mix of good and bad!…read more The good: Beautiful old historic building with elegant lobby, beautifully appointed restaurant and views to die for. They have a museum of 10 huge, historic cars from 1918 to the mid 1930's. They have a wonderful outside pool, overlooking the Fjord. All of the public spaces are 10 out of 10. The bad: I get it; it's an old historic hotel, but that doesn't excuse these blunders when it comes to the hotel room. They have NO backup roll of toilet paper. This is an issue when you run out! Also, we ran out of tissues. No back up. There were no drinking glasses in the bathroom, or in the room (only a coffee cup). The one window swing open from the bottom, but won't stay open. I had to use a coffee stirrer to prop it open. The only USB port in the room were wobbly wall mounts and I found didn't charge my phone overnight. There are NO live outlets that aren't switched off will wall switches, which mean no charging from then unless you leave the wall switch on and turn the lamps off manually. Also, all power is lost when remove your key card, so no charging when you leave the room. No paper or open to make notes. Most if these oversights have nothing to do with being an old hotel. They obviously have pride for the hotel and public spaces, nut put little effort into room usability.

The restaurants are good, a little pricey, but very good. There is a car museum in the basement that is free to check out, and I recommend if you're in the area you should definitely take a peek.
