Northwest Orthopedic Surgery - Before and after...no more pain!

After three surgeries from two doctors in this group, I'm fully qualified to review their practice…read more My first surgery was by Dr. Tingle, who repaired a torn (shredded) rotator cuff. I saw several other orthopedic doctors over the years who misdiagnosed the problem. Rehab only made it worse. When I was referred to Dr. Tingle, he did a CAT Scan and saw a small tear. We scheduled the surgery, and he found the tendon had completely torn off the shoulder. Their surgeries are done in the Outpatient Surgical Center at Northwest Community Hospital. The recovery from this kind of surgery is long and painful. It's been over seven years, and I almost have full motion back to that arm. In fairness, I was very flexible, so I have better than 100% of a normal range of motion, but I can't quite reach where I used to be. I started having problems with my feet a couple of years ago. Bunions were growing on both feet. They were tolerable until they were not. Dr. Abraham works on feet, and I saw him at the beginning of 2022. I had surgery on my left foot in March. He warned me that the big toe was very arthritic, and he wasn't sure how much ligament was left. If it was bad, he said he might need to fuse the toe. If not, he would ease arthritis and correct the bunion. He suggested that if he felt the fusion was needed during the surgery, he would stop so we could discuss it. I did not want two surgeries on the same foot, so I told him to fuse it if it had to be fused. That's what happened. After I had two days of pain, then another. Six weeks in a boot with the ability to start driving again in two weeks was amazing. Two weeks after not using the boot, I went on an active trip to Ireland, which involved walking, hiking, claiming, and bicycling. and more. Aside from some expected swelling, I had no pain. It was great. When we returned, we scheduled the right foot in October. This was my dominant foot and my driving foot, so this would be personally problematic. The surgery went very well, and fusion wasn't needed. This time, a full eight weeks in the boot, plus two more just in case. I was able to drive at six weeks, What I find best about this practice are two things: (1) everyone on their staff is nice, attentive, and caring - from the front desk staff to the nurses and doctors, and even billing. (2) Their aftercare is second to none. Both Doctors always had time to talk, to see me if needed, and to ensure we had appointments scheduled until I would be released. While I hope I'll never have to revisit them, it is only since I hope I never need orthopedic surgery again. After a lifetime of activity and osteoarthritis, I'll likely return. After being released this morning, I learned that Dr. Abraham is retiring. He's giving up his practice to work full-time at the VA Hospital. What a mensch!

I was a bit concerned when I read the one other review about him. I'm glad I went forward. Mom had her last appointment with him today. He was very caring...she has dementia and he allowed for that in all of his visits with her. Very patient. Because she couldn't stand at her first follow-up appointment, he wrote a script so she could get an x-ray at the rehab facility. He was cautious with his recommendations re weight-bearing, his follow-up appointments were right on time (nice, considering we had to use a Medi-Van. His staff was courteous and professional. Therefore, I'm adjusting my review for fairness. Overall, as a provider, Dr. Papierski is great. He's very knowledgeable. He nursed my injured hand back to well health (almost there) following a lawnmower incident at my home over 2 months ago. He's very professional with timing and has been quick and efficient with every procedure I've had at his office from suture removal to a surgical procedure to surgical pins removal. My only gripe with this office is with his professional staff (medical staff has been pleasant and helpful). However, his professional staff is another story. Schedulers have scheduled me prematurely for visits that I now view as a "waste" as I have to pay more $$ for those visits (the reason for my previous review) and the biller is hard to get in contact with to resolve billing issues. If you can deal with his whack professional staff, Dr. Papierski is a great doc!

Part of it was due to my insurance and where I actually live. I split time between Chicago and Tennessee. It would have helped coordinating the follow up before the surgery. When we walked into your office, we knew that we were in for a long wait given that the waiting room was so full there were not even chairs enough for both of us to sit, but we hoped for the best. Come an hour after our appointment time, we still had not been seen and the waiting room had seen very little movement. I heard the receptionist speaking in Spanish to another patient, and could discern enough to know she was asking if the patient could come back tomorrow. That was when I knew there was probably no hope of being seen anytime soon. So we asked the receptionist how many people were ahead of my husband, and she politely told us that there were three or four ahead of us, confirming my suspicion. The receptionist asked us if we would like to schedule him another appointment the next day, but we, of course, declined. We grabbed his forms and walked out. After all, why would we come back to risk another day of sitting around without being seen? The epidemic of doctors' offices running late has almost become the norm, and I regularly expect to wait around thirty minutes to be taken back to a room. This expectation being the norm is in and of itself a real problem, but what your office did to us is outrageously disrespectful. Had we actually waited around to see you, given the flow (or lack thereof) of the waiting room, I seriously question whether we would have even been seen two hours after his scheduled appointment. Like you, most of us have jobs, and in order to come to the doctor we take time away from those jobs or just end up having to allocate time later in the evening that would otherwise be spent with family to catch up on missed time for jobs that are not your regular "9 to 5." Beyond the fact that we may be missing work to see you, our time is otherwise valuable, and certainly no less valuable than yours. I understand emergencies come up in practicing medicine, and while I cannot necessarily think of any that would come up in ortho I'm sure they happen. But regardless, keeping us waiting as long as you did is likely not a product of emergencies, but simply poor planning and overbooking. I hope as you move forward you will consider the value of your patients' time and practice better time management. At the very least, you could consider asking the receptionist to let patients know that there is a large delay so that they could simply come later rather than waiting around."
