A few tips and tricks for those visiting: They ask you leave your backpacks and purses downstairs in the provided lockers. The elevator system isn't great, and will always stop at the lobby, no matter what you push, so it's a time consuming process to use it. The restrooms look like they should be pull doors, but they're actually push. It's the oddest thing and the honey and I were both tripped up by it. Overall, we both really enjoyed the museum, much more than the famous Prado, and would highly recommend stopping in if you're visiting Zurich, especially if it happens to be a Wednesday.

My expectations were met and I was able to see the exact sort of art that I absolutely love. The galleries are spacious enough that you can get as close to or as far from the art as you like. The audio guide (free! sanitized!) was easy to carry and listen to without being a struggle. Marc Chagall, Joan Miró, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Gaugin is my favorite sort of art. And then I enjoyed van Gogh's Roses, a Monet lighthouse, an early Picasso portrait, a Munch crowd, a Bonnard landscape and so much more. The museum also has a "Swiss Painting before 1800" gallery that engrossed me. Lots to see and you can expect to spend at least two hours touring the exhibit halls and getting just a little bit lost. The gift shop was very good and I'm happy with the prints I bought though I would have loved to see more of the art in relatable sizes. Not everyone has room for a full sized poster at home. The main pedestrian route leading to the museum has 180 stairs next to an uphill cobblestone road. Not sure if the road is wheelchair accessible. You would not want to climb these stairs when covered with ice in the winter! Museum has tons of exhibits on insects, mammals, reptiles, fish, and extinct animals. One exhibit features a full size mastodon of the stone ages, while another shows a modern day narwhal with a huge pole like tusk. Modern day armadillo versus an ancient armadillo ten times as large, the size of a refrigerator. Lots of interactive displays, especially for the insects, with magnifying gasses. To get the most out of it, you have to understand German. Clean and free bathrooms, unlike some places in Switzerland which charge the equivalent of a $1 to use, and a cafeteria. Great views of Zurich and the river from the university where the museum is located. Oh, and make sure the brakes on the wheelchair for granny are functioning, when going downhill on that block long cobblestone road!

I think I would be screaming too if I was a kid and seeing all these huge specimens and models of animals. If you do want some peace and quiet, going to the lower level might be an option. The specimens looks so life like and I did have a "Night in the Museum" moment. Worth dropping by if you need a time out as one cannot eat and drink the whole day!

Yelp Review 2026 #53:…read more My first visit to Fraumunster, I didn't even bother going in. I just took pictures of the 4 iconic and most photographed churches in Zurich. I revisited Zürich recently and this time, I checked out the Marc Chagall windows. As an art history buff, I owed myself a visit here even though Chagall isn't my favorite. He's a very important part of art history. He's known for his use of bold and vivid use of colors. He dabbled in painting, stained glass, ceramics, set design, etc. Other notable stained glass creations in Fraumunster include those by Heston, and Giacometti. It costs 5CHF (at time of writing) to enter - which is cheap by Swiss standards. You can't buy tickets in advance or online. Be sure to check their hours. There's a small crypt museum which was only opened to the paying public after renovations in 2016. There's a lot of text to read to learn more about the church. An excerpt: "The Fraumünster was founded in 853 by King Louis "the German", a grandson of Charlemagne. The royal abbey was built on a site which had still been flooded by Lake Zurich until not long before. According to the founding legend, the king doubted whether the location was suitable, whereupon a rope descended from the heavens to mark the construction site, a sign which allayed Louis' concerns."

No. There are about 4-5 different stained glass windows and while it's very relaxing and unique to a degree, there just isn't much to see and the air quality really isn't great. All in all, if you're in the area, have 10 minutes to spare, and don't mind the fee I'd say go for it, but otherwise (especially if you have allergies) you're not missing much by skipping it.

Now you're talking…read more Met at 11am on a Monday when all the museums were closed, at the Credit Suisse in the Paradeplatz, one of the world's most expensive and exclusive shopping areas. Must have been at least 100 people there. Fortunately about 20 peeled off for the Spanish speaking tour. Julian was our guide, a great story teller with an abundance of jokes. At the Fraumünster church, we discovered tiny hieroglyphics carved into the stones. This was to keep track of which artisan packed which stones into the structure, for pay purposes. We stop by a statue of a burgermeister, condemned to death not for killing dogs, but for raising taxes! We wander through St Peter Church - one of the four main churches in Zurich whose clock face is the largest in all of Europe; We check out the restaurant where famous painters as Picasso, Chagall, Giacometti paid for their food with their own paintings. The restaurant owners sold the paintings right away, instead of keeping them until they appreciated in value. Next, we check out the house where Lenin was living before returning to Russia, leading the 1917 revolution. We go along the Limmatquai with many buildings dating from the days of the rich Guilds that governed Zurich. We wander through the Lindenhof and Roman Baths - the historical site of a Roman castle situated on a hillside, with great views of Old Town. Did you know that Albert Einstein and 20 Nobel Prize winners were students at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology? At the end of the 2 hour free tour Julian poses with a group for Facebook picture under "Free walk Zurich", passes out postcards with the logo, and collects tips, once again at the Paradeplatz. With 100 people, and an average of CHF3 per tip per person, Julian is a walking piggy bank, and takes no chances with his travel bag, now heavy with CHF bills. He walks only a few steps to make an in person deposit at the nearest bank! Or does he keep part of the stash hidden from the authorities?

We had such a blast getting to know more about such a beautiful city. The Old Zurich tour was much more crowded. Our guide was amazing. Explained a lot and told us great stories about the city. She even recommended a place for lunch which was delicious. The Zurich West tour was good, but not as great as the morning tour. Our guide was knowledgeable but we didn't feel like we learned as much. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone traveling to Zurich
