The owner is amazing. He said tell us if we didn't like something, we did, he took it off the bill. Sardines were delicious! The pork leg was also delicious. The pork ribs were not good, they tasted burned in every bite. He took it off the bill when the waiter asked why we didn't eat it. It's a small place, worth waiting for. It's right next to Belém Pastries. I highly recommend it, eat the sardines!!! read more

Pretty much the friendliest waitstaff I've ever encountered, and the food is really nice too. Prices are also great; a "half portion" of grilled sea bream will get you the entire fish, as well as rice and a salad, for about 8.30 euros. Went here for lunch with friends. This is a small/local place with a lot of ambiance. We have a variety of dishes from grilled sardines over pork chops to steak. The food was prepared to our specification and very tasty. This was a great treat for lunch. The place is busy and the service is good but they are VERY rushed. read more

This was my first experience with Portuguese cuisine. The restaurant itself is small, but cozy; the wait staff is exceptionally outgoing and friendly. While I was thrilled with the service, I was okay with my dinner .. but nothing more than that. I ordered the chicken with the spicy sauce, expecting it to come with more than just a bottle of spicy oil. Overall consensus was a bit bland and underwhelming. Why the ***? Service, for one, and to be honest .. it wasn't so uninteresting that I wouldn't return if invited by friends. Not going out of my way to return on my own though. read more

I had the best grilled sardines I have ever eaten anywhere, here, and I love grilled sardines. The place is small and everything looks like it is tightly fitted together, because it is. But don't come here for the ambiance, rather come for the great food coming off of the small charcoal grill in the front of the restaurant. Also, I found Carlos, the owner/host entertaining. He is fluent in several different languages. He switches from one language to another without any hesitation as he walks between tables addressing the clientele in his restaurant. He is friendly and a bit of a jokester. The tab on my soda can broke and he handed me a butter knife. I must have looked very puzzled because after a few seconds he burst into laughter and told the waiter to get me another can! He said that he just wanted to see my expression and didn't want me to stab the top of my can to open it! Besides the friendly and funny owner, I highly recommend the food here. No frills, simply prepared with the freshest ingredients Portuguese style cooking. read more

Os must stand for overcooked stuff. I can't imagine how this is the same place that has so many fine reviews. We have been in Portugal for almost a week - this was the only bad meal so far. Including bus station snack bars. The ham we had for starters was not sliced all the way through and was inferior to anything else we have had in Lisbon. We had to separate the slices by hand to be able to eat it on bread. The shrimp that came with my traditional Portuguese bread stew was cooked through until mushy. My son had a grilled meat dish that was like eating a piece of crunchy charcoal. Wife's dogfish soup was pretty good, but that was it. The service was ok, but not warm as we have experienced in other Portuguese restaurants. read more

Starving after a long day walking and looking at art in Belem we found this little place and it was almost empty. The owner greeted and seated us and handed us menus only to tell us that they mean nothing and he'd recommend cockles and some funny sounding fish I've never heard of. He promised if we didn't like it we wouldn't have to pay. He was very polite but kept talking and talking so my other half got a bit annoyed and stressed as he's not the biggest fish lover to start with. Eventually we are being left alone to read through the menu. My partner picked the national dish of Bacalhau which reminded me of the German dish 'Bratkartoffeln' which is fried potatoes, onion, bacon or ham, mixed with egg and in this case cod. It was very nice I thought. I went with the chef's recommendation of some white fish, could've been clown fish for all I know. It came out with a charred skin and was just lovely. My partner got a smaller piece of the same fish to try, curtesy of Os Jeronimos. Overall I like our meal, it was reasonably priced, nice if a little bland overall. Sadly, we were not able to order drinks at any stage as it was hard to get a word in edgewise and we weren't asked what we wanted either. This is a bit of a shame, really, therefore I'm giving 3 stars and not 4. read more

Delicious sardines and wonderful owner. He insisted we try the 'Espada' a deepwater fish that tastes like 'mouse'. We had already finished our meal when he brought out a complimentary fillet of Espada to try and tell him what we thought. Great meal and great people. read more

My wife and I ate at Restaurante os Jeronimos late on a busy Sunday afternoon. We ate at the counter because it was easy. The owner or manager came up to say hello and said that the entrees came with fries and salad, gratis. In addition, if we ordered the lamb and we did not like it, lunch would be no charge. So, my wife and I split the shellfish bisque soup and the lamb entree. We also had bread and cheese, plus two beers. The lamb was so tender it feel off the bone; it really was excellent! The owner/manager made sure we liked it and offered us a few more pieces, which we declined because we were too full. Pleasantly so! When we are in Belem, we will go back to Restaurante os Jeronimos. read more

I don't share the enthusiasm of other reviewers. Service was very friendly, but some of the food (pot au feu) was cold and some had probably been cooked long before it was served and wasn't all that tasty. This is Portugal, there are so many better alternatives. read more
