Kohler-Andre State Park: Originally named just Terry Andre State Park when it opened in the late…read more1920s, the park became Kohler-Andrae State Park in 1966 following a donation from the Kohler Company. The park is in the Town of Wilson, which is just south of Sheboygan. It features a plethora of wildlife, numerous campsites, the Sanderling Nature Center, majestic sand dunes, over two miles of golden beaches along the cool waters of Lake Michigan, The Black River Marsh Boardwalk, and whispering pines. My favorite part was the miles of hiking trails through the sandy dunes. A show titles "Wildlife of Wisconsin" was also neat in the Sanderling Nature Center. The presenter shared some interesting stories and also brought along some live animals, such as baby possums, falcon, and barn owl. It can be a little chillier in the park because of its proximity to Lake Michigan and the wetlands can cause an increase in mosquitos, so plan accordingly. Overall, it's a nice park within short driving distance of Milwaukee.

It continues to be a favorite spot for camping trips multiple times a year, but hot dang you have to book FAR in advance to get a site! I believe they allow you to book up to 11 months in advance, which seems crazy but trust me when I say you need to, especially for weekend or holiday dates. We camp with both an RV and tents, and are always in search of sites with electric as an option. My favorite is around the #89-92 area, but honestly you can't go wrong with most all of the sites. The grounds are extremely well-kept, and it's a delight to be tucked into the forest of trees. Tons of walking paths wind around this park too, including the beautiful dunes. Great to explore in all seasons. Various trails lead straight to Lake Michigan, where you'll find the sprawling beach of white sand. In the warm months, it's great to swim, and in the cooler months the beach is flat enough to take a nice long walk on or simply enjoy the ocean-like views. Other pros: plenty of parking for single-day visitors, a huge playground alongside the beach entrance, firewood and ice on site, an 'amphitheatre' area where events like weddings can be hosted, and it's very dog-friendly. There's nothing not to love at this gorgeous state park!

The last time I was here was probably 18 years ago and it has really changed. It seems like the…read moreeconomy has been hard on the area. A few of the buildings seem vacant and one looked like it was falling down. My little one asked me what happen to it...she told me it was about to crash down. She also believed the boat captains lived in all of the buildings by the water because they look like wood shanty's. I didn't have the heart to tell the truth so I went with it. It is fun to walk up the boardwalk because there are some great views of the river. You can also check out the fishing boats too. Some of the captains will talk to you because they are trying to drum up some business. It would be fun to go out and do some sport fishing but maybe on my next trip, hopefully it won't be another 18'years. There are also some great places to eat here too. My personal favorite is the Mucky Duck Shanty for a Sheboygan Brat. It is the best deal in the area for $3.95 with chips and slaw. A pint of beer is $2.50 and that's a normal price...no need for a fake happy hour here. There are also other places too for coffee, ice cream, burgers or brunch. Just search yelp when you get here because there are a ton of great reviews. There is also plenty of parking in the lot. If it's full then you will see two hour street parking for free. There is also a bathroom at the north end of the pier but it is open seasonally. So if it's summer you are in luck but in winter you may be denied. If your passing through Sheboygan then stop on in. It is only about 3 miles off the main highway and you will have a great time too.

We booked an 8 hour charter with our 3 kids. Captain and Cody were very welcoming and informative but not stifling with forced conversations. We caught 2 fish pretty quickly and then there was a lull for a few hours .......... no nibbles ...... Captain Darren and Cody tried VERY hard to help catch fish ( trying different lures, etc...) and they were stumped why they weren't biting. My husband and I really appreciated their efforts and we were all having fun nonetheless. Then my husband went into our cooler and offered everyone a banana. Cody and Darren exchanged glances and shook their heads. They told us bananas are bad luck for fishing. My husband and I had a real good laugh at this superstition and ate all the bananas and tossed out the peels. Ten minutes later, my son caught a King Salmon, and then another, and another - 6 fish pretty quickly! Darren and Cody were great helping the kids reel them in. Long story short: Captain Darren and Cody were wonderful and tried hard to make this a great experience for our family and they SUCCEEDED! Fish or no fish, we all had fun! No fish for the first hour or two, but David is so knowledgable about Lake Michigan and the Sheboygan area, we learned a ton. And suddenly, we had a hit! Nothing gets your blood pumping like taking the rod in your hands and wrangling with a huge coho salmon. What an experience! We ended the day with three beautiful fish and a slight sunburn (bring sunscreen). The best part? David and crew clean and filet the fish on the dock! We went home with dinner ready to cook. In Sheboygan, Playing Hooky is a 'must.'
