We worked with Tim Jr. and Nathan from Outerland today for mulching and routine lawn maintenace. They were extremely professional and courteous and warm. The company is organized, responsive and you don't have to chase them down. They charge slightly more for their services compared to other companies we considered ($75 vs $60 for maintenance) but they seem to pass that money along to their employees - as the employees are well trained and well mannered! Stay away from Outerland. Top dollar prices and low level quality. Meghan does not deliver, disorganzied comes to mind. Requested services go unattended... I waited until middle August for flowers that I ordered in April. I missed more than half of the season and paid the same price. Plantings are inferior. When you read the description for this company and they come out and sell you on how they only send experts who are very experienced and knowledgeable, beware that nothing could be farther from the truth. They are very expensive, but we decided to give them a try since Meghan, our rep with Outerland, was good at selling us on the high level of service by professional, highly educated gardeners They will only work on an ACH basis so they have the ability to draw money from your bank account. As per the proposal, we were to have a scheduled "Spring Clean Up" between March & May. This included (amongst other things), dethatching the lawn, edging and weeding all beds. We arrived at our cape home on June 10th to find nothing done. While Outerland had continued to make all the ACH withdrawals on schedule, they did not complete the spring clean up (detaching, edging or weeding). We were extremely disappointed because we had only agreed to work with Outerland with their high prices because we were expecting our landscaping to look spectacular. When we called Meghan, she told us that the lawn had been detached. We sent pics and had her come out, and she agreed that it was not done. She then told us that the machine was not working properly. (Now, if you have highly skilled people, I assume that they can see that the machine is not picking up anything, and the lawn is still full of thatch). So Meghan had someone come out again in July to dethatch. Once again, there was no difference - apparently the machine was still broken. Since there is so much thatch on the lawn, we are paying for lawn treatments/fertilization that isn't very effective since it doesn't get into the soil as well due to the thatch. A group of Outerland people came out in mid-June and started the spring clean up. In the meantime, Outerland had been charging us for 2 gardeners/2 hours every other week starting in May. When I mentioned it was expensive, and that Meghan had promised that we would have very highly skilled labor who knew everything about their job, we are talking $91.75/per hour/per person. That is not a mistake - we were charged $367 every other week for two people for two hours. Since spring cleaning included weeding, we feel that we shouldn't be paying for the gardeners ($91.75) to be weeding until after the spring cleaning is completed which was supposed to include the weeding of all beds. Outerland was charging us for the gardeners to weed while it was supposed to be included in the spring clean up. If there were additional weeds since they got to it so late, that is their problem, not ours. On July 26th, I had returned to our house (after being away for a few days) to find that the gardener had trimmed many bushes that were not to be trimmed (or at least not into a shape), but more a free form to go with our landscaping. Our boxwoods in the front of our house were already very small, and they were trimmed. I preferred the rounded shape they were, and didn't want them trimmed straight or trimmed at all. I had ilex plants in my two container pots next to my front door, and was surprised to see they had been trimmed into a rounded shape, small bushes on the side of our yard, that I was using to cut for branches to bring inside, were now trimmed into an oval, and last of all one side of our entrance gate had a tree trimmed into an oval shape, and the other side wasn't trimmed at all. Meghan was supposed to bring ferns to our house to replace the ilex that were ruined with the trimmer, but never did. It is now, January, and Outerland wants to bring two boxwoods to replace the plants in my front pots. (This is a summer home so we are not there during the winter). While these expert $91.75/hour gardeners were spending their time ruining our landscaping and trimming things that didn't need to be trimmed, we had weeds all over the front area of the house. This was extremely frustrating as we are being charged for work that we didn't want done, and looked ridiculous, while there were weeds everywhere. Apparently, they enjoyed trimming. In December 2022, Outerland made a trip to our house, and luckily we had a Ring camera at the gate as we discovered that an Outerland employee had made major damage to our white painted gate as she drove into our property. The person got out of her truck, went and looked at the damaged gate, and we heard nothing from Outerland. I am guessing that if we didn't have the video from the Ring camera, they would have denied that they had done the damage. We have written several emails including photos) addressing all of these issues requesting explanations, refunds, etc. We had one outstanding invoice for them for some bushes and trees to be removed for $974 that we told them we wouldn't pay since they owed us so much money. They feel that is all we should get. Outerland has incompetent staff, do terrible work, and will continue to withdraw money from your bank. read more

It isn't often that a homeowner can have a front lawn restored that has been subject to erosion and ground sinking. I challenged Chris at Maffei Landscaping to do just that. His team was faced with restoring a ten square yard area of my front lawn that had seen three trees removed years ago. The ground had sunk due to the old stumps decaying and water erosion during storms turned my front yard into an ugly uneven hazard for my lawnmower. Maffei sent a crack team of technicians and within hours restored my eyesore to what has to be considered the 19th Hole of the local golf course. 100 percent coverage of the bad area was accomplished with the plushest, healthiest green grass you will ever see on Cape Cod. Kudo's to the work team adn my thanks to Chris for making me a believer in restoration work, particularly if it is done by Maffei Landscaping! read more

I came across the review from Patti B. quite by accident looking for a landscape company. I was compelled to chime in....I had almost exactly the same experience! i originally hired Maffei (who were fabulous) but they sold to Outerland and it went bad from there. This review (and I note others) is quite correct. You will NOT get experts, Meghan will NOT meet with you (we had an appointment and she never showed and did not even have the courtesy to call), they will NOT listen to you about how you prefer your landscaping, will prune when they should not (because no one knows), the weekly maintenance is a joke....my people just stood out there and raked up and threw away the mulch. I thought they were high. In the fall the dug up all my ground over. As with another reviewer, they broke my gate, left it open on multiple occasions (I have a dog). They tried one to get the riding mower into the back yard because they apparently can't determine by looking or measuring that there is no way it would fit. In doing this, they scratched the side and both doors of my new car (too lazy to ask me to move it...at which point I could have told them the riding mower wouldn't fit). The billing an accounting department is almost laughable if you weren't so upset dealing with them. You can TRY to call but it won't take long to determine it does no good. They routinely ignore the schedule so your spring cleanup is in June and your Fall cleanup is after it snows. They are expensive but, as others, I tried. Even with the mandatory auto withdrawal (there's a big fee if you do not do it), they do not honor their part of your contract. I tried to resolve and go nowhere. if I could have given them a ZERO, I would have. listen to the reviews....wish I had. read more

It is December 28th and we are still waiting for our fall cleanup. When I called to check the beginning of December I was told that it would be done after December 18th, "after they had taken care of their commercial customers". Still waiting. Bob Maffei is a thief. I attempted to use Maffei for 3 landscape projects. During the first project a piece of equipment blew a hydraulic line killing a golf cart sized spot in my yard and tracking hydraulic oil all the way down my driveway. The crew said nothing about it. Just loaded up a left like nothing happened. After I called and protested they fixed it. 5 weeks later! I tried to use them again on a large project. They told me the project would move quickly through conservation approval process and would be completed within 3 months. We had a contract and I gave a deposit for 3000. Turns out we were required to do more engineering and surveying and we also had to file a notice of intent. Process was going to take At least 6 months for approval alone. I was furious. Maffei Landscape had to be aware of how long it would take for approval. Bob Maffei himself refused to return my deposit. I spent over a hour on the phone with him trying to get my deposit back. After months of this Bob Maffei finally returned Half my deposit and told me the other half would have to be used on Maffei services. Fine, whatever, except when I called to use the credit the company wouldn't allow me to use it. In other words Maffei landscape through their own incompetence messed up a pretty substantial project and then tried to steal my $3000 deposit. And only begrudgingly returned half my deposit when I threatened legal action. Hey Bob if you are reading this you know who I am and you have my number. Return the remainder of my money and I'll take this post down. If you fail to do the right thing I will continue to tell this 100 percent truthful story to every website that allows me to post a review. read more

Update- I'm pleased to say that Bob Maffei took responsibility, listened to us, and sent a crew to address our concerns. The crew that showed up were very responsive and fixed the punch list. There is a saying on the Cape that it is hard to find good help. At least with this crew, Bob has solved that problem. read more

My husband and I moved to the Cape this Spring from another state. We inherited a lovely yard that requires a lot of care. I cannot thank Maffei enough for helping us maintain this beautiful property. Each one of their workers have gone above and beyond each time they have serviced our yard. We are delighted with their service, advice and responsiveness. I am a dedicated gardener myself but the growing season and soil are quite different from our previous home. I have had fun talking to several of the gentlemen from Maffei and getting their advice on things that proliferate ( hydrangeas and hostas) here. A special shout out to Chris and Ben(?)
