Wow! What a wonderful, sweet treat! We came by on labor day with the family to try out this ice cream parlor, and I was BEYOND impressed. The store was clean, well decorated, and just plain adorable. The girl working that day was super helpful and knowledgeable, and was patient with our large, indecisive group. The ice cream was SO GOOD. It was creamy and delicious, and was the perfect afternoon treat. Our family's favorite was the banana ice cream. You can taste that they use real bananas! It was creamy and sweet without being overly "in your face" like some fruit flavored ice creams can be. I had a scoop of the cookie monster and a scoop of the happy wife. The combination definitely made me a happy wife indeed! I love that they give little "toppers" of another flavor when you order! This is such a cute little place with yummy ice cream flavors. It has space inside plus a drive thru. The staff are very patient with the patrons. The ice cream is a super creamy hard pack. I can honestly say that this is some of the best ice cream I have ever tasted. I ordered the cherry jubilee and then they give you a mini bonus scoop of your choice on top...so I got the butter pecan. Holy smokes was that good! It is a real drive if you live in West Des Moines like I do but this ice cream is the real deal! I think I am thankful that I don't live too close or I would be there all the time!!! read more

Really good ice cream! Love the cookie dough ice cream in the sprinkle cone! Plus they put a little tiny scoop on top so it allows you to try a flavor without getting a lot of it. happy we found this place, the atmosphere is very cute and a great place to take the family. This was my first time here and I LOVE IT! The concept is super cute where with whatever scoop of ice cream you get everyone gets a baby scoop of an ice cream flavor of their choice right on top! If you like homemade ice cream that isn't soft serve this is the place to go. I especially like how you get a little bonus topper of another flavor of ice cream in addition to your usual scoop. Over the top has been a great ice cream provider for my family this year, but unfortunately we probably will not continue with their service due to their use of styrofoam. At first I didn't notice, but when my husband mentioned something it really occurred to me that they use a TON of styrofoam. I'm not sure if they're aware, but styrofoam is not degradable and horrible for the environment. They use styrofoam for all of their dishes, shake cups and drink cups. I understand it's really silly to stop getting ice cream from here due to their cups, but I care about the environment, and won't be back until they fix their cup situation. read more

Over the Top is by far one of the best ice cream shops I have ever encountered! They have a slew of delicious flavors and add a sampling of an additional flavor on top! My latest favorite flavor is Happy Wife, Happy Life. The seasonal Corn on the Cobb flavor was not for me. We make it a point to stop here every time we are in the area! read more

The server was very slow and didn't know the current line up of flavors. When I asked for three sculps she responded with, "you clearly don't read the sign it says "one, two and four" why can't you just sale me a one sculp and a two sculp and put it in one bowl? We found this place on Yelp and had to come try it. Two milkshakes, a banana split, and a single cone cost $19 and was very worth it. Probably some of the best ice cream I have ever had. We had a coupon for this place from the Visit Des Moines web site and it was not far from our route to Chicago, so we dropped in...and it was closed! We checked the web site and they didn't mention that they were closed Easter Sunday! Undaunted we tried again the following day...and it was closed! This time is was our fault since we had arrived about 20 minutes before they opened. Fortunately the woman inside that was opening up saw us drooling outside the door and graciously opened early for us! Inside the ice creams were displayed like gelato in open stainless steel tubs inside a refrigerated glass display case. They had 36 wonderfully displayed flavors that sounded great, so making a final choice was a problem. This was solved by tasting all the contenders in my top ten list. (Fortunately we were the only customers so no one had to wait through our sampling bout.) The ice cream flavors were all creamy and flavorful without an artificial taste. All the ice creams and sorbets are made here daily and you can taste the quality! I had a cup of Coconut Almond Delight and Cherry Amarretto. The surprise was that on your ice cream order they put a melon-ball sized scoop of another flavor on top (hence the name "Over the Top") for you to try! (I had "Twisted Sister".) This was a wonderful find and a must visit for any ice cream aficiondo! read more

This is my first review on this app and it definitely is worth it. Last night was my family's first time in the store and we were so impressed! The ice cream was amazing and the "topper" was a cute addition. What was even better than the ice cream was the great staff. The two young girls working, Haley and Mccayla (we asked their names) were amazing with helping us. This is the best ice cream I have had in the DSM metro to date. The flavors themselves are full of goodies, (Go on their website and check it out) and taste pretty amazing. Like others have stated, getting the small scoop on top is a great way to sample a flavor, and pretty much guarantees you are going to come back to get a full scoop of it. I ordered their version of a blizzard with the Knee Deep in Chocolate ice cream and Oreos. It was tremendous. We will be back to try more ice cream goodness. Service is also excellent. read more

This is our favorite ice cream spot on the East side. All flavors taste exactly like they should. The Black Raspberry tastes just like a black raspberry! First of all, it was so beautiful from the outside that I just stood and stared. Inside, everything was picture perfect. From the signs to the decor. The ice cream was terrific and not too highly priced. Everything was made on the premises. I had to ask the owner if it was a chain because it was so great looking - it isn't, but I'm betting that it could be someday. They also have fudge and candy. AWESOME. read more
