Steve is a United Airlines pilot who works most of the week, but on the weekends (Friday - Sunday), he likes to fly his open cockpit biplane. he has over 25 years of experience so you're in very capable hands and he is super nice. What is an open cockpit biplane? It is exactly what you think it is...it is open so you feel the wind in your face and your hair and it fits 2 people. You get to sit in front and yes, you get to wear a helmet with goggles like in WWI. Don't worry about keeping your hair in place, the helmet will do that for you. It can be a little difficult to find the hanger at first, but his hanger number is 8000-6 but if you don't see it, you'll definitely "Tillie" the plane. She is a beautiful bright orange and yellow. You can tell that she is Steve's pride and joy because she looks brand new and everything is very clean. The highlight of this adventure definitely has to be when he lets you fly the plane over Mesa Street area. I did a 360 turn and what an adrenaline trip. It felt like being on a gentle roller coaster ride. I loved every minute of it! Then he took over and did a few tricks where you get to experience what 2G force feels like. Best ride ever. For $195, you get a full 45 minutes in the sky which is a long time. He even offers a DVD of your experience for $15 which captures your expressions. I didn't get this addition but I was sorely tempted to. I brought my camera with me instead and got a ton of great pictures from over 6000 feet in the air.

Chalk the Block happens once a year in October and every year that I've loved it. I think there is…read morea lot of room for CTB to grow so who knows what it will look like in a few years, but as it stands it should be on your list of "things to do in El Paso". This year we decided to go early morning on Saturday which I think is a really good idea if you want to beat the heat. I think we ventured to just about every booth and I was really impressed by the range of vendors. Everything from clothes to sweets to paintings to salsa to face painting. I did pick up a few things here and there. There were at least twenty food trucks, but only a handful of the big dogs (shout out to Sweet Addiction!) which makes me wonder... if they have only a select space for the food trucks how are they selecting them (or is it first come first serve) and what kind of fees are they charging them. I went to two different food trucks that I've never heard of and both left me disappointed... also both charged me two dollars to use a debit card even though they were using Square. Moral of the story, bring cash or be extremely choosy when it comes to the food vendors at CTB (even the other vendors I talked to were shocked that I was charged for using a debit card). Okay so the chalk... you'll find both professionally drawn works and the regular Joe type. All are fascinating to look at and they always have a competition. Those are the pieces you really want to check out. Along with chalk art, CTB always has other forms of art including live performances. This year one of the things I really loved was the moving fire breathing dragon. I didn't get to see it at night which would've been amazing, but seeing it during the day in all it's glory definitely wasn't a let down. Cannot wait until next year's CTB. Great for kiddos, families, and adults alike. It's a lot of fun and there's so much to see. And it doesn't hurt that you can also add the Museum of Art and the Museum of History to your adventure.

The work put into these concrete canvases is truly marvelous. Not to worry, there are opportunities for the average joe to showcase his skills too. As you walk the streets you can grab chalk and go to town. Of course, in good old El Paso fashion there were plenty of local vendors selling their wares; sweets, shirts, pillows, crochet creations, cds, trinkets and whatnots. The food truck circus had an area too. Not your popular food trucks, some of the up and coming guys. Here is where my 5th star was lost. I wish it were more of the popular ones. The food from these trucks were sub-par, plus they taxed the heck out of you for using a credit card. $2!!! The regular vendors didn't upcharge you 2bucks, only the food trucks. The service was very slow too. CTB is a family friendly event. Bring comfy shoes, imagination and some cash. Have a great time.

I don't even know where to start this review... simply put, this is one of the most fun 5Ks I've…read moreever done! Unlike most people, I don't carbo-load or even train before 5Ks so on the day of the race I'm usually just praying that I don't pass out half way through. This is the joy of a fun 5K! There are some fun runs where you feel compelled to run the entire time, but with giant bounce house obstacles every 400-800 meters, just about everyone walks at one point or another. The very first obstacle is the start line. You have to quickly climb up to the top because there is a fear of being trampled (I kid, I kid... there's honestly no rushing getting up this obstacle). On the other side you slide down, but the material isn't as slide-y as the large slides. I think that had something to do with the fact that most people throw themselves off this obstacle so it counter balances their momentum and makes it more of a bounce instead of a fall-to-your-death. I kind of twisted my ankle hopping off of this one because I didn't realize that the drop is about two feet to the bottom. I was still able to continue to run though. The next obstacle was a mattress something or other which is kind of similar to what you see football players do with old tires. Think high knees! I struggled on this one, but it seemed like a lot of people did. Even if you fall, it's still a lot of fun and you won't get hurt at all. After that I was basically counting down the obstacles left because I was getting hella tired (and that was only about 400 meters in). Everything else is a blur to me... but what I can tell you is there were a lot of giant balls being thrown at my head, climbing inflatable stairs, and throwing my body over inflatable tubes. The volunteers along the way were super motivating and cheered on all the runners along the way. With the mix of obstacles and the Insane Inflatable cheerleaders those 3.1 miles went faster then I imagined. I only have two gripes with the entire race and they're small ones. 1. There's a long wait at the 6 story slide finish line. They may need to add a couple of harder obstacles toward the end to help separate people because we caught up to the wave before us. And 2. I wasn't in love with the vendors available. It was actually kind of slim pickings. They could've had a lot more food trucks on hand. I did see the Craze food truck so major points for that. I loved the race! And they had medals at the finish line - participation medals, but medals none the less. I really can't wait until next year! It was tons of fun and I know they'll be adding new obstacles!

However, big, inflatable obstacles sounded super fun, so I figured "Why not?" Glad I did. The obstacles were extremely fun, and just enough to challenge me without killing me! Athletes of all levels and ages were represented and all seemed to have plenty of fun! My time slot was 0900, glad I didn't put it off any later, because the groups got bigger and bigger. Overall I ended up being the first female to finish from my time slot and 6th overall! I had a great time and I'll definitely be on the lookout for the next time it comes to town!

The 2016 Sun City Bacon Festival really improved over 2015's, kudos…read moreto the organizers, and frankly to me, I deserve kudos for my honest and helpful review, so give me some darn kudos! (I suppose Tanya also deserves some amount of kudos, but I don't plan on sharing mine, GET YOUR OWN KUDOS!) Kudo politics aside, this year's festival just felt way better planned, there were more local restaurants participating with a plethora of creative bacony treats, and there didn't seem to be shortages like last year. The lines were way better managed, I think that using the piggybucks tokens really helped expedite transactions, plus we didn't experience the cash only nightmare of 2015. My favorites this year were the Bacon-wrapped wings from Crave, and the Maple Bacon Bread Pudding from Ode Brewery (that one was so good it actually did run out), plus Cabo Joe's 3 little piggies came back from last year, yum! Brass Monkey's bacon grilled cheese was not too shabby either. They also moved the stage which helped keep the noise from overwhelming you while you explore the festival, and they had more merch available, I even got a sweet piggy nose! I'm really glad that the festival improved, I am pro-Bacon and I'm not ashamed to admit it, but hopefully the organizers will not rest in their laurels and make it even better in 2017, and I'll be here ready to claim my rightful share of kudos.

If this does truly become an annual event I'd love to see a whole lot more thought go into Baconfest and what it actually is. I'm glad I went because I do enjoy supporting events like this and showing that there is an interest for such an event in the area. Next year I would like to see a whole lot more. One of the biggest issues I had with this event was the vagueness. There was no website set up for Baconfest... sure they posted an article about it on the KLAQ website, but there was really no where for anyone to really find answers to some pretty important questions (i.e. What time is this event over?). They had a Facebook event page set up, but not a Facebook page and again it didn't answer any real questions people might have. The markup basically said: The event starts at 11 AM, there will be bacon, there will be a costume contest, and there will be a hog calling contest. It didn't tell you what time the event was over, if you could bring pets (it turned out you couldn't, but since that wasn't blatantly apparent I did see many dogs at the event), how do you enter the contests, what time are the contests at, who's bringing the bacon, what different variations of bacon will there be, what other vendors will be at the event, and what kind of just-for-fun things will be at this event? Finishing this review would just be easiest by answering those questions... so here goes. What time is the event over? 5 PM. There were even vendors that were asking patrons what time the event was over. Literally no one knew. Can you bring pets? They said 'no', but they didn't have anyone manning any of the access points or security for that matter so do as you please. I regret not bringing my little Charlie because she truly believes bacon is LIFE. How do you enter the contests? This still isn't incredibly clear to me, but it had to be done at the event (yup, there was no online form to sign up anywhere). I'm actually assuming it was either at the stage or at the Baconfest tent selling shirts. What time are the contests? Whenever they call them over the speakers on the stage so stay close to the stage if you're trying to enter something. The contests I saw only had about four people in them so chances of winning are high! Who's bringing the bacon? They literally never released a complete list of vendors. The only thing they listed were the restaurants that actually fell inside the bounds of the event. No duh! They had "VIP" available at The Garden that included three different bacon starters and two drinks (very vague though... what kind of bacon starters and drinks?). There were actually quite a few foodtrucks at the event like Sweet Addiction, Crave, and Sloppy Seconds that received absolutely no recognition or promotion prior to the event. What different variations of bacon will there be? Nope, they never even told you if Crave was just making regular bacon or bacon wrapped shrimp. They were making bacon wrapped shrimp (which was my favorite). There was also chocolate covered bacon (two different varieties... the price on one was a little high though), bacon sugar cookies, pork belly hush puppies, caramel bacon cashew marshmallow praline, waffle bacon, bacon pizza, bacon sushi, BLT sushi rolls, pork belly on a stick and more. What other vendors will there be? Not many unfortunately and the vendors that didn't have a bacon product didn't even do anything bacon related. Are you kidding me?! Can I get some bacon costumes or something? There was one vendor selling salsa. They were also giving samples, they could've easily served their salsa samples on top of a small slice of bacon. There was a lady selling body wraps... we're at Baconfest, we don't care about our figure right now. I think at most there was six other vendors, but they didn't even seem that involved in the event. What kind of just-for-fun things will be at the event? Other than the free photobooth, nothing. Literally, nothing. Sadly it was just a lot of shuffling from one long line to the next. I would've liked to see some game booths, a jumping balloon for kids, a bacon mascot that people would've tried to take pictures with... anything that could've broken up the lines a little bit and enticed me to stay after having my fill of bacon related products. It just felt like if you weren't eating bacon, it was time to go. Again, I'll go next year... I would just like to see more organization, not something that someone slapped together. There really is no excuse. It may have been executed in a month, but it could've been done better and honestly, the rush to do it in a month was their own... the El Paso community was not demanding this event be done NOW so the sloppiness falls on the heads of the event organizers.

I took a free walking tour with Marcos, who helped create and has been leading the Last Thursday art tours for the last several years. The tour started at 6:30 from the central plaza/park in town, and we wandered around town for a good 2 hours or so. We got to see a bunch of cool art (I bought some neat stickers!), some music, and there were opportunities to buy food. My favorite part was learning about the interesting history and architecture of El Paso. I'm not an architecture buff, but those who are will probably be familiar with architect Henry Trost. He has a ton of neat buildings in El Paso, all very close together. I learned cool facts and trivia about El Paso on the tour that my friend who has lived there for 6 or 7 years doesn't even know! I highly recommend taking Marcos's Last Thursday tour!

This massive mural of a mountain lion is many stories high and adorns the One San Jacinto Plaza Building downtown. It's constructed of recycled trash, believe it or not! This colorful masterpiece was created by Portuguese artist Bordalo Segundo. Here is his quote: "We are destroying the world the habitat of the animals, we are also animals so I think we should think we are also destroying our own habitat." If you appreciate art or are just curious, you have to check this out! Life is great with unique art!
