I had a very disappointing experience with Owenby Law, P.A. Before my first meeting, I uploaded extensive requested documentation into their portal, including timelines, marriage information, and financial disclosures. Despite that, the attorney I initially met with appeared completely unprepared and had not reviewed the material beforehand. I was also required to travel to the Orange Park office instead of a closer location. Shortly after my initial consultation, I was informed that the attorney assigned to my case was no longer with the firm. I was then reassigned, but meetings were repeatedly rescheduled, including one that was changed the day before it was supposed to occur. The constant turnover, scheduling issues, and lack of preparation gave me very little confidence in the representation I was paying for. When I attempted to resolve the issue and request a refund, I felt dismissed rather than helped. Ultimately, I had to dispute the charges through my credit card company due to my concerns over the services provided versus what was charged. I retained this law firm for a paternity/custody battle with my ex. my son was only 2 months old at the time of the retainer being paid. My son is now 1 and nothing has been done and over $15k has been paid for them to push paper and ignore my requests. my ex filed a temporary needs motion and I was advised to cross motion, charged me $6k for the cross motion and we went to hearing, where my attorney showed up an hour late to our meet up time/10 minutes prior to our scheduled hearing time. she was not prepared nor did she have mine of my young son's best interest at heart. After the hearing, I wrote her an email expressing my disbelief of the hearing; how I felt like she was not prepared, knowledgeable enough, nor aggressive enough to plead my case. She wrote me back a week later saying that it is under her own discretion on how she goes about the case to ensure the tactic she uses will benefit us. Well, fast forward 2 weeks later, my abusive ex is getting 50/50 timesharing of my son whom he's never cared for a day of his life. I had witnesses, evidence, showing my cooperation and coparenting with this man and she allowed the other side to paint me as a bitter ex and bitter mother. my lawyer did not call on any witnesses on behalf of me nor did she even ask to present any evidence! Paid 3000$ to retain, not even a week and a half later was asking for more money and sending invoices, never even made it to court before the withdrawal because they run up your 3000$ retainer as quickly as possible so they can ask for more, already were asking for another 9000$ for court even though nothing was done whatsoever in the month retained beforehand. They will act caring to get you as a client, then charge you 80$ for you responding to any message they sent you, 475$ for a 10 minute phone call they made with the opposing attorney that did not actually matter or further anything whatsoever with the case. I retained Owenby Law in a very personal family matter basically removing my son from a very abusive household and getting custody of him. After a year and a half and $30,000 my attorney lost our court case for us, quit the firm and didn't have the decency to notify me and or handover my case to another attorney at the firm. After consultation with a senior attorney at Owenby Law, I was told that if I want to proceed with another attorney at the firm that they will do their best, and there will be fees. At the beginning they agree with you and treat you the right way. They charge hourly/email rates (when they choose to work) payment plans are offered for the many/unhelpful emails they send you. They do what they want which is almost nothing you request. When a request is made they speak about it for as long as they can ($$$) and majority of the time it's a "no". If you want to file things yourself and spend 1-2 years and more money than you can imagine this is the one for you. If you want a person to represent, fight, gather as much evidence as possible and actually care about custody they will tell you "no" and "I'm not going to do that" which is something that should not happen when spending as much money as you will. When they do say "no" on certain things it's "to save you money" you don't even get an attorneys number you have to call an office and set up an appointment which can take over a week. I hired this law firm back in 2020 to help with my divorce/ child custody case. I initially started with one attorney who was inexperienced but then they handed my case off to Nancy Sutton. She was the best attorney and pleased with the outcome. But then fast forward two years later and ex husband wants a change to the custody. I hired Owenby again thinking I had good results the first time. Big mistake! I got stuck with Lauren who didn't do anything for my case. Ended up not happy with the results and have been living in hell since the changes were made. Have to watch my son be emotionally abused by my ex husband and his family and don't know how to fix it. Does that sound threatening to you? That's what review sites are for so I'm not sure what she is suggesting but I will say now that I have retained an amazing attorney, her lack of communication that I first reviewed has become even worse. She has said we are duplicating efforts when she never communicated with us! We had to email her to find out if my dad's pool was being taken care of and didn't mention anything about the maintenance of the house in her response but yet we are the ones who need to communicate. She also recommended to my brother to change the locks on my deceased father's home before anyone was made personal representative although I had been going to that home every week to be there for my family yet my brother, who lives in CA, has been there three times in 10 years and the third was to come and take what he wanted. Who gives advise like that to people who are grieving? I will continue to review her because her unprofessionalism has taken away the ability to grieve. Her and her firm should be ashamed. Let's say I did my homework: I chose Owenby Law after a great deal of research. This is a law firm that knew about military divorce and did not charge a consultation fee. Some other firms to which I paid consultation fees to were only interested in eating up that fee during the hour with questions that were irrelevant or advice that was not sound. While Owenby Law did not charge a consultation fee, they do charge an hourly rate for any service that is done. This does get costly. However, they do offer a payment plan. When requesting an attorney, I wanted someone that would be reasonable to my opposing party and one that had a knowledge of military divorce. Nancy Sutton was assigned to my case. She was quite prepared for our processes (mediation), and she prepared me on what to expect as well. She also knew the costs of such paperwork in the courts. Pros: no consultation fee, knowledgeable about military divorce, takes the time to prepare you for processes, knows other attorneys in the field, knowledgeable about the divorce process in general. Once I hired Nancy, a weight was lifted from my shoulders. She helped me navigate the processes. The law firm does offer a payment plan. Cons: Costly, charges for every process (not a flat rate), contracted a server all the way from St. Johns County and was initially charged rates bc he was from out of the area. Was charged when my ex spouse contacted the firm. Was charged when the law office had to converse with the process server about my frustration of being charged bc this process server was coming from a different area (an hour and a half to where he was serving). There's a reason you do not see the same named attorneys in multiple reviews. There's also a reason Emily Cochran is no longer management, why Joy does not get involved in company affairs, why they can't keep clients and why they can't keep staff. Owenby is for the rich and the naive. I gave them an opportunity to do right by me as a client because an attorney friend assured me they had changed. He was not wrong! The fees are greater, the attorneys are less experienced, the staff knows how to bill for work not done, and they know how to avoid ethical and mal-practice complaints. The sole purpose this firm strives for is billable hours - for work they don't even complete. Family law and Criminal law is for those who need it. These attorneys are bread to bI'll, not to care. Billable law is NOT like this across the board. Expensive, yes. Unethical? No. Take it from me. They don't just steal from their clients, they steal from one another. They expect a minimal 10 minute charge for a 1 minute voicemail or an email that could simply be from you saying, "Thank you". Worst experience ever! I paid 3k for a retainer. This law firm literally charged me $175.00-$250.00 per email sent to eat up my retainer. No matter who the email was to.....me, each other, opposing attorney... They changed lawyers 3 times in less than a year. Then charged me for the double work! Nobody there is on the same page. 3k and nothing was even remotely done once the first attorney left. They created 8k of charges. But that doesn't even include discovery, mediation, pretrial, or trial. Emails and initial paperwork ONLY! Very sad! Wouldn't recommend to my worst enemy!
