I didn't like how they directed the traffic for parking this past weekend, but it worked out. There are nice walking trails and a large lake. I saw a playground and lake pavilion. I also saw people fishing. We sent up a tent and chairs to settle in for a long day of track and fiend events. They need more and better speakers/sound system because you cannot hear what they're saying over the speakers unless you're sitting close to the speakers. The bathroom facilities were actually decent. At parks, the bathrooms can be less than what is desired but you can tell these are regularly cleaned. Overall, it's a nice park!

There are lots of restaurants and bars along the lake with docks, which is pretty nice since the only other option is by car and that takes quite a while considering everything is backroads around the lake. There's a small privately owned island in the center, the owners are super friendly as long as you keep the island clean and clean up the mess you make. So don't ruin it for the other party people. Definitely worth checking out if you have the opportunity. Just mind the no wake zones.

The national forest encircles a state park that seems to have some of the best views from high up…read more The federal area includes a number of moderate length trails through the forest. The one I stopped at had a small waterfall for about a two mile roundtrip, with the option to go several miles farther. There wasn't any fee to enter (unlike the state park).

The hotel is still under construction. We had a pull through full hookup site. Packed gravel and dirt site that was partially separated by trees and plants. Joined to Cheaha Falls and Pulpit Rock. Both were absolutely gorgeous views. It was a great weekend getaway!

DO NOT STAY IN THE CABINS!!…read more Last night my wife and I swept the walls and floors of lady beetles flushing them down the toilet, since they are invasive. Around two we got to sleep. A few times we got woke up by a bite of two but most were gone or so we thought. We woke up to find the windows covered with them. We called again to ask for help and they sent down a housekeeper. After talking to a few employees we found out this has been an ongoing problem and that many people have cut their stay short. As I understand from what was said to me the management here is fully aware and wants to ignore the problem hoping it goes away instead of addressing it. This is a bad look for Alabama. If I travelled all the way here to stay in these lovely cabins and paid what we paid only to be swarmed by Asian Lady Beetles I would not recommend this beautiful park to anyone. It's not the bugs that give this a two. It's the attitude and lack of action by the management that got them that. The only reason the got a two is the cabin and park are beautiful.

Several people had used this as a launch point for their boat (boat ramp available). In addition there were some people there to picnic and enjoy the nice day. In addition to that there is swimming, a nature trail as well as fishing. Lot's of parking and some good views of the area if you hike up the hill to the gazebo on the far end of the parking lot area. Also, there are some interesting reads about the historical relevance of this area and the ties it has with General Jackson and Davey Crockett. The facility was about 45 minutes from the FEMA training center in Anniston, Alabama, so being bused back and forth was a bit of a drag. You can expect that on deployments. Anyways, I've sidetracked. The facility here is really cool. It has a large conference center and a beautiful lake with many recreational activities for the whole family. It also has several large housing buildings that are setup like hotels. The rooms are 3 star with some having sleeping quarters for up to 6 people (2 bunk beds and a full size bed) perfect for families with children. The rooms do not have TV'S so they are perfect for wholesome family time. WIFi is also available!

Jamey Furnace is a cool Civil War relic that is still standing. It in itself is neat to look at but…read morethey also have a museum (which I did not get to see), there is a walking trail and playground, along with a civil war memorial. There is a big field where they do civil war re-enactments too. Taking a quick walk around on the paved walking trail, I first went to see the furnace. It's amazing that it is still standing! Up behind it is an old house from the 1800s which they have moved to this site and restored. There are pictures of the family who lived there and some history about it. Behind that was some big shed looking buildings which I was unsure of the reason for. Overall it's a nice place to stop at but i wouldn't make a long trip to see unless you are a civil war aficionado. If I lived closer I would probably use it more often for kids to play, walking/ jogging, or picnics when the weather is nice. Minus a star because the landscape is not perfectly kept. It is pretty well maintained and I'm sure they do the best they can with the funding available. That being said you can tell the creators/ caretakers have a vested interest and care very much about this little park. If you are nearby it is worth taking a stroll through for sure. You might even come across a random person strolling about in civil war regalia while on his cell phone like I did!
