The Writing Center is well worth visiting to learn more about him and see memorabilia from his life. It's staffed by talented people including current writers. They are all passionate and knowledgeable about Conroy's works, offering insight and anecdotes about his life and work. The Center also provides programs for young people, writers, and schools. It's worth a trip to Beaufort to see this.

I expect a bunch of people to start coming here so come learn with me and others and beat the rush. This museum is the story of a small fishing community of local Gullah people. A waterfront block…read moreremains, but the rest of the area is now parks and mansions. The oyster factory here has been nicely refurbished into a set of exhibits that details a very specific but interesting history. The admission is well worth it and in addition to the half-hour documentary they show, I spent close to an hour perusing the small site, simply because it was such a nice day. The place is famously the home of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, which is certainly referenced several times. However, when the video showing locals telling their stories plays, names are not given until the credits at the end, leading me to wonder whether Justice Thomas has a brother or cousin who looks a lot like him. But it is actually him joining the interviews, and he is presented as just one of the folks. The place is presented as a story of hard work and cooperation, with the syncretic local religion being emphasized. It's a dynamic that is difficult to grasp for someone who isn't from the area, but is certainly worth considering. Another salient feature of the site is its embrace of Americana. I'm more used to seeing the flag flying in front of buildings like the White House (or the Supreme Court), so seeing it here in this sleepy tidal marsh populated by the descendants of West Africans is a different experience. But it was certainly well worth a visit, and the other visitors struck up some conversations about what this sort of place means.

Gullah Living is located in the back of the Art Center City Market, on the second floor. The artist, Samantha Claar, is not only a talented artist, but she is passionate about spreading the history and story of the Gullah people, descendants of enslaved Africans who lived in the Low-country regions of Georgia and South Carolina. The bright shop will draw you in with its bold and vivid colors and Sam's welcoming demeanor and passion will make you want to stay and hear her story.

It was wonderful evening of discussion that had filmmakers and men and women were at the march on Selma and active in the Civil Rights movement in the 50s and 60s. They also had the exhibit on the Orangeburg Massacare. It's a great place to learn about South Carolina and African American history.

The Museum of Hilton Head Island is a small, interesting and very family oriented museum. I had the…read moreopportunity to check it out, when I first moved to HHI, as it is at the Visitors Center. Within the museum there are a few exhibits and collections of artifacts that relate to the islands history and culture. There are a few small tours that focus on the traditional lives of the Native Americans on the Sea Islands, in addition these is a Pinckney Island walking tour, which is enjoyable (there is a great butterfly sanctuary) Lastly, a Sea Pinces Plantation Overview, which I skipped as I was exploring prior to the tour taking place and feel I got the main points. There are special events that occur from spring till summer-bird tours, which I have not done, but will return to do so. From there, there are a few agricultural exhibits as well as some wildlife preserve areas, with the information boards, explaining the dwellers, their history and habitats. The cost for most of the tours is $12 for adults and $7 for children, which is a bit steep, but with limited private funding, the money needs to come from somewhere...
