For the love of god don't order eggs!!
I cannot remember paying for such awful food in a long time. My girlfriend ordered the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, not a complicated dish, the eggs were rubbery and tasteless whilst the salmon tasted bad and later made her FEEL ILL. I had eggs benedict, I've had eggs benedict many times before and have rarely been disappointed, I love it. Bubble and squeak instead off muffins is an unusual choice but worth a try right? Wrong. And technically fried mash potato with a few peas in it is not bubble and squeak, is it. In my case, the eggs were tasteless and not 'soft' but simply underdone. I was also left feeling a little ill for some time after. Naturally, neither of us were able to finish even half.
When asked if the food was OK I politely mentioned that I did not consider the bubble and squeak twist to be a success (I could and maybe should have said more) and for the rest of the meal was met a combination of rudeness and ignorance by the waitresses and from Kiwis normally the nicest of people from my experience! Were they so offended because they had lovingly crafted this muck themselves and I had offended THEM?! In their defence, they had the good sense not to ask if I had enjoyed it at the end. And there's nothing more irksome than paying over-the-odds for bad food.
The place it's self is a cavernous throwback to a 90's 'style bar', complete with exposed brickwork, U.S. style dinner seats and, yes, even DJ Shadow on the sound system! Textbook!
I was expecting nothing but bad reviews for this place after my experience but everyone seems to love it, so what happened, did we do something wrong when we went? Although I must confess the coffee was very nice and so could be worth a visit if you're not planning to eat, for me, 1 star is too many. read more
