I was struck by all the guests' comments that they had been made to feel so welcome and the warmth of Jenny and Kevin made the guesthouse feel like a home away from home. Straight from the first e-mail, Jenny struck me as someone for whom nothing would be too much bother to help one of her guests out. No wonder she has been awarded a Brecon Beacons National Park Ambassador Award. She gave us very generous rates for 2 double rooms at single occupancy rates. I was also looking for help and local knowledge with a special occasion I was planning and she put in a lot of effort and communication to help me plan the surprise. Not only that but she was genuinely excited for me when we arrived. The B&B is located about a 10 minute walk north of Abergavenny town centre, which proved an ideal base for exploring the many attractions of the area. The Brecon Bracons have something for everyone ranging from stunning scenery and walks for hikers to food festivals and Michelin starred restaurants for foodies. Gastronomes will have heard of local star eateries and chefs such as the Walnut Tree and Stephen Terry's Hardwick. The rooms are all en-suite and located in a quieter area out of town and they all have a view of local peaks. They have all the amenities one expects from a B&B as well as some little personal touches such as books to read. Breakfast is served in the large dining room downstairs and it's an occasion. Jenny and Kevin are obviously avid cooks and are always coming up with dishes for guests to try. The Welsh breakfast will provide enough energy to tackle any of the local peaks though the range of options range from smoked omelette to seafood quiche. The eggs will have come from the chickens in the back yard. They're in good company as Jenny and Kevin have a veritable zoo of lovely cute animals, ranging from the 2 parrots in the living room to a 3 legged cat! Street parking was always ample though they do also have a guest car park available at the rear of the property. This was a great base for exploring the area and with perfect hosts in Jenny and Kevin, I can see why it's the number one rated B&B in town.

Situated just off a main road and therefore in a very quiet spot very close to the town centre the Guest House in addition to human beings offers accommodation to a veritable menagerie, from exotic parrots, cats, dogs, pigeons, hens (loads of them) and goodness knows what else. They animails are of course kept separate from the guests (well, except for the lovely cat who like to strut around the place like all felines) and are amazingly well looked after. Accommodation is OK but a little more attention details would make it really great. It's tiny things like arranging the cables spaghetti junction hanging off the TV (and ensuring yo get a good signal), more shelving space in the bathroom (perhaps removing a couple of knick-knacks) and so on. But the B&B's forte is in the second B, the breakfast. Wow... with super fresh and absolutely delicious eggs you just want to indulge around a full English (or being in Wales, Welsh) breakfast for ever. In addition to the traditional fare you can have french toasts, pancakes, scrambled eggs and smoked salmon, and more - a veritable feast! So enjoy it!

This Travelodge is a little way outside Cardiff City Centre but I prefer it as it is quieter. There…read moreis quite a small car park which in fact does not even have as many spaces as there are rooms which is a pain as it is not easy to park anywhere else. There is a restaurant next door which is handy if you do not want to go into the town centre to get something to eat. Travelodges tend to be the same all over the country. I like them because they are usually clean, the beds are comfortable and they allow you to stay with a dog. They may not be the most exciting hotels around but they are cheap and cheerful.

Booked this place after looking online ad came across the website. First time I've ever been on a…read moreforest holidays site. On first impressions i was very impressed. We didn't arrive till evening but the reception was open till 8pm so luckily someone was there to give us key. The reception is called the forest retreat which is also a small cafe, and shop. Which supply local produce and the essentials. We never ate in the cafe but the menu looks basic such as pizzas etc but useful if you have no food in your cabin. Also free wifi there. We drove round in the dark to find our cabin, which was quite hard as no lights on site but it was sign posted by numbers. We were on the new site, not realising that it was brand new. Apparently the new cabins have only been there a few months or so. You could still see the newly plants trees around each cabin area. Our cabin wasn't in the forest at all but it was close the forest retreat which only took a minute to walk to. But i would have liked to have been more hidden away. But i could see those cabins hidden more in the forest were the older ones, and ours was defiantly at lot more modern and new. Once the newly planted trees have grown around the new cabins I'm sure this would help solve this issue. The cabin was top standard, wooden floors, brand new furniture, under floor heating, log fire, hot tub on the decking. Modern electrics and fully fitted kitchen, we cooked in all weekend and had all amenities to do this. Kitchen fitted with fridge freezer, oven, microwave, toaster, kettle, dishwasher. Only thing is it doesn't provide dish cloth and washing up liquid but they give you a couple of dish washer tablets. So would advise to bring your own cleaning equip if you want to keep on top of the cleaning on your stay. The pillows were too big and gave you a bad neck so a couple of types of pillows would be better. Also the fans in the bathrooms were rattling all night due to the wind, but these are minor issues. Bath robes and towels are supplied, but no hair dryer. We had the dogs too and they loved it. the decking area is all fenced off so they can't get out which was so helpful. They have loads of walking area in the woodlands behind the site for the dogs which you can let them off. You have to keep them on lead in the site for obvious reasons. The forest retreat they can go inside and pick up a free dog treat. The dogs loved coming back to sit in front the log fire in the cabin. We managed to pick up wifi in the room swell. Unfortunately due to the bad weather it went down the first night. As you get no signal at all in the area until you drive up the road the wifi is a must ! There is onsite actives mainly for children, such as climbing and archery. Along with a childs playground and you can hire bikes for around £15 per day for adult. There is lots of pubs in the area. And symonds yat isn't far at all. The only thing it was out of season for the area as we wanted to go to Go Ape but is closed Nov - Feb. Along with other activity companies we checked out. We stayed 3 nights Fri - Mon in the golden oak cabin. Paid around £450 which is ok if you had another couple but for just us two was quite a lot. So i will defiantly return but next time sharing the cost, and when in season too. Overall had a very lovely stay - thanks forest holidays :)

This will take you on into South Wales. 5 minutes in the opposite direction will take you to the M50 and M5/M6. 1/2 hour north-bound will take you to Hereford/Leominster, while 1/2 hr south-bound will take you to Gloucester/Cheltenham. We were met with a warm reception, and cannot fault the all-round friendly helpfulness of the staff. We found our room to be perfectly adequate, clean and comfortable if not rather small, but have to say that we got the distinct impression that the accommodation side of the business came as a secondary after-thought as most of the focus seemed to be put into the restaurant as the primary consideration. Large parties & weddings seem to take precedence. The food was excellent, well thought out & invitingly presented. I can definately recommend the Sunday Lunch! All in all, this is a reasonably priced, pleasant hotel with eager-to-please owners, and is the perfect base from which to explore the Wye Valley.

Best Kept Secret in Chepstow…read more We googled places to stay in Chepstow for the night, and found this place on Bookong.com. I wasn't impressed by the picture, but decided to book anyway, because the price was great. I was pleasantly surprised to find the place was easy to find (we didn't have a map, and saw it on the road), and to our surprise, we had a spot for parking, the room was clean, comfortable, quiet, and warm. Leanna had fresh water in the pot ready for tea in the morning, cookies waiting for us, and fresh milk and water in the fridge in he room for us. We stayed I the Family Room which had an adjoining room for our children. The rooms were very large, and charmingly decorated. The bath had a modern bathroom, with shower, and everything you need. We opted to not do breakfast in the morning, but when we went to settle our bill, we met a couple of other guests who had their breakfast plates full of eggs, giant sausages, tomatoes, and other goodies. Wish we had opted in after all. The dining room overlooked a beautiful several-acre area, green with a forest in the background. We would highly recommend to others, and this would be our first choice for next time too. Hard to believe for the price. The pictures you find online do nothing for this amazing place.
