The gift shop was happy to see us and sad to see us leave!

I could get used to liking stuff like this...not a cheap wine but definitely a good bang for the buck mid range Champagne.

We opted for the cellar with the beautiful tower. 12 Euros per person gets you a Wonderful, informative tour of the Champagne cave (cellar) plus a view of mini museum dedicated to history of their champagne AND a tasting at the end of the tour. The tour lasted 50 minutes. Our guide showed us the vats where 100,000 L of champagne were stored, how they turn the bottles to remove the sediment and treasures of champagne bottles that were centuries old. Someone in the group asked as we walked by crates of champagne what year and type of champagne the bottles were. She replied that champagne bottles are marked by a special system that only the specialists knew. I love learning about champagne! And the tasting at the end of tour was wonderful! They gave us a sample of the Champagne de Castellane Brut. Amazing! Fresh, bubbly, flavorful. This was much better than the Moet et Chandon we were drinking in NY. I wish we ordered a couple of bottles to ship home.

Writing a review now though I've visited the house in June of last year. The house runs tours once or twice a day for a small group of people with a tasting of 5 or 6 of their champagnes from the most basic Extra Brut to the most exclusive Nicolas Francois Billecart and Elisabeth Salmon. The house grounds are kept in pristine condition and have some the best plots on which the grapes are grown right next to the founder's house. The house from what we were told is still occupied, which is wonderful to see that the owners are still involved in some little way with their ancestor's creation. The cellars are amazing and are a must to visit. And champagne!!... Oh the champagne....

Amazing!!! All I can…read moresay. That's it! Well not quite but that about sums it up. Arranged for a visit and a tasting over the internet. Drove up a few minutes late but ok. One of the owners Phillippe have met us at the door and stated pouring from there most basic every day champagnes to the Grand Crus to the special productions of 4 Nuits, which if I have to classify it is actually Red rather than Rose, but still amazing. The Champagnes unlike other producer Roger Brun indicates the grape breakdown in the champagne so if you are like me and acidity of Chardonnay is actually not a good fit you can select productions with no Chardonnay (like Blanc de Noir) or with less Chardonnay, so you taste more fruity/flowery notes of Pinot Meunier or Pinot Noir. Overall amazing experience just don't forget to eat something before the visit because the tasting will give you a health helping of various champagnes!

We were exploring the village of Ay in Champagne and came upon this place. It was an unexpected and…read moreterrific find! First of all, it's really hard to find tasting rooms that are open to the public with out a reservation. Second, many tastings require you to do a tour. And really you can only do so many tours. The champagne making process is really strict, so there are only so many variations between the different champagne houses, which is primarily the grapes they decide to use, the length of aging and whether oak is used. We were able to get a tasting at Champagne Collet without a reservation and without a tour. As such, my husband was a bit skeptical on how good this champagne would be. Well, it was excellent! From our experience and that of others, the champagne market is dominated by the big houses that export to the four corners of the world. The rest are smaller producers and it could be hit or miss, and Champagne Collet was a hit! They have a cool tasting room with their bottles displayed. There is merchandise, which I love to browse. And we did purchase a fabulous champagne carrier so that we can haul our Champagne Collet purchases home. Valerie, our hostess, explained all of their different champagnes and took great care of us. This was a fabulous experience. Champagne Collet does do tours, and if you want to join them for one, you should call ahead. And with most of the region, you should call to confirm they are open before heading over. Also, learn a couple of phrases in French besides Bonjour and Merci, it helps.
