This was a tough marker to photograph because it sits on a small traffic island bisecting busy Main Street and Chestnut Street. I had to sprint across the street and dodge the returning commuters to grab these photos. This is a two sided marker from the CT Historical Commission in the familiar white lettering on a blue background. The marker has a different inscription on each side. Neither side is in stellar shape, as both exhibit signs of failure in the form of peeling and fading paint.

I did some research and found that this particular statue (named Spirit of the American Doughboy) was so popular that over 100 of them can be found in WW I monuments across the nation. The sculptor was E.M. Viquesney and his awesome statue measures over seven feet tall and sits on a 6 foot high granite pedestal. I love the detail on these old statues -check out the rifle in his left hand, the grenade in his right hand. Check out the detail on the backpack and the canteen and the tree stumps and strands of barbed wire. The simple inscription reads: Erected By The Community Association Of Bethel In Honor Of Her War Veterans 1928

The shape resembles one of the Twin Towers. The glass structure is mounted on a five sided base carved out of Connecticut granite. Connecticut lost 152 residents on 9/11 and all of their names are etched into one of the glass panels. I like a place that looks worn, like it's been through some abuse, you know the type of place where people actually pick up weight lift them and then put them down, not always gently. That's the type of place that the war Memorial is, every time I step in here I see everybody working out and taking their work out seriously. I have been to other gyms in the area but I cannot say the same, sometimes they feel more like a social club then the gym. If you want to serious results, and you want to be around people who are motivated and motivate you, then this is the place to go. The pricing is incredible, it is $19 a month with absolutely no commitment and no annual fees which is by far one of the best in the area. Not only do they have a weightlifting area but they also have a basketball court which is great if you love to play ball, a sauna in the locker rooms tops it off. Overall this is by far my favorite gym in the area because like I said I like a gym that looks rough and tough just like the work out I'm about to give it.I highly recommend this place!

The statue was built for a chain of Ohio restaurants in the 1950s named Uncle Sam's. He was clear-coated in 1992 and today he's looking good, patriotic and colorful. His past homes include the state fairgrounds in Danbury, Connecticut, and Lake George, New York, where he stood in the parking lot of the fairy tale Magic Forest theme park.

While home in CT on a short vacation, I wanted to do some genealogy research that I have not been able to complete due to living across the country. I walked in later in the afternoon yesterday and had just missed their resident researcher. I was asked if I could come back today where I could spend some time going through files. I went back in this morning and was blown away by the amount of information that I found. I already knew that I was eligible to work on membership to the DAR for my family, but Diane, the resident researcher, went above and beyond to find many other details about our family from even farther back than that. Deeds, a family book of genealogy, and pictures were amongst the finds today. I grew up in Danbury, but never really got into the history of the city until over the past few years. I admire what the historical society is doing and that they will take you in with open arms and help you with your research. They survive on donations so make sure that you donate something for the time that they give to preserve the history of the town.

What is in doubt is whether or not her heroic exploits as a female Paul Revere actually took place or not. Legend has it that as a 16-yer old she rode all night on horseback to rally the militia after the British sacked and burned Danbury, CT. The marker near the monument states: On April 26, 1777 this brave sixteen year-old girl rode through the enemy-infested countryside for thirty miles in Putnam County, New York, to warn the local militia that British troops were attacking and plundering Danbury, Connecticut. Unfortunately, modern historians say there is little evidence that her alleged fantastic display of courage and patriotism actually happened at all. So was young Sybil an inspirational example of patriotism, or is her story an example of an embellished urban legend?
