After the shootings at Lexington and Concord killed 49 American patriots, Trumbull refused to continue serving the Crown, and he became the only Colonial Governor to support the revolution. He stated that the British attackers would "disgrace even barbarians," and blistered the English for their "most unprovoked attack upon the lives and the property of his Majesty's subjects." How much balls did that take?? The Town of Trumbull was named in his honor, and this marker summarizes its history. It was a close vote, so close in fact that it ended in a tie, setting the stage for the Governor to cast the deciding vote. The Governor was named Oliver Wolcott, and he voted "aye"'. In gratitude, the fathers of CT's newest town ditched the name Farmingbury and changed it to Wolcott. This is a one-sided marker from the CT Historical Commission in the familiar white lettering on a blue background. It's located indoors -in the front lobby of Wolcott Town Hall at 10 Kenea Avenue. . Observation # 3 - The marker has a beautiful location in front of the impressive New Canaan Town Hall. This is a two-sided marker from the CT Historical Commission, with the familiar white lettering on a blue background. It has the same inscription on both sides. . It's located on a strip of grass in front of Town Hall. The marker dates to 1976 and is generally pretty good shape. The white lettering and blue background are still in good condition, but the blue is starting to fade. The marker's full inscription reads: Inscription. This region was established in 1731 as Canaan Parish, a separate ecclesiastical society of the Congregational Churches of Norwalk and Stamford. Incorporated as a town in 1801, New Canaan encompassed the area of Canaan Parish with additional land annexed on the southern and western boundaries. During the early nineteenth century, New Canaan was one of the important shoe making centers of New England. In the latter half of the nineteenth- century, considerable numbers of summer residents were attracted here. Many of their descendants made the town their home, helping to create the residential community that New Canaan remains. Erected 1976 by Town of New Canaan the New Canaan Historical Society and the Connecticut Historical Commission.

Well you might have if you ever stopped to read the Oxford Historical Marker! This is a two-sided marker from the CT Historical Commission with the familiar white lettering on a blue background. The same inscription appears on both sides. It's located on a strip of grass at the Oxford Town Office. The sign dates to 1978, and although the paint and lettering are in good condition, there is a disgusting whitish green slime on the top of one side of the sign. It might be tree pollen, or some kind of mold, but it looks like something out of 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers'. A few well spent seconds with a garden hose and a bucket of soapy water would sure do wonders, here. Hint, hint, hint. The full inscription reads: Originally part of Derby, Oxford was settled by people pushing inland from Derby, Stratford, and New Haven. Land was acquired in five purchases from the Paugussett and Pootatuck Indians. The first grant of settlement appears in Derby records of 1678. Bounds were set with Mattatuck, now Waterbury, in 1680. In 1741 the "Oxford district" was made a parish but did not become a separate town until 1798. Oxford long remained rural with grist and saw mills, wool growing, and coastal commerce via Derby and New Haven until the embargo of 1807. Many small farm industries flourished into mid-century, when the railroad in the Naugatuck Valley caused sweeping changes. With dwindling population, Oxford turned to poultry and dairy farming, which later declined as new highways provided better access to employment in neighboring towns. The airport, opened in 1969, with adjacent industrial areas, began a new chapter in the economic development of Oxford. Erected 1978 by the Town of Oxford, the Oxford Historical Society, Inc., and the Connecticut Historical Commission.

Such are some of Prospect, CT's historical nuggets as recounted on this two-sided marker from the CT Historical Commission in the familiar white lettering on a blue background. It's located on a town green near the intersection of Center Street and Church Street. Dedicated in 1980, the marker is in pretty good condition, with some very minor evidence of peeling. The full inscription reads: On the boundary where Waterbury and Cheshire met, homes were built as early as 1712. Schools were opened and, in 1778, a separatist church. The Congregational Church, "Columbia Parish," was established in 1797 by Act of the Legislature. The governing body was "Columbia Company." Its work included laying taxes, assuring support for church and school, electing constables, school officials, road surveyors, grave diggers and a tavern keeper. In May, 1827, nearly the same area was incorporated as the Town of Prospect, the town with an extended view, at an elevation of over eight hundred feet. Farming was the chief occupation, aided by industry that varied from mills for grinding grain, apple cultivation, and lumbering to the manufacture of farm tools, matches, buttons and other items of practical and household use. Noted and notorious men from Prospect included Peter Gilkey, counterfeiter; Julius Hotchkiss, who became the first Mayor of Waterbury, a Representative in Congress, and Lieutenant Governor; Benjamin Dutton Beecher, an inventor of harvesting machinery and a screw-propelled steamboat; and also C. L. Mortison, known as "Mort" for his cartoons and as "Lester Green" for his tall stories that made the name of Prospect known widely around the country. Men who lived in the area that was to become Prospect served in colonial wars and in the Revolution. They served as well as Civil War and World War I soldiers are listed on the monument in the center of the Green. World War II, Korean and Vietnam War soldiers are named on the honor roll in the Town Hall. Those who lie in unmarked graves are honored by a stone monument placed in the cemetery. He was quite an under-achiever in life. All he did was sign and help draft the Articles of Association, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution. No one else can claim that on his resume. This is a one-sided marker from the CT Historical Commission in the familiar white lettering on a blue background. It's located a few dozen feet away from the road near the intersection of Route 39 and Gaylordsville Road, across the street from the Sherman School. The marker was dedicated in 1981 and is in very good condition. The full inscription reads: Originally part of New Fairfield, which was purchased from the Indians in 1729, the area then known as the Upper Seven Miles was separately incorporated as the Town of Sherman in 1802. The town was named for Roger Sherman who, as a young man, had a cobbler shop at the north end. He was to become the only statesman to help draft and sign all of the following documents: the Articles of Association, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the United States Constitution. A native of Sherman was Philo Penfield Stewart, missionary to the Choctaw Indians, inventor of the Stewart stove, and in 1833 a founder of Oberlin College in Ohio. The Character of the town as a farming community devoted to dairying, grazing, and tobacco-growing changed after 1926 when, for hydroelectric power, eight hundred acres of Sherman land were flooded in the creation of Lake Candlewood. What is in doubt is whether or not her heroic exploits as a female Paul Revere actually took place or not. Legend has it that as a 16-yer old she rode all night on horseback to rally the militia after the British sacked and burned Danbury, CT. The marker near the monument states: On April 26, 1777 this brave sixteen year-old girl rode through the enemy-infested countryside for thirty miles in Putnam County, New York, to warn the local militia that British troops were attacking and plundering Danbury, Connecticut. Unfortunately, modern historians say there is little evidence that her alleged fantastic display of courage and patriotism actually happened at all. So was young Sybil an inspirational example of patriotism, or is her story an example of an embellished urban legend?
